Sven chuckles.

"No. I've been legalized after my last run in with the law a time back. Magistrate threatened to hang me up by the scuppers if he saw me again in his brig and I don't think it was a threat!"

Sven looks down about the statue. "Sad to hear about that statue. It was a beauty if I remember correctly. Don't worry miss, I'll set the word out later and make sure he gets it back. If it is anywhere within this port, he'll get it back quick like." He looks at her honestly. "I might have been a thief and a pirate, but even I know where the line is. By the way, he really needs to change it's hiding location as it wasn't to well hidden. It's been a few years, but if you see him before leaving port, tell him to quit trying to hide it in the chest under the cot. Everyone looks there. That and behind the picture. Let him know that there are a couple of loose boards under his desk, don't hide it there, but in the spot 3 boards over. It'll mess them up."

Seeing her eyes, he gives a grin. "What? Ships don't change that often and captains of said ships change their habits even less. Also, it was seven lashes and the alcohol used was taken from my gear. Seven was his lucky number and my unlucky one!"

The Stage-Sven

Erika smiled softly. “I am glad to hear that you are following the straight and narrow.” She shifted her pack on her back to put it in a more comfortable position. “A thief is a dangerous thing to have aboard a ship. Horrible for morale.” She kept her face neutral as she stressed the last part. “Nothing tears apart a crew like their possessions going missing to sticky fingers.”

“Seems that you didn’t learn all of his hiding spots.” Erika said with a laugh. Her time aboard the boat had clued her into a few additional spots that the small thief had missed. A wind singer was always considered an officer on a ship, and after years she liked to think she earned the Captain’s trust enough to get a glowing recommendation. And that level of trust was why she didn’t mention the trick bottom drawer of his desk, the ceiling panel that swung up or the cubby hidden behind the map rack.

“True, and Ha’shim is a creature of habit.” Erika agreed as she rested her back against the stage with a small smile. “And sailors are a superstitious lot. Last thing you would want to do is risk ill fortune or a badly timed storm by failing to see a criminal brought to justice.”

Lastanor Nightwater

SahuaginDDtransparent.png.25eb0739bea280163e7e1e369828781c.pngLastanor had returned to contemplating his books and charts, having sated his desire for conversation for the time being.
Only half-paying-attention to the sounds around him, his fins nonetheless twitched as he overheard mention of thieves and ships, and he stopped to pull another book out of his satchel...this one visibly brimming with magic.

Pushing the magical tome's cover aside, he flipped through the pages, mouthing silent words to himself until coming to a specific page filled with, to anyone not a wizard, indecipherable arcane scribblings, and staring at it thoughtfully for a while.

If anyone could read his thoughts at that moment, they would be something along the lines of, I thought this 'treasure scent' spell needed further experimentation before it would be effective on the ocean, but it seems as though it would be perfect for finding things hidden under the floorboards.
Straightening up and crossing his arms, the cloaked sahuagin continued to muse, If lady Zentaru agrees to host me, I might speak to her about arranging an arcane lock for her quarters.

Thorvald Hrolfson: Stormlord of Procan

Leaving the interview, Thorvald was confused. He simply could not tell if he'd gotten the job or not. To be honest, he was a little pensive. Shaking his head, entered the hall again. He saw several new people and some he recognized as well. Putting on his jovial face again, he boomed out to the group, "Blackwater Hells! It's a convention of the Sea!" Smiling to one and all, he worked his way to someone he recognized.

"Hey boys, did I miss much? I swear I wasn't in there more'n a few minutes, but it's got busy real quick."

"Well, if it isn't the lass that I've been wanting to see for at least the last few minutes!" He picked her up and spun her around. "How was your talk? I could be truly honest if I said that I have no idea how mine went." He laughed. My dear, she might not appreciate that. Stepping back, Thorvald smiled like he was in trouble.

OOC: I don't remember which of us went in first. But I figured time was running short and I wanted to say hi to everyone.

Trask

spacer.pngTrask looked up at the big tattooed warrior as he surveyed the crowd but it was so noisy in the inn that he wondered if he had even been heard. A moment later the seaman's face lit up in a bright smile as he seemed to spot someone he knew from across the bar. The man was so dour it was surprising, in a nice way, that his face could even make such a joyous expression. He set off towards his friend without even a glance at Trask, confirming to the young lizardman that he hadn't been ignored, just unnoticed. Still wanting to hear the tale of the man's tattoos, Trask set off in pursuit.

