Torren chuckles, "Hah, I like her." With all races people get to an age where they are empowered to say whatever they want, consequences be damned. To him, such people are to be highly valued. Venerable and Cantankerous should be synonyms.

As the body is interred the inverted silently screaming ghost disappears from in front of the Smithy, indeed something like a sigh of release is faintly audible. Speaks with Humans looks up at the sky at this. "This is good.", she says.

Bringing her gaze back to the folk before her, she takes a deep breath.

"The people who came before, the Befores...", she gestures towards the cabins and incomplete wall, ".. sought to move through our lands. We tossed them back out as was necessary. The stories of our people tell, over and over again, the same tale. Humans come, make friends with The People, then their many sons and many daughter forget the oaths taken and by dint of their greater numbers take our lands by force. We not make the same mistake for the hundredth time."

"When the Sahaugin came, we were massed on the opposite border of our lands.. for we are surrounded on all sides by enemies. Where we drawn there? I suspect so. A small contingent of what in your language would be called a border guard were behind where I stand now, too small in number to venture out, needed here to keep the Sahaugin at bay. So, the Befores, they fought hard but were overmatched, the Before females and young ran to our wall, but the one brave who tossed down a rope was struck down with magic. So, the Before females and young all died were you stand now."

"The Sahaugin took their time, but could not take the bodies below the wall, were killed when they tried."

"So, we built the mound, consecrated it, interred the dead and set guardians upon their resting place. The Smith there was as the man wounded and left crying for help. So that's the story.."

She presses one clawed hand into her back, stretches painfully. "I am old, the task has come to me to stand between The People and humans.. to keep them at arms reach. I am old and wise enough not to be taken in by your folks talk of progress, of the new, of grand horizons as the young would. I am The Wall. It saddens me that your ancestors so fouled the water and that these folk paid the price for that bad faith, but there it is."

She makes a gesture, which doubtless means something to her people.. it has the look of someone warding away evil spirits, evil humors..

"So, do you fast breeding lot have metal tools and weapons to trade? If you have other things we can convey them to Talks with Bastards, my contemporary on our Eastern border."

Torren shrugs. It's a story he could believe. He had seen quite a lot of the same thing as a mercenary. Still, how long have humans been washing up here and inevitably dying? "I don't think we have trade yet. We're still getting our bearings. We have heard that this is an island." He doesn't mention who they heard it from. "Is there a better place we can relocate to? It would be... unfortunate to repeat the path of The Befores."

Theo had been content to hang back and observe, and likewise refrained from interrupting during the negotiations with Speaks with Humans. He knew that he was often described as 'abrasive, at best', and didn't feel like inviting criticism from the elderly lizardfolk. Still though, he listened in on the conversation, perking up slightly when she mentioned wanting metal goods in response to Heva's question. Though materials were ever an issue, once he got some, he could add a way of producing metal to the list of things he'd need to make.
Clearing his throat slightly, the elf quietly commented to Torren.
"If we can source the raw materials necessary for me to make wondrous items with, I should be able to generate some iron ingots for Kale to make use of."
Pulling back out of the conversation, Theodmer maintained his customary bland smile. Any real discussions on what to actually trade to the lizardfolk would have to wait for a more private setting, so he instead continued listening, waiting to hear what Speaks with Humans would have to say about potential relocation possibilities.

Feeling an internal sense of relief when the burial of the Smith is effective to quell the restless spirit haunting the Smithy in town as the man's remains are laid to rest, Father de' Fatale quietly listens to the story of the past being told by the elder representative of the snake people.

It was a common tale experienced by the longer-lived races when dealing with humans, since in one generation of Elves, numerous generations of humans have come and gone over the decades that can lead to misunderstandings between the various groups which allowed Raziel to understand the position of the snake people with respect to newcomers, especially humans.

While the others discuss trade, the Priest of Erastil establishes a security perimeter as Raziel stands with his loaded light crossbow at the ready, but pointed at the ground, while keeping his eyes and ears focused on the immediate surroundings watching and listening for the sight or sound of movement or anything unusual in the area.

"but we arent just humans: there are elves, angelfolks, beastfolks, even some goblins, do your people hate them too?" shes trying to understand if the lizardfolks dislike humans due to the past conflict, or if they dislike everyone that isnt a lizardfolk, she cant do anything if it's the latter but if their hostility is specifically aimed at humans then someone like Theodmer who must be really, really old, might earn their sympathy

Heva started to feel sick to her stomach as the discussion of children breaking the oaths of their parent and grandparents. By the nine hells, she wasn't even ready to have children. "We don't want to be here. Our ships were wrecked, and the survivors were washed ashore. " Heva states.

"Is there anyone nearby that has a large ship or can make a large ship? That's what we all want. We want to trade for a ship. Then we will sail away, and you will never see us again.

Talks shakes her head, looks at Torren, while gesturing towards Snow.. "You are not wise to let that one speak in parleys." She pauses to chew on some smoked meat, honeyed. "She will talk you into fights you don't need. She says we hate humans, putting words in my mouth. She also fails to realize the obvious, that a human civilisation need not be composed only of humans to behave as humans do. These are the words of the obtuse and a foolish trading partner courts disaster. Putting words into another's mouth suggests you are, how do you people say it?, not on the level."

