Terran Posted March 17 Clone Share Posted March 17 (edited) We can probably get by the water creature if we can get a net. Weight the edges down. I suppose a grid of sticks tied together like a large net might work, but would not be as flexible so it clings around the foe like a true net. Then it should pin the critter below the waterline and prevent if from spitting on Rodin!!! Not only is he knocked out again, once again his bow has been left behind as he is rescued. So now all he has, assuming he recovers, is a frickin' dagger. So now he is a bow specialist with no bow and no real melee weapon. Sorry, but this guy has not been fun to play as nothing has worked for him aside from some good skill checks. To make matters worse, we have collected no loot with which to go back to town and resupply with and his lost weapons are the more expensive weapons. Yes, he has the skill to make a new bow, but sadly does not even have the money to cover that reduced amount. This is the point that if I was playing a video or computer game I would just start over. I truly am not sure how this guy and progress forward at this point. For one, I'm willing to assume that someone picked up the bow this last time. True, it wasn't explicitly stated, but we also fast forwarded this exit and it wasn't under the same threat as the previous one, or the same circumstances. I suspect if this were a TTRGP, it would have been picked up. Second, this will seem very deus ex machina under the circumstances of this OOC discussion, but there is actually a development in play that might slightly alleviate this particular situation. Was planning on this development previously, but will forgive everyone for an eye roll when it occurs now, lol Sorry, been swamped, trying to get to my games and making it a priority this week. I'd rule that up to one person can Aid Another on a Craft (Bowmaking) Check without ranks in the skill. Craft is not a Trained Only skill and does not have outcomes restricted to classes with certain abilities, so I see no reason characters can't help each other in crafting, but "realistically", I don't think having more than one person help you craft a bow would actually be beneficial unless they also knew how to craft bows... Terran Posted March 18 Clone Share Posted March 18 (edited) Quote deus ex machina Steve Martin, "He spoke France!" Quote I'm willing to assume that someone picked up the bow this last time. Chaz Hoosier Posted March 21 Clone Share Posted March 21 To be honest, I don't think the only issue with the water creature is unlucky rolls. If it is what I think it is, it's sitting in ideal conditions to be pretty unkillable at level 1. A net like Terran proposes might get us a round, but the thing does have an acid attack and could just dissolve it like it did the sunrod. I am wonder if any of you have any feelings about my plan of luring the ants into a battle with the kobolds with food scented rocks. @Terran@Draidden@rauhric@Calrond@JagrHunter Name xDiceName xDiceResult xDiceString xDiceRolls
rauhric Posted March 21 Clone Share Posted March 21 (edited) The giants ants are going to be real trouble. If we engage them it's going to be a fight, no matter the plan to lure them to fight the kobolds. I am not sure what type of lure we could use. Honey? We would need a barrel. I am wondering if we continue the excavation of the ruins would that cause havoc for the creatures below. There are already pot holes to work with what if we just continue the process. Kobolds live underground for a reason, so what if we take away that protection and expose them to the elements. If they like the safety of the dark let's take that away. It is not ideal for adventurers to become construction/demolition workers but the frontal approach has not worked. We need to come at this problem from the side. What would we never do in a game? I still think going back to town is ideal. Pick up new supplies and come back armed better. More supplies, more shields, more knowledge... It could not hurt us more than what we have been doing now. Terran Posted March 21 Clone Share Posted March 21 (edited) I doubt its acid is so caustic that it could dissolve sticks lashed together while the acid is diluted from being under moving water, but agreed it won't last long. It might simply tear the stick trap/net apart with sheer strength alone. We don't really know much about it other than keeping it spitting acid under water is much better than allowing it to spit above the water! _________________________________________________________________________ Pitting one group against another is a desirable goal! 😀 Another option is to use hit and run tactics on the ants. Used ranged attacks and even traps. Withdraw when needed. Press attack when we can. We can heal quickly, they can't. They also can't replace their numbers quickly, so if we can get a kill and run, come back and get another kill, each time it will get easier to dispatch the group. _________________________________________________________________________ One thing is clear, we need to try to use ranged attacks, cover and concealment, and pre-planned battle strategies and avoid close combat until it's the most opportune time to press the attack. Especially since when anyone goes down in close combat, it's much harder to save them and withdraw versus taking damage at range, withdrawing and trying again later. ________________________________________________________________________ Going back to town for better supplies is a good idea, unfortunately most of us are broke and we haven't even found a rabbit's hide to trade yet. Sorithar Posted March 27 Author Clone Share Posted March 27 (edited) @Chaz Hoosier, to be clear, not ignoring you, but Morn is in the enclosure with the oak and the others, while the new arrivals are at the entry to the ruined keep and cannot see him or be seen by him from that location. @Terran, Quote However, when the tiny rogue detects an Elf approaching the oak tree room and then hears a second one speak These elves have not yet approached the "oak tree room", per the map, they are at the mouth of the ruined keep. Jesse can spot them from her high perch however. Sorithar Posted April 13 Author Clone Share Posted April 13 Quote As Aeriel talks to the newcomer Elves who remain openly armed with their loaded bows pointed at the ground, Jessie likewise remains armed with her fancy composite short bow as well while the diminutive Halfling continues to stand watch from atop the large rock in the oak tree room. The elves are holding their bows, but they are not knocked, just FYI. Quote When Aeriel dodges directly answering the stranger's inquiries about the party's activities and instead pumps the Elves for information about themselves and this place, Jessie smiles from ear-to-ear as caster negotiates with the skill of a rogue! Aeruiel, not Aeriel FYI, is not a caster, she is a warrior, just so we're all on the same page moving forward.