The crowd seemed to part for the big man much more easily than for Trask's smaller form and by the time he was able to catch up the tattooed seaman was speaking to a horned woman and a blond sailor who, like everyone else around here except for Lastanor, Trask didn't know. Fortunately he was just close enough as they greeted each other to hear the names Manny, Althea and Dorian mentioned. He hesitated to just wander up to a group he didn't know but the confident Dorian hadn't seemed to struggle so he gathered his courage. After all, the only way to make new friends was to say hello.

"Hello! Do you mind if I join you?" He asked the group as he approached. "I hope I'm not interrupting. My name is Trask. I saw your tattoos earlier and they're so intricate I wanted to ask about them. Do they tell a story?" He asked Manny curiously.

He heard Dorian mention a fish and looked over to see Lastanor engrossed in his notes. Pleased to have something to contribute he explained. "That's Lastanor, he's a deep sea diver looking for ancient ruins and buried treasure. He seems nice." A thought occurred to the lizardman at that point. These three had likely been out at sea much longer than him. "Have you ever found any buried treasure in your travels?"

OOC

@8w_gremlin I probably should have tagged you when I approached earlier 😅 When the characters don't know each other's names you can't really include them in the post until you've been introduced!

@Lord Foul@rorytheromulan I don't mean to intrude, but having tried unsuccessfully to strike up a conversation with Manny I figured following him would be the thing to do.

Manny

Harpooner.png.c8711a8d655ae1c088aa6f0213263230.png
"A calm sea does not make a skilled sailor, nor does an easy fight make a true warrior."

Manny turned to Trask, his initial surprise at being approached by the young lizardman quickly replaced by a softening in his eyes—a reflection of the open seas that shaped him. Something earnest and genuinely curious about Trask reminded Manny of his early days, filled with questions and a thirst for knowledge about the vast world beyond the familiar shores.

"Of course, you're welcome to join us," Manny responded, his voice carrying the warmth of a gentle wave. He gestured to an open space beside him, inviting Trask into their circle. It was a simple gesture, yet one that bridged the gap between stranger and acquaintance.

"As for these tattoos," Manny continued, rolling up a sleeve to give Trask a better look, "each one indeed tells a part of my story. The sea, my battles, the lessons learned, and the people met along the way. This one," he pointed to a particularly intricate design that seemed to dance with the motion of his muscles, "represents the journey, not just the destinations or the conflicts. It's about the continuous learning and growing, the ebb and flow of life's tides."

His explanation was devoid of any bravado; instead, it was imbued with a sense of humility and a recognition of the shared humanity that binds us all, regardless of our origins or species. In sharing his story, Manny hoped not just to satisfy Trask's curiosity but to kindle in him the same sense of wonder and exploration that the sea had awakened in himself.

" I am Manaia Whakatere, of the Tohorā Wairua; but you, you can call me Manny" he smiles and calls the serving man for another ale, for his new acquaintance, again you here the 'wh' of his name seemingly being pronounced 'F'. "And you, do you have any tattoos? How do you mark your history"

OOC, Mechanics

Sorry @Barrigan I must have missed that, apologies.

"Mhm. Mhm." I nod and listen to Quotara, focusing rather intently on her so as not to miss a word.

"Wait! Are you saying the bulk of the ironwood boards are interlocked vertically, not horizontally? Doesn't that require a more stressful bending of the wood?" I squint in concentration. "Well, I suppose if they are ironwood, they can handle the additional tension. Still, it would mean more cracks!" I point a finger toward her, with a grin. "More chances of a leak. Especially in combat."

Zette turns back into her normal self to answer the cat. "Green. Definitely green, but brighter. Like this -" she reverts to a ball, brightens her white light, and returns to her normal form - "but green."

Ħraan Evermeer

(Thorvald)

Letting out a startled laugh, Ħraan lets Thorvald pick her up without protest, effectively ragdolling as she spins through the air. "You're a daft bugger, but don't be doing that when I don't know you're there, alright?"