She next turns her gaze towards Heva.. "You might want to sit down for this.. hold onto something, have a stiff drink ready... if you send a familiar high enough, your familiar will see that this place is indeed an island. Send it higher still and your familiar will see that clouds fully encircle this island at a distance. These clouds spin around us, never approaching, never receding. They are the reason there is no wind and the skies are always clear. The water in this place rises from the trees.. nothing comes from the sea."

"So humans..can you answer the riddle of where you are?"

Having finished speaking for the moment, Speaks with Humans cocks her head to one side and directly regards Theo, gifting him with what can only be described as a long measuring stare.

Torren's stomach sinks. That yawning chasm in his spirit widens and threatens to suck him in. Stories flood back to him, years of idle time spent over history books and storied accounts. "Crap. Crap! God cursed abomination of the Hells blighted crap! Of all the... We're never going to leave are we?" He turns to the others, "It's the storm! The Eternal Storm of Abendego! By the gods, no one has ever returned from it. The largest ships have tried and been forever lost. People traveling by magic don't even come back. I had hoped all we needed to do was survive long enough for rescue. There is no rescue. No one sails these seas and if they did it's a one way trip." He paces back and forth releasing the energy pent up from a very bad day. He is not good. He felt nauseous but there was nothing in his stomach. He wants to punch something but there is nothing here worth his wrath.

When Torren reveals the party's true location as the Eye of the Eternal Storm of Abendego, Father de' Fatale's heart sinks when the padre realizes that there is not going to be an easy escape from these foul lands, nor is a rescue mission to save them ever going to arrive.

Well, that certainly changes everything, the Raziel thinks to himself as suddenly the prior suggestions to secure and fortify the village, to rally the people, to marshal assets and to trade with the snakepeople became extremely important by geographic necessity.

Smiling at One Who Speaks with Humans, the cleric says in a sincere voice, "Thank you for your help and the information. We look forward to establishing trade with you in the near future since it seems that leaving is not going to be a viable option at the present."

Snow, again, doesnt react to the provocation, she's getting the feel Speak with Humans is testing her, after all the lizardfolk does answer to her questions, in her strange way, whatever the reason she will maintain composure.

She look at the other survivors, to see if they agree with the lizardfolk, if they will ban her from this conversation.

After several seconds of silence she ask another question "you say i'll talk us into fights, against who? you said we cant commerce with your people, just you, that you are the Wall, will other members of your people visit us? are there other tribes on this island, beside your people?" to put it simply, she cant talk the party into fights if no one talk with the party, unless Speak with human refer to herself.

When Snow and the ambassador of the snakepeople continue a light verbal banter that is not necessarily intended to be offensive but that certainly is not helpful, Father de' Fatale attempts to slightly smooth the matter over diplomatically explaining in a soft friendly tone with a sincere smile, "Since we were just shipwrecked here today, none of us know each other."

"However, in my heart I honestly believe that Snow is trying to learn and not offend. We all are different races, all hailing from different places and even planes, and all of us have different experiences and upbringings. Because of these differences, I believe she just speaks like her people and that is just different than us," Raziel politely suggests.

Looking the venerable snakelady in the eyes, the holy man says honestly, "As fellow diplomats, I know you will agree that we must choose our words wisely, but as diplomats we must also remember to soften the speech of others who are not like us before their words reach our ears as well. In fact, I suggest that this is merely one of those misunderstandings which can be easily corrected."

"So, in the interest of good relations this day and the future sunrises forward, I want to confirm the friendship of our group and, before any offense is taken, offer our mutual respect and apologies before we inadvertently get off on the wrong foot. Especially with so 'much' at stake," Raziel adds while looking momentarily at Snow.

"So, unless I'm wrong, I honestly believe that Snow will confirm that she means no harm or insult to anyone at all and hopefully we can put this variation in communication 'style' behind us and focus on building a good relationship between our groups."

"And, as you implied, a slow steady approach is the key to building a future friendship and working relationship for both our peoples," the Priest of Erastil concludes hoping his words immediately calm everyone's emotions without further banter on that particular subject.

In an attempt to change the subject, the minister asks, "Now madame, can you please tell us about the Saghian? Do they trade or just plunder? Why did they attack the village? Do the Saghian have a prior claim on the village lands? Did the villagers do anything to provoke the Saghian," Father de' Fatale asks in the hope of avoiding more unnecessary conflict?

Pausing for a moment at the rant from Torren, Theo frowned in contemplation.
"Let's perhaps not tell the others about where we are, just yet. People tend to get a bit destructive if they think there's no hope."
Turning his attention back to Speaks with Humans in time to catch her measured stare, the elf's expression turned from bland business smile to a more polite greeting as he wracked his brain for knowledge of lizardfolk customs. Bowing slightly, the elf did his best to offer a proper greeting to a lizardfolk ambassador, hoping that time in the Eye hadn't changed their customs too much, and waited for a break in the conversation to introduce himself.
"I am Theodmer. Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. We have many, as I'm sure you've noticed."
With that, the arcanist fell silent again, given Speaks with Humans time to respond, not just to him, but all the other inquiries that were being directed at her.
