The whole lizardfolk vs human burial site confuse Snow, why would the lizardfolk have a burial ground right outside a human village?  "burn the evil trees?" -kill it with fire- is a pretty common follow-up to the witchcraft comment.

She take position to Torren's side.

A hissing voice is heard. It appears to be coming from somewhere atop the wall, in amongst all that tangled impassable foliage.

One could hide an army in there.

It is the voice of a female lizardfolk of the venerable sort, which given how lizardfolk society is composed, doubtless means she also comes with the adjective 'revered'.

"State the password.", she says flatly.

Torren looks up at the wrinkly old lizard, "With respect, we don't have one, though I'd be glad to negotiate one with you. We come with a tortured soul in need of interment. Are there humans buried in this sacred place? This man needs to be with his family." He wasn't sure what he was looking at or how severe the threat was, but it was better to lead with good manners than endanger them with flippancy.

Father de' Fatale smiles when the newcomer, Snow White, suggests that the trees atop the mound are evil and possibly should be destroyed with fire whispering, "It's likely that the trees are neither good nor evil, but serve as guardians to keep interlopers away from the mound."

Continuing in the same lowered voice, Raziel adds, "Which, if correct, is likely a good thing since that would keep the undead away from accessing the ancient dead in the burial crypt. As such, I still recommend caution and keeping our distance while we look for the villager's burial grounds or recent activity on the mound."

No sooner has the padre spoken than a hissing voice calls out from the swaying trees asking for a password, which causes the Priest of Erastil to momentarily freeze before regaining his composure and quietly moving fifteen feet further away and whispering, "No idea."

As the group tries to negotiate with what is most likely an automated magical protection for the burial site, the holy man keeps his eyes and ears focused on the immediate surroundings watching and listening for the sight or sound of movement or anything unusual.

Ed chews on a long piece of grass, a short distance away from the rest of the party; a spot he deemed to give him a good vantage.

He was plainly out of his depth in this whole affair. Undead monsters and moving trees were not his specialty.

He glanced at Bugler as the group set to negotiating with the mystical voice and his hound seemed to be sharing his same feelings.

The various explanations and entreaties result in a dry hissing laughter from somewhere in that morass of vegetation. Still, she sounds amused.. "We don't have one... so you do know the password after all.".. if a little bonkers.

No sooner is this said, then an old, very old, serpentfolk comes into view, walking down the thin raised path that connects the back of the mound to the dyke behind. She is wearing leather rainment so worn it likely feels like silk, comfy slippers that look to ten layers of leather thick and a dazzling assortment of bones, trinkets, beads and fetishes. She regards you all with beady serpent eyes.

"I am Speaks with Humans.. an ambassador."

After the odd introduction Snow look back at the village, based on what she has seen and heard from the other survivors* the inhabitants have been exterminated, zombified and eaten some time ago, maybe weeks, this isnt even the first time such thing happen, with new people coming to colonize the place only to meet the same grim fate.

She rest the axe on her shoulder, holding it with one hand while looking at the old snake "if you are an ambassador, who's the lord of this land?" even with her limited education she know ambassadors are sent by kings, to talk with other kings, Snow wish to know who own the village.

When the failure to reply with a password is correct and brings forth a very old serpentfolk wearing a well-worn leather rainments, thick leather slippers and a plethora of bones, trinkets, beads and fetishes who identifies herself as an ambassador who has come to speak with us, Father de' Fatale slightly relaxes and slowly returns to the back ranks of the larger group.

Listening to 'Speaks with Humans,' the holy man keeps his ranged weapon in hand but clearly pointed down at the ground as he listens to the newcomer and members of the party speak with each other.

However, when there is an appropriate pause, the holy man will introduce himself saying, "Greetings, I am Father Raziel de' Fatale, Priest of Erastil."

Favoring the truth, the minister explains why they are here, "We do not intend any trespass and mean no harm. We did not even realize that the mound was occupied."

"We look for the burial grounds of the humans from the nearby village so we can bury folks who were killed in that sacred ground," Raziel adds with a friendly sincere smile.

"It is our hope and prayer that the dead will find peace and rest and not walk these lands as undead," the cleric honestly reveals and then waits for the ambassador to reply.

Speaks with Humans, somewhat bent over, regards Snow with beady eyes.. "Ah, so you're the dumb one. There's always one... at least one.", she replies sibilantly, somehow managing something akin to a drawl.. that must've taken a lot of practice. She then turns her gaze to Raziel. "Well, you're not dumb.. you speak as you should... without casting doubt on the status of the newly met.. in debated lands.. as a clueless newcomer."

"This mound is the burial ground you seek. It had to be guarded.. and so it is." As if arranged for in advance, the trees rustle and shake, the wood creaking and moaning.

She then looks in the direction of the carried corpse.. "The Smith? I rather liked him.. not dumb."

Raziel gets the impression that Speaks with Humans is on the level perhaps overly mischevious.

Torren listens to the old bird as she gives her spiel. Perhaps being the 'human talker' leaves her as an outcast and spends much time navel gazing (do lizards have navels?) or she's outcast for some other reason. Either way she's spent a loooong time in this grove. "So, what do you want us to do? Can we enter to bury this man?" She seems amiable enough so he adds, "Also, do you think we can have commerce with your people? I hope you and they have a decent view of us."

Speaks with Humans directs her gaze to Torren, she turns and walks over to one of the many 40' high trees, whereupon she strokes the bark and whispers to it. The roots of the tree seem to writhe, revealing a cavity under the tree. She turns back to gaze at Raziel, appears to lose the plot for a moment as she dithers. "You.. Raziel! Drag the Smith up here, perform such rites as are fitting, for time is short."

She then turns her gaze back Torren.. "You humans ever you seek to push us from our lands. So, you get the view you deserve.", she remarks a little acidly.

"No commerce with my people, just with me."

Yes, shes dumb, she know it, Alorsin reminded her daily, with creative variations, some of which she did not understand, somehow managing to irritate the elf.

Snow cant chose to be smart, she is what she is, some people are tall, other are short, some are beautiful, other ugly, nobody get to chose and only the rich can buy the magic to change that.

But the barbarian can chose how to act, a decision she has made a long time ago, she wont fall to provocations, she's not so weak to be hurt by words.

Maintaining her position she watch the priest, waiting for him to do his rituals.

When the ancient one causes a cavity to open under one of the trees on the mound and invites Raziel to intern the body and conduct his funerary rites, Father de' Fatale slightly bows and sincerely says, "Thank you."

Without hesitation, the holy man turns his back on the stranger and carefully retrieves the corpse of the deceased Smith which he carries up on to the top of the mound and lightly deposits the remains in the cavity under the unusual tree.

Thereafter, the Priest of Erastil kneels in memorial to the dead and utters a few ancient funerary orations, which are followed by several silent prayers designed to bring rest to the deceased and end his haunting of the Smithy. Next, the priest arises and withdraws simply saying, "It is done!"
