Session 3: The Library

You retreat to your rooms sometime and enjoy a restful night sleep. With only four open rooms, a few of you have to share a bit and I leave those arrangements to you. 

 

 You awaken in the morning to the scent of buttery sausage rolls - Agatha really makes the same thing every morning usually. On your way down the stairs, you immediately hear yelling.

 

 "VED! You bastard!" comes Ethel's voice following the sound of a door being slammed open.

 "Ah piss off you little git," yells the old man. 

"Give me my gold back you coward."

"That's my pay for trying to get me killed."

"Ethel, let it go..."

"You left us!"

"Just leave him alone, come on."

"It's not my fault you're too stupid to run away when the walls start trying to eat you. I didn't get to live this-"

 

 It's by now the first of you get downstairs and things escalate. Ethel pulls her dagger out and holds it to Ved's throat. "Give me back my go-" she starts to demand but in a blur of movement, Ved sr. grabs her wrist and slips off the back of his barstool, nudging it into her legs to trip her. He twists her arm backwards as she falls and produces a sharp knitting needle that he jams into the side of her neck hard enough for her to feel it but not hard enough to puncture it.

 

 "There there lass," he says.

 "Damnit Ved, don't do you do it," Agatha commands.

 "I'm not looking to draw blood in the Fateless Father lass, let the knife go. Aria, you stay on back or your sister'll be dead before your first tears hit your cheeks. Now Ethel, drop it and bugger off. You paid me to go, I went." Ved continues.

 

 "That is all our gold you bast..." Ethel's face is wracked by pain from the grip the older man has on her.

 

 "Yeah, that sounds like it's a bad time but you gotta let it go now. Come on, you won't be the first girl to bleed to death in my arms but I'll make you the last if you try to stick me again." 

 

 Aria is already starting to tear up and is watching helplessly. Ethel is in the wrist lock with Ved, still dangerous even old and dying, is holding her there. Agatha hasn't moved behind the bar but she looks more angry at what's about to happen than concerned someone might die in a moment.

 

 Both girls look haggard, their hair and clothes mostly still wet and disheveled. It didn't rain last night... Ved looks damp also but he doesn't look as completely run down as they do, probably because he fled whatever they found.

Ved Jr sizes up the scene with resignation but no surprise. He holds up his hands. "Everyone breathe. Sounds like stuff got weird and everyone's tempers are a bit heated."

He looks at the sisters. "Whatever it is, it's not worth being killed over, and I promise you that's what's about he's about to do if you keep on this path.

"How much did you pay him, and what for? I can square this."

Souris stared at the ceiling above the bed with a vague recollection of returning to the inn the night before.  She recalled a strong desire to protect the newborn, holding it close, and soon nothing else mattered, the tension in her body released and she had slept so soundly.  Even positioned in the corner as she was, she couldn't recall a time that she'd been so comfortable, and the baby's scent lingered in her nose.  She'd awoken in the middle of the night to its cries, finding herself covered in a blanket with her cloak and tunic washed.  Had she really been that deep in sleep?  After giving the child an final hug, she she'd transformed into a cat and made her way to the inn, finding her room and going to sleep in a daze.  Was that an easier life?  Her parents had settled down and seemed happier for it, but then they had already had their adventures, even if they were a little on the darker side of things.  She could feel the inn shake from the slammed door downstairs, there was no way to get back to sleep now even if she wanted to.  Not with all this shouting...

Dipping her hands into the washbasin, she splashed her face... something was different.  A part of her wanted to immerse herself in the water, feel it all over, to breath it in and flow with the currents.  It was an odd break and she knew what it meant.  When she'd first learned to shift it was similar, a feeling of wanting to bound through the forest and feel the wind in her fur.  She'd always had a block when it came to aquatic and avian forms, and assumed it was because she was a warm-blooded creature herself.  Baba had told her she'd get past it eventually and perhaps even surpass the crone, as her path had taken her elsewhere.  With a gesture she drew the droplets from her face and the table and had them flow back into the basin, playing with them and gath--- there was more shouting and another thump.  She grabbed her things and headed downstairs, the water still dancing in the bowl.

