@cybersavant I noticed in your last post you had Kord listed as having 3/2 attacks with his broadsword. Are you sure?

He is not a specialist and is multi-classed. I can't think of a way he can manage that, unless I'm missing something.

@Lord Foul You are correct. I actually had to pull up his sheet when I was doing the combat round post today, it was on my list to address with @cybersavant. As we're not using the weapon proficiency system, weapon specialization is available to single-class fighters only.

Quote

"Since nobody else seemed bothered I took the liberty of acquiring a few more empty potion vials and decanting out those healing potions into single use doses. There's enough for one each, and I'm happy to hold onto the extra one unless you think someone else is better suited for that." He starts handing out vials to everyone present.

Did everyone make sure they got their doses of healing potions? A couple of people don't seem to be carrying one, although I can't recall when they might have used it

I don't believe anyone else has yet used any of the potions, except Mandons who has now taken both of his. Burp! 😀

So everyone else should still have one each.

@Chaz Hoosier Great question!

If there were something obvious in the room, I'd have included it in the original room description. I can't tell you how many rolls I've made as a player (perception or investigation, depending on the edition) to find something like a document that's in plain sight.

Searching the room could be as simple as a declaration--"I search the room", and if there's something hidden to find, I'd either rule that a simple search would be enough to find it (no roll needed) or, if it's something especially obscure, I'd assign a % chance for success. That % would be modified by the length of time you want to search (typically it's one turn (10 minutes) to search a small room), but even more importantly how descriptive the player was in their post--"I search the room" is fine, but "I search the room, paying special attention to the bookcases to look for a book or a latch that might reveal a secret door" is pretty darn specific, and if there is one, that's almost certainly enough to find it. "We spend an hour turning over every book, opening every drawer, examining every brick in the wall" is another no-brainer, I wouldn't require a roll if there were indeed something hidden.

Anyone can search for traps (with a low % of success), the thief is just especially skilled at it and can find/remove magical traps as well, something that no one else can even attempt. For your average joe searching for traps, I would base a roll requirement (and success % of that roll) on the description used--"I look for traps" is lazy but sufficient, but "I look for traps, probing ahead on the floors and ceiling at the front of the group with my 10' pole" is almost guaranteed to find a pit trap or collapsing ceiling without a roll. Doesn't mean you can do anything about it--unless you get creative trying to trigger it or have a thief along to disarm it.

Hope that makes sense!

@Arbuthnott to answer your (now hidden) question, no. You did not discern anything.

Not to preach the virtues of the OSR to much, but if you haven't read this and you're involved in any old-school RPG or modern iteration of such, you should check this out if you haven't seen it already:

It really nails the spirit of what gaming was like when I was a kid, and what I strive to keep alive at my table. And the older I get, the more I drift towards even simpler rulesets (such as BFRPG).

@Excior There's a bit of hidden text for you in the last post, please let me know if you don't see it. I've had problems with other players seeing hidden text, just want to be sure!

I'm digging a lot White Box FMAG. I'm also leaning quite heavily on that side.

When we were kids we attempted to almost impossible fights/tasks, trying to describe them carefully and with much details as possible because we knew our abilities where not there to help us 😂
