She cringed to the side away from Barhuce's bomb, but needn't have bothered, it was nowhere near her. She moved down to close with the one that bit Val, impaling it with claws.

As Rain raised her scythe high to bring its blade down upon the still-convulsing body of one of the beetles, Violet raised her dagger to imitate the behavior and did the same to another closest to her, in effect ending the suffering of both insects.

 

T'Sarra's claws connected this time with the raised elytra of the remaining beetle as it was spreading its translucent wings underneath, and ripping through it and a wing, sank into the fleshy part of the bug's abdominal section, felling it before it could take off or attack anyone else.

"That all of them? Everybody in one piece?"

She moved back towards the others. She couldn't do much to help with their nausea, but could heal.

"Hey Rain, lemme see the big wand, will ya? You hang onto this one." T'Sarra asked the shaman, swapping her mostly depleted cure wand with the full one.

"No big wand jokes," she scowled at Barhuce, but there was a hint of a smirk to it. As the poor unfortunate male in the group he was destined to take that sort of abuse.

She moved in to work on Rain and Val, tapping each with the wand once to see how it went.

She looked around the cave while she waited for the others nausea to pass (assuming it did!) After they recovered, they could plan their route.

"I'm guessing none of you all want to go back in that water, but it does seem to loop around to the East there. Otherwise, I guess we're left with," she pointed at the five foot ledge.

"Might end up in the same place either way," she shrugged, then looked at how to climb up the ledge.

Barhuce stares in horror as he realizes that everyone did in fact move and he just got too caught up in the excitement to notice and how he's hurt his companions.... again. "No.... no big wand here. Just a big dummy." He straightens up and follows T'sarra to the ledge.

When the giant insects are no longer harming Val and the others, the android Violet mysteriously turned around and dove back into the water, headed the way you came.

 

Having a mini-panic attack, Val called after her, and urged everyone else to also get out of the water quickly as possible, "The water here is tainted, that's why daddy built Crowfeather Palace…"

 

Summoning all the strength they've got, Val and Rain move to the shore to help pull the other two out of the water, after which they each collapse against cave wall or the ledge wherever there was something closest to them to support their weight.

 

Moments later, Violet re-emerges from under the surface of the placid, yet acrid smelling underwater stream, her hand clutching the end of the rope that must've slipped from T'Sarra during their struggle to take a foothold onto this sooty beach. Just in time to be able to hear the comment about no big wand jokes.

 

Her eyes darted between the tiefling and Barhuce a couple of times in confusion as they made their humorous exchange, then sized up the male briefly before handing the end of the rope back to T'Sarra and Vri, pointing out a little crack in the cavern's rock they might be able to hammer something into.

 

As they sort out their gear and dry off, stripping down where necessary, Rain fishes out her wand to affect the exchange with T'Sarra. Her and Val indicate their thanks to the tiefling for the healing magic.

 

Now that everyone is safe from the hazards of the foul water and murderous insects, one can see that the glowing glands of the dead beetles are still luminous, providing some light for about ten feet around each of the insects' bodies.

 

The stony beach is soot-scarred, covered here and there with scorch marks. A small underwater spring seems to wind from the north to feed this stream here, but the source of the calm, dark water continues toward the north, winding east as it follows the damp cavern.

 

To the east of the beach, the five foot ledge sports three stalagmites near its edge, beyond which many more seem to choke off the low-ceilinged cavern beyond, the speleothems giving the impression of some vicious maw bearing wicked needlelike teeth, gnawing down upon some dark shape on its cave floor.

 

A minute or so later, the feeling of illness seems to subside, and those afflicted begin to feel better.

Barhuce

After recovering, Barhuce notes the glowing glands. He pulls his dagger out and spends a moment trying to remove one of the glands from a carcass. If it breaks, he will try spreading the contents on his mace to see if it ends up glowing.

While the others rest and sort their gear, Barhuce goes to poke around at one of the dead beetles. Attempting to extract out the bioluminous glands, he unfortunately punctures it with his dagger, causing some of the glowing goop to drain out of the bug's body.

 

Failing in his original objective, Barhuce nonetheless manages to coat the business end of both his mace and dagger in the stuff.

Peering over the ledge in the east, Vri sees a collection of stalactites and stalagmites choke this low-ceilinged cavern, making it difficult to squeeze between them. Matching stalactites close in from the five-foot-high ceiling, giving the impression of a maw of needlelike teeth bearing down on one another. A dead half-orc sprawls on the ground near the cave’s eastern entrance, just too far from being able to be reached without climbing up.

Moving on up the small cliff

"What in the? Where is she going!?"

