Yasei

Having found a few items and passing them onto someone else to verify and look into it Yasei took her spot alongside the wagon and carried on. It didn't seem like any of the small trinkets really mattered to her but you never know what might be found. Seeing as they were now on their way, Faith looked to make conversation and it seemed the first to join as Rhigoxus to be followed by Grim. It seemed that there were mixed thoughts on the encounter and as one who guarded the wagon Yasei kept her words to herself. And time passed on...

There seemed to be no other trouble during the journey. Time slowly passes, the sun began to dwindle in the sky, and eventually one of their targets was before them. A small village that was on the way to their final point nestled quietly against the edge of a forest. Yasei could see the people moving to and fro, likely the dangers of the road they first faced was a worry they did not share. "The bounty of the forest can protect those who offer it their praise. I see less else that they would use to build their homes but perhaps one such as yourself could enlighten them of their folly." It seemed Rhigoxus would stand guard for the evening, though before she could say anything else, Grim broke into a strange song with many words that Yasei wasn't too familiar with. It seemed the Faith and Grim got along just fine as they carried their bit back and forth while Rhigoxus seemed confused as did Yasei.

"Resting sounds good. I wonder if our dinner could not be gathered from the woods. Perhaps a local hunter may be able to tell us if there are any traditions to respect before venturing inside. Though I wonder if they'd allow outsiders such as us to take part in their hunting grounds. Perhaps we shall see when we arrive in the village."

  • 2 weeks later...
Phandelin

You start to make your way in to town with the oxen and wagon, the tracks are wide enough to allow vehicle passage all through town, although there are narrower alleyways between some of the buildings.

You head towards the center of the small town, passing a store with wares laid out in front; a clever arrangement of shovels that seem to be holding themselves up, a similar arrangement of pickhelves, and other hardware items. The sign above it all says Barthen's Provisions.

Opposite is the Blacksmith's forge; a strong-looking man is noisily hammering away on pieces of work at his anvil visible from the street.

As you approach the town square you seen an Inn on the left. It is a new building, newer even than those around it; made of rough-hewn timbers, and fieldstone. The painted sign on the front pronounces it the Stonehill Inn.

Just beyond is the open space of the town square which has a Shrine to what appears to be the local Goddess of Luck on one side.

People pay you little mind as you walk through town; they don't ignore you but neither do they seem of a mood to stop and chat. Some children are running about the square playing some sort of chasing game between the buildings and people.

Faith idly asks "do I get bonus points if I run one of these brats over, no one will miss the odd one or two"?

She does not of course run anyone over, looking around she asks "see if the smithy over there knows where we can find our destination"?

At the Smithy

As Rhigorax approaches the Smith keeps hammering; even after the question he makes one or two more strikes with his hammer and then thrusts the piece of work in to the barrel of water to quench it before turning to speak.

"Sorry friend, " he pauses to take in the fact that Rhigorax is far from one of his usual customers, "sometimes the iron can't wait. You'll have to ask that again, it's loud work in the forge."

When Rhigorax repeats his question the Smith pauses on thought and then responds; "Rockseeker? I know of them; I can never keep straight which of the three is which, and you almost always only see one or two so can't tell them apart. Can't say I've seen any of them these last few days, perhaps even a week or so. They were in and out of town for supplies quite regular for a while, prospecting in the hills around time I believe.

You might try the Inn; I doubt they'll be there in the day time but if they are in town, or have been in town, someone there will know. Or try old Barthen opposite; he's a bit of a busybody and likes to keep track of the comings and goings of folk in town. He'll definitely want to know about you folk, seeing as how you aren't exactly typical around here."

Sir Grim

I looked over the blacksmithing tools, and scratched my chin, I was not one for talking to people, I was more one for helping people. I smiled at the gentleman smith, and asked "Do you need any help? I can at least ferry horseshoes for you till my friends business is done, or supper so you have more time for more important parts." Might even get a neat little bonus out of it too I thought.

If the gentleman refused my offer, oh well, I could walk around with the rest of my compatriots.

Yasei

It seemed this small herd was used to different people coming and going. As there were no outward signs of fear or malice towards her group, Yasei gave a small nod. At least there would likely be no blood tonight here. Following the group and the wagon, through the town towards the center, she sniffed at the air to see if anything unusual was about. Eventually turning her attention to the rest of the group as Rhigoxus made its way to speak with the blacksmith. Following along the way, Yasei kept a lookout just to make sure nothing would happen.