She looked at the seen with a sigh, unsure of who to sympathize with, as she herself wanted to smack Ethel silly not so long ago.  "Morning Agatha, can I have some porridge, not too hot, not too cold, and some sausage rolls with a cup of tea, if you please..." She then looked to Ved Sr and Ethel on the floor, as she sat at a table. "And can you please not ruin my breakfast with the scent of blood.  It's too early for this."

The dwarf sat with his face buried in the wooden table. Mornings and Murdain simply would never see eye to eye - far, far too early for anything other than sleep. Was this why people got knockout drunk? Somewhere, a rooster cried, making the dwarf to turn his head so that his ear was to the table, leaving the other to suffer the blood-curdling cries. "Another morning, and another chicken makes my hit list..." He growled miserably, visualizing leaping up on the chair and throwing a knife through the window at Ratbane, the offending animal in question. His lingering demise would get me through another thirty minutes at least... he grimaced and grabbed at the pint-sized mug of coffee near him, and drained a good quarter of the scalding liquid. The scrambled eggs and sausages were still being prepared, it made sense to get up, right...? He didnt want to see blood, right? Seemed like the grumpy one had his dad handled, but just in case... With a sigh, Murdain got up, mug in hand, and approached the scene of the accident. "I second that. Too early for this kinda thing; can we just... have both sides say what they think happened, and then we'll figure it out?" He shook his head groggily and took another sip of hot coffee. Worst come to worst, using knifes for this would be bad, but burns could heal easily enough. "Souris... Think we should check on the kiddo and his family? Y'know. Just in case." He also still had to talk to Creed about the Morys and the Skorn.

"She gave him twenty gold, the last of what we had, to escort us to the Library. He found it when he first came to the Vale. We got there and something attacked us, a slime of some sort, and he left us," Aria explained, trying to keep herself together.

 

 "You know where it is. I didn't sign up to fight that liquid death. Let it go lass, call it a life lesson." Ved steps back as Ethel gives in and drops her dagger. He then pushes her away and picks his stool up. "Agatha, the good ale today." Then he tosses a single silver coin to Aria. "Go eat and sleep it off. You're pretty, you'll find a way to keep going."

 Aaliyah was standing in her, completely naked, staring at herself in the mirror. Something had happened during the night to her body. Small green stands, matching her hair, had begun to spread over her skin. These strange lines has a chaotic floral pattern that highlighted her usually fair skin.

 

 She ran a finger along one. The skin was still soft on the lines but it was more firm, denser, like a soft tree bark. It was almost magical; Maybe it was actually magical. The lines hadn't spread to her face yet. "Well, that's good. I think my face is pretty but I don't know about these yet..." she said to herself - or to whoever her roommate for the night is. Callisto maybe?

 

 She uses a spell to clean her dress again as she didn't have much variety in her clothing yet. Then she went downstairs, arriving just in time to see Ethel on the ground and Old Man Ved calling for a drink. "Hey! What happened?" She asked, running towards Ethel and helping her back to her feet. "Are you two okay?" She casts a spell to more thoroughly dry the girls and clean their clothes, the use of the magic causing the new lines on her skin to glow softly. This wasn't lost on her. "Oh, that's a new light..." she mutters, briefly forgetting the girls.

Callisto refuses to get involved, but she is watching. She had come down when she heard the commotion, not as awake as she had wished to be but the unfolding scene very quickly woke her up. She shakes her head at the whole thing but again reminds herself not to get involved.

Ved Jr considers just giving them back the twenty gold, but it wasn't good business to be paying out money that wasn't even in this pocket yet. And the Squidow hunt didn't seem likely to payoff soon.

"I'll deliver Ved's contract for your exploration security, with three conditions: First, I won't ditch you, but if I say we're out, we're out. Second, anything we find that isn't a bloody book is mine. Third, I can subcontract additional security of my choice. Deal?"

