Chapter 1: The Whispering Cairn Part One: A Face in Darkness

Thodin moved north into the middle of the intersection as he warned the others of the animal smell and motioned toward the cobwebs.

Allura moved up next to the dwarf as he conjured the spectral hand and took the torch from Sunny and began burning away some of the webbing, sending dozens of common spiders running from the flames. Burning the first wave of webs one could see a flight of steps that led downward, how far Allura wasn't sure, but the entire stairwell was covered in the thick webs. It would be a slow go and she would have to burn the webs the entire way in front of them if they were going to proceed in that direction. The flickering green light must be coming from the bottom of the stairs.

Alatia moved up directly behind the dwarf and tried to make out if the green light was moving but it was hard to tell with all the webs, perhaps that is what was causing the assumed flicker, was the webs, and maybe the light wasn't flickering at all.

With Sunny's suggestion of lighting up and throwing a rock into the darkened stairwell toward the green light, Allura waved her off, likely the webs would block the rock from going far enough into the stairwell. They would have to move forward and let the torch do its work.

Suddenly movement from the east caught Thodin's attention as a trio of wolves stepped cautiously into the light. Two of the mangy curs look as if they haven’t eaten in days. A third wolf is a little larger than the others and does not look hungry in the least. A straight line of scar tissue bisects its face from forehead to muzzle.

The guttural growls echoed off the walls, the sound waves interfering in beats...each little tick of sound sending Sunny's eyes rolling in opposite directions. "Fluffy..." she whispered enigmatically as her head slowly swiveled to face the dark pack. "...you." Her normal chipper visage scrunched into something more grimacing, her lips spreading open but her teeth clenched and grinding left and right. In her head, the teeth grinding was louder than the snarling wolves. Through her teeth she tried to say "...I told you never to come back! NEVER!" But she was already charging right at them, the fancy wine bottle gripped in both hands.

The bottle smacked the canine right in the snout, shattering into a billion pieces...save one rather large and jagged piece she kept for herself. Changing the grip on the now broken bottle she prepared to stab the mutts over and over again...a wild look in her eyes.

The light turned out to be just light - eery and suspicious but at least not the eyes of some monster. Allera somewhat relaxed and focused on the burning the way in (the work was almost satisfying, she never liked the spiders) when expected animals made their appearance. Strangely, from the side Allera expected the least, which caught her off guard.

Her eyes widened and a harsh whisper joined the chorus of attacking sounds.

Riffraff slowly followed Thodin and watched with delight as the cobwebs burned and spiders fled. 'Scurry away!" he commented with a smile.

But that smile was very quickly wiped off his face as 3 hungry wolves appeared over to the East.

The group were quick to act, and as Sunny moved to attack the beasts hand to hand, Riffraff darted eastwards, flinging a rock at one of the mangy curs before moving South to try to find some cover.

When the others didn't take his heed, Armanda shrunk away into himself. He didn't actually move out of the large room, but instead went metaphorically inside himself to hide. No doubt, the light would bring upon them madness and he'd be left to explain what had happened to the strangers and locals alike.

The sounds of the torch whipping through the air was all he heard as he stood shut eye near the back. So when sound came from another direction, the gnome startled and quickly opened his eyes. Wolves.

Their appearance didn't make much sense to Armando, but he'd been surprised by weirder things before. He scrambled to get his crossbow out from beneath his arm and loaded. The bolts were straight and clean, the quiver was wholly in one piece and looked well constructed, but the crossbow itself was a hodgepodge of pieces. It looked like Armando had made it himself.

His deft fingers worked on the bolt and eventually got it set in place. He raised the weapon to his cheek and aimed for the wolf closest to him.

Alatia let's out a surprised, "By the light", and raises her shield to protect her torso.

Glancing at the rest of the party, and seeing that everyone looks to be able to handle themselves, she then rushes forward along with Sunny. From her days talking to farmers, you had to take the head dog down. She echos this wisdom as she attacks, "Take the alpha down first!"

OOC. Alatia tries to see if she can send a cone of fire (burning hands) on as many of the wolves without harming the Barbarian. If she can only hit one non-alpha, she will instead swing her mace at the nearest of the wolves.

Chapter 1: The Whispering Cairn Part One: A Face in Darkness

Her hands free from the torch, Sunny immediately ran right toward one of the wolves, the empty wine bottle in her hand becoming the weapon of the moment as she shattered it into a million pieces across the canine's snout. The glass cutting deep into its flesh with a large spray of blood as the creature yelped and recoiled from the devastating blow.