"Ah, we appreciate the information. We will check in at the local resting spot. Would there be any concern or reason these... Rockseekers may not have shown themselves within the local tribe? Also, there are more than one? Interesting.. I thought we were to seek out a single one.. This is most confusing now. Rhigoxus, say we first check the resting spot? We should see if they have space for all of us else we may need to find a sufficient place to camp outside."

Faith pulls up outside the Inn and asks one of the others "could you be a daaaarling and watch the cart, I will speak to those inside and find our quarry" she says and then heads inside.

Once inside Faith heads to the bar and chats with the head barman/woman "hi, I seek someone from the Rockseeker tribe, can you point them out .....err.... please" she asks uncomfortably.

In the Smithy

The Smithy gives a friendly smile to Sir Grim; "Thanks for the offer, friend; but I'm doing just fine, thank you. I've sent my apprentice off to find a few things, once he's back he'll be moving things around and tidying up around me again. I hope you find your friend; now if you'll excuse me I need to get to work on this next piece."

Without waiting for a response he pulls another piece of red-hot metal from the coals and holds it on the anvil before starting to hammer again.

In the Inn

There are very few people in the main room of the Inn, folks are likely working or tending their crops.

Faith finds someone behind the bar, stacking wooden plates and cups.

"The Rockseekers? They came to town a few weeks back, stayed in the Inn a couple of nights and then headed out to the hills. They popped back for a night indoors a few time, I guess they were grabbing more supplies before heading back out. Last time they were here, they were huddled together in the corner over there discussing something, seemed pretty excited about it. I'm not proud to say I heard them saying something about a mine, but I don't know what. Since then I haven't seen them; based on their normal pattern I'd have expected them back yesterday or the day before, but perhaps they just left town? Heading out to the hills, there's always the risk of wild animals and such; or perhaps they just drew too much attention to themselves and didn't pay their dues."

At that point a man enters the bar from outside, he is dressed for the outdoors; a stout leather jerkin covered with a red cloak. He sits at a table by the door, puts his muddy boot up on another chair and seems to settle in to wait.

The barmaid glances at him and says, "If you'll excuse me, I need to see to this gentleman; once I've served him I'll be back."

She makes her way back to the bar, pours an ale, arranges some bread and cheese on a platter and carries it over to the new arrival without him saying a word. She places the tray down in front of him, takes half a step back and waits. He says something to her, she shakes her head, then he puts his foot back on the floor, leans forward and points a finger at her. She shakes her head again, he quickly drains his mug, stands up and walks out without a backwards glance.

Faith watches the interaction between the man and the maid, when he points his finger Faith stares at him with an evil glare and her form begins to ripple but he leaves so she allows it to settle. When the maid returns Faith asks "what was his problem? he looked a little rude to me" she says pushing her now empty mug back to be re-filled.

Outside

Rhigoxus waits by the cart as the others head inside. He observes the people of this small settlement going about their lives.

A small group enter the town square from the far side, the East of town, and quickly the atmosphere changes; mothers call their children to them, small groups chatting separate and go their separate ways. The three new arrivals, all dressed in distinctive dark red cloaks split up and begin walking around town; one walks up the road to the store, another passes Rhigoxus to enter the Inn. A minute or so later he exits the Inn again and heads towards the Forge and ducks inside.

Just as the second man comes out of Barthen's store, there are raised voices from the forge and the first man stumbles out of the door. The Smith's booming voice can be heard shouting, "I've told you before, I don't need your protection and you'll get nothing from me!"

The man stumbling from the Forge picks himself up and confers with his companion; they head back towards the Eastern side of the square to meet up with their third companion who has reappeared from a side street.

Inside

The barmaid simply says, "Let me get you a refill for that."

When she returns it looks like she might have been crying whilst her back was turned.

"Don't worry about him, he's just a bad customer is all."

OOC

Go ahead and make some rolls for me folks; those who are inside (I think 3 of you?) can roll Insight (unless you have a good reason for something else); anyone outside with Rhigorax can roll Perception (or, again, convince me that something else is better).