"She's an interesting woman. Hard to read, but those long-lived types usually are. I'm happy with it, though, even if I get passed over to Garth instead." She spares the Hadozee a glance before smiling up at Thorvald with obvious excitement. "Did you know about this privateer business? I knew the captain was recruiting for something, but she just explained the whole gig to me; it sounds perfect, don't it?"

Dorian Hawkwind

(Trask, Manny & Althea)

"Ancient ruins and buried treasure? Now that does sound like quite the adventure! 😀 In truth I'd not have guessed the fish-man to be such a... studious type," he says indicating Lastanor at his table of books. "But I forget my manners. I am Dorian... Dorian Hawkwind, and this is Althea, chosen by her god and destined for great adventures! And you, sir, Trask, did you say, what manner of person are you? I confess I've never seen such a diverse gathering of races and species before. It's all quite fascinating!" 😊

"Well, young lady. I doubt I could sneak up on you if I tried." He leaned in close and whispered conspiratorially, "You might not notice, but I'm kind of big to be sneaking around." Smiling he leaned back and looked around him. "The guest list seems to have grown in the few minutes I was gone. It feels like things are wrapping up soon. I wonder how the crew will end up. Do you have any guesses?"

Dear, speculating won't give any answers. I know, but it's starting to worry me, love.

To her question, he said, "I've been a privateer before." He smiles, "I am eager to give it another run."

(Trask, Manny, Dorian)

"I'm just relieved to have seen a familiar face away from home. So my hope is that Manny and I are posted together. I thought I was going to be the only outsider around here." Althea looks down at her body for a second. "I think I have everyone beat in number of feet, though."

Ħraan Evermeer

(Thorvald)

"I hadn't noticed," Ħraan rolls her eyes, but looks genuinely amused by Thorvald's antics.

"I wouldn't like to guess, at least not out loud; if someone gets picked that I discount, they'll know I thought that of them," she gestures towards the group of applicants sitting near by. "I doubt you have much to worry about; big man like you, the captain'd be lucky to have you on board, provided the ship still floats!"

Her expression shifts into something complicated when Thorvald talks about privateering. "There's a lot of history up there then, eh? Your old captain have ties to any governance like this lot? By the sounds of it, Anderon has more than a few privateers out on the blue."

Grinning Quotara answers back. "Ah, that would be true but with such a high profile vessel they have a specialist of repair magic. And even with the double marines the savings in armor weight means she is rather fast so can close a distance instead of exchanging bolts." Under the table her tail flicks, flexing some after being still. Her next line comes off cold as if reading from a script for the first time. "Rumor has it they are thinking of doing a double hull for the next one, a main hull for buoyancy and then a shell of the ironwood plates." With a sigh she takes a heavy pull of her drink, her tone returning to a more normal level. "More defensive thinking... while it might save a lot of lives, those lives might not be at risk if we were to threaten back..."

Adalmar (upstairs)

"Indeed, good sir, I caught your introduction, and your name rings a bell. Did you work for Captain Sunny Sarah some years back? I did some weatherwork for her on a round-trip, after you had moved on, and heard quite the tales about you, if you are indeed that person.

I'm Adalmar, by the way, a shaman."

"That would be correct," Vae responded, now considering the dog in front of him with some curiosity. "And we certainly could have used a weather worker on that voyage."

"A shaman you said? I've not had the pleasure of meeting one before. If you'll excuse me, is your current form your natural one? It seems remarkably similar to a blink-dog, but I've not heard of blink dog shamans before."

========

OOC: interesting point about what might considered 'gauche' with regards asking about a person's choice of form type. I guess it's common enough that it can be discussed openly without fear of embarrassment.

The Stage - Erika

Sven.png.a51d218807e0799d6405f6f3d17a2604.png

Sven laughs at that. "I never said I went straight! I just went legal! A thief is a dangerous thing aboard a ship, unless you are aboard a ship of thieves! That is what pirates are ya know. Seafarin' brigands, thieves and ne'er do wells. Scags and scallywags are some of the nicer things we've been called. Privateer is when you go legal. They figure what better to fight pirates than other pirates."

Sven laughed again at her 'hiding spots'. He didn't have the heart to tell her that he'd uncover all of them when sailing with him years ago.

Changing up the tone. "So, what brings a justice minded person like you to want to join a crew of vengeance minded scallywags and pirates? You seem too nice for this sort of thing."