A moment later a handaxe came whipping by Sunny's head from behind her as it found the side of the creature, she had just smashed the bottle over, the hand axe broke a couple of ribs as it embedded in the wolf's side as the creature collapsed as blood began to pool beneath it.

Allera shifted across Alatia, her eyes widened as a harsh whisper directed a spike of psychic energy into another of the creatures.

Riffraff darted eastwards, flinging a rock at one of the mangy curs before heading for cover.  The rock sailed too high and missed its mark as it joined the other rocks in the pile behind the wolves.

Armando's deft fingers worked on the bolt and eventually got it set in place. He raised the crossbow to his cheek and aimed for the wolf closest to him. But the makeshift weapon made a loud twang when he fired, and the bolt flung out of the weapon only a few feet before hitting the ground.

With the wolf in front of Sunny down, Alatia sprang after the other one, coming face to face with it as she splayed her hand before her and said a few words of prayer as a thin sheet of flames shot forth from her palms to cover both the remaining creatures. The flames quickly engulfed the creature directly in front of her, killing it almost instantly as its eyes melted away and its flesh burned.  The Alpha a little further back also had caught his fair share of the flames as it was severely burned when the flames stopped, bit of its fur still glowing from it, but somehow the creature still stood.

The Alpha charged at the cleric in an act of revenge, but Alatia easily bated the critically injured creature aside with her shield before pulling her mace and ending the threat.

Looking in the direction of the collapse from where the wolves had come, one could see a pile of timber toward the middle of the collapse that had an opening at top where one could climb through, that must be where the creatures had come from.

"I thought the wolf missed." The concern in Allera's voice was genuine. It looked like the blood on Alatia was the wolf's and she came closer to check, ending up closer to the timber too.

"So, there is something on the other side to the east. Have to admit, I am tempted to check, as we were prevented from going there. But leaving that strange light behind with another dark corner unexplored does not sound wise, though."

After pondering for a few seconds, Allera returned to carefully burning the cobweb.

Sunny continued kicking and stabbing the downed wolves for an uncomfortable few moments. It was finally the smell of roasting cobwebs that brought her back to reality. She glanced around embarrassed, hoping no one noticed, before wiping the blood from her hands.

"...eh...I thought for a moment the pelts might be worth something, but its not worth the effort after all..." she lied.

The shadows of the cairn helped masked the gnome's embarrassment. He stood and stared at the bolt lying on the ground just a few feet away, taunting him for his miscalculation and all too happy that no one seemed to have noticed it. He hoped no one had seen anything he'd done and just assumed him a coward. It was better to be considered a coward than an incompetent nit.

As the echoes of the fight died down and some of the others beckoned back to their tasks, Armando scurried forward and collected his bolt. He inspected it for damage and found nothing. It was quickly shoved back into the quiver, as was the crossbow beneath his arm. Stashed away to be forgotten until next time.

Still without a duty himself, Armando hurried forward in the direction of the dead wolves. Careful not to get too close to Sunny, even in her sober state, he took a glance at the bodies. Her assessment seemed to be mostly right, he agreed with a nod. "Mostly bone and gristle, you bet." He concluded with a dismissive way toward the corpses, ignoring that the one wolf likely had some redeemable meat to be had. It best to agree with them for now, maybe hearty meals were something they had talked about for back at the shop and he'd not been listening. He didn't want to seem desperate, people didn't trust desperate. He wiped the wet from his lips on his dirty sleeve.

"I'sa go check their den, yea?" He asked the blonde woman with anxious enthusiasm.

Alatia stood there stationary for a moment slightly shocked at how fast everything went. Her blooded mace hang in her hand, no longer so shiney, but still emitting a fair amount of light. "Wooh, that worked didn't it! I.." She pauses suddenly thinking how disastrous that could have gone and decides to say something different instead, "Should we have a plan if that happens again?"

Walking past the wolves towards the pile of timber she notices Sunny trying to remove their pelts and says, "A shame. It was a good idea".

Standing near Armando the priestess looks up at the gap at the top of the pile and then at the gnome near her, "What do you think? Safe to climb?" She then raises her mace to try and shine some light beyond, trying to guage how much of a tunnel there is beyond. Turning back to Armando she says, "Why's this wood here you think? A closed mine shaft?"

Riffraff grinned his toothy grin as the company dispatched the three wolves with relative ease. Not bad for a bunch of noobs! he thought as the group celebrated their first victory.

He then turned his attention once more to the possibility of treasure...and traps! "Be a little wary if your gonna climb through there..." he warned "...we still don't know why that ceiling came down, and I'd hate to have to clear up the mess if more falls while you're clambering around!"

He joined Alatia as she investigated the wood, then called out to Thodin "What do you think? Was this deliberately collapsed?"