T'Sarra exclaimed as Violet dove in, but before she could go after her, the android came out with the rope she hadn't even noticed she'd dropped.

"Oh uh.. Right! Good. Whoops? Thanks" she took the rope from Vi looking a little embarrassed, then hammered a piton into the crack and tied this end off.

"See? Happens to the best of us. Not a big dummy, no more than any of the rest of us," she smiled at Barhuce.

"Any battle you walk away from is a good one, far as I'm concerned. Sometimes accidents happen in the heat of battle, a bomb goes the wrong way, a rope gets dropped. Nobody's hurt so we move on. And I agree, dry land first it is."

She moved to the ledge, hopped up and scrambled up it, ending up disturbingly close to a dead orc. After a startled jump, she looked over the body quickly to make sure it was indeed dead. Assuming it wasn't getting back up, she turned to help haul the others up, then asked Val, or anyone else, "They look familiar? Anybody you know? Can anybody tell what happened to them?"

Black Hill Caves — Sooty Beach / Speleothem Cavern

After adjusting her armour and checking over her sidearm, Val decidedly waited until Barhuce was up over the edge until taking the tiefling's hand. Mumbling something about the rugs in a deadpan fashion, she moved over to kneel beside the body of the half-orc. "Oh no…"

 

Oblivious to the unspoken little piece of enmity growing between Val and the alchemist, Violet took his hand to climb up the ledge, and as she hauled herself over she leaned close and whispered into his ear, obviously still curious from the little joke whose finer nuances she missed earlier, "How big?"

 

"That's… Parda…" Val muttered as she identified the half-orc, her fingers gently palpating the edges of a couple of wounds, "Stab wounds. Short blade, maybe a dagger. Who would do this?"

 

"She was Domino's friend. Hell, just about everyone in town called her a friend really…" At which point the young human girl slumped back onto her heels, a gentle tear rolling down her cheek.

 

T'Sarra Only

Parda Garr was a popular brawler in town. While almost everyone called her a friend, she had always hung out with a pretty rough crowd.

Vri didn't know the person, but it was always better to know than not to know in her opinion.

"The same people who put out the torch," she said, "We can best move on and try to find the culprits."

She would carefully move forward, ready for traps and/or ambushes.

Dead orc storage

"Parda?" T'Sarra looked at Val then back at the orc and it was obvious now, even if she hadn't seen it before.

"Damn. Parda, she was a local, kind of a fixture. Big brawler type. I tussled with her a few times. Well once when I had come back from a successful expedition with Khonnir, had a few drinks and thought I could take her. She beat the snot out of me, taught me a good lesson. Next time we tussled it was a little less violent... and a lot more fun," she smirked not elaborating any further.

"Damn. She was a unit, look how whoever took her took her from behind where she couldn't see 'em. We should watch our backs. We should probably get Parda's body back up when we go too. I don't know who her people were, but well the whole town was kind of her people, in some ways."

"I don't recall her ever running with Khonnir though, do you Val? What did Dorga say about the other groups that went down here? Wonder which of them she was with?"

Still Vri was right. With nothing else to do and not ready to leave yet to take Parda out, it was time to move on, making sure their light sources and ioun torches were out and shining.

Barhuce glances at Vi, trying to decide whether to give the android a combined anatomy and culture lesson. Finally he whispers back. "Well huge obviously...." Realizing she might not understand still, he sighs and adds "The parts of male anatomy used for sexual acts stick are, um, well, it.... projects a bit like a stick, or wand or sword or something. Pretty much any guy will take an opportunity to make a joke about the size of his anatomy whenever something like a 'big wand' comes up in conversation."

Black Hill Caves — Sooty Beach / Speleothem Cavern

Still not entirely understanding Barhuce's roundabout way of explanation, the android all of a sudden tackles him against the cave wall, pressing her own body against his as she goes to investigate for herself.

 

After a brief moment of groping, she peels away and girlishly moves to Val, whispering and making various hand gestures. There is an intermittent emission of giggles and other girly sounds from the two now and again.

 

From behind still at the bottom of the cliff edge, Rain is still struggling climbing up, apparently having been forgotten by her crew, "Um, hello?"

 

Ahead, the speleothems are thick, and it takes some moments to squeeze through the narrower parts, though Vri and T'Sarra have no trouble making it past the worst of it.

 

Before them, a dark cavern opens up directly ahead, its twenty-foot-high ceiling thick with stalactites. A rocky shore overlooks a placid pool and stream, which seems to wind its way back toward the left, perhaps to join with the placid waters they had climbed out from. A small garden of toadstools and dark mold grows along the banks.

 

To the the right, a long cave tunnel seems to gently slope downward as it winds around a corner away from your immediate field of vision.