What a nice family. Murdain sighed. It was far too early for this shit. What he was going to offer was more generous to the sisters than Ved's offer, but he wasnt about to try and fight the deal publically - what, did he think he was some knight in shining armor? Thug in semi-clean leather, at best. But contracts were important.... and so was not underminingand embarassing people you worked with. With a thought, he extended his mind to the druidess and the mercenary, using the link to Ved to speak to him while sipping coffee. Souris looked like she had about as much liking for mornings as himself.

~"Murdain the likely subcontracted security force here. Unless we're playing good guard bad guard of some sort, lets adjust the offer a bit, or I offer it so she doesnt lose face. One of them can make potions, offer us a discount. Costs em nothing now and profit later. Two, they cant eat books, and they're out of gold. Wont be useful. Three, very vague terms - stone slates and scrolls aint books but they'll want em."~

Ved's face does not remain expressionless as the voice echoes inside his mind, a look of surprise briefly crosses it, which he rearranges to confused.

Can you hear this? Does it work like this?

I don't care much if they are eating or not. It's not my fault they spent every last piece of gold they had on some stupid search. If you feel charitable, buy them breakfast, don't go soft on the bargain.

I said books, if they want more they can say it now, or else they can earn it later. A deal's a deal. They are desperate to find something. Let's see what they say before we offer 'em more.

He was as rotten as his father, it seemed. And twice as greedy. Pushing down his distate, Murdain took another sip of coffee waiting for the answer, and replied mentally: ~"Yes, it works exactly like this. I dont mean charity - I mean they're a lot less likely to take the deal if it means they have their books but starve anyway. And we want this deal, before someone else tries... 'charity'. Like Aaliyah, for example. If they take the deal, get the books, and leave to greener pastures, we're left without someone who can make potions. No need to explain how handy that is to folk like us who have no healing. Being on their good side is profitable. Discount can save us more money; lets see what they say, then we can offer compromise and throw in discount. More likely to take it."~ He'd had to negotiate with profit-oriented people before, and thought his words sounded logical enough, at least. What was this merc going to do with a slab of stone with funny doodles on it? Selling it when he - nor Murdain, for that matter - knew the price? His mentioning of the stone was because if this.. place was underwater, then any books or scrolls would be long rotten. Must be preserved in some other form; stone was good enough.

Seeing his breakfast approach, Murdain accepted it thankfully and took a seat, observing the situation unfold. ~"Trying to talk to Ved about what he offered being too high stakes. One can make potions, discount would cost em nothing for now."~ He sent to Souris, impaling a sausage and cutting off some of the scrambled eggs with his knife.

 Ethel doesn't know Aaliyah but when Aria goes to her, she doesn't question it and accepts the hand up and to a seat at a table. She rubs at her shoulder where her arm had been twisted.

 

 She starts to scowl at Ved until Sr barks, "Thats a damn stupid deal lass, consider that free advice because I'm so generous."

 

   Aria wines at even his voice and Ethel looks like she'd like nothing more than to stab him to death right now except he has her dagger. "I'll give you anything you want if you kill that bastard and give me my dad's dagger back."

 

 She didn't seem to think he'd actually take that deal though. "Well do it ourselves now that we know where it is. I'm not trusting you anymore than him."

 

 "We just need controlled fire, I can make alchemists fire. Our room is paid for the week Ethel, we can still do this," her sister agrees though she looks far less certain of it.

 "Trust me," Aaliyah says quickly. "I promise he won't leave you in danger and I'll come to to make sure! Ill even get your dagger back."

 

 She hops up and goes over to the older Ved and sits next to him. "That advice was very nice of you to offer her but I think that's her dagger you have by accident. Can she have it back and I'll get you a new one?" She asks sweetly. She hadn't caught the violence earlier and only suspected they had a disagreement and that old Ved was actually trying to offer good advice about a deal.

Ved Sr. Eyes you with bemusement but takes a look around and for a moment seems to soften up. With a sigh, he hands the dagger over but doesn't release it when you grab it. "I want a nice new knife Birdie."

 Then he releases it and looks at Jr. "You found a weird little bird, boy, but I think I like her. She dont stand a chance."
