The furniture is solid and well-built without being overly ornate. His desk sits in the middle of the room facing you, with a large stained-glass window behind him. Bookshelves can be found on either side, flanking his position, and they are filled with a collection of books and trophies. A stand holding a full suit of armor waits in the corner.

 

Suddenly, Abbot Valentin rises from his desk and raises his hands heavenward as he proclaims “In the name of all that is holy and just, by the great god Hieroneous himself, I charge you find the remains of our glorious Sir Gregor and to uncover this evil force within these hallowed halls. With this deed done in secret, bring both into the light and let Holy Hieroneous judge them by what what is revealed, for evil cannot abide the light. Sir Gregor will be returned, order restored, and evil vanquished by HIS righteous strength. As I have spoken, so let it be. Heironeous’s blessings be with you, my children.”

 

You have been blessed.

 

The Abbot pauses for a moment as the holy reverie leaves his face. For the first time since you have met him he asks “Before you go, are there any questions that I can answer for you?”

"Thank you for your blessing, Abbott." Orin respectfully bows his head.

"The first question that comes to mind, though it is the least likely to have an easy answer - has anyone new joined the abbey recently, or has someone begun to behave suspiciously or out of character? Also, the notes speak of a cavern or passage of some sort. I understand it may be unprecedented, but if my badger companion could accompany us to places he might not otherwise be allowed his affinity for burrows might enable us to more easily suss out some hidden subterranean access."

Your animal is free to wander the grounds. It would be disrespectful to Lord Hieroneous to allow beasts within his sacred halls, I’m afraid I must insist upon that point. You are welcome to stay at the Abbey at any point during your investigation. We will offer what help we can.”

 

The door to the Abbot’s chambers opens, and a monk in white robes stands awaiting instructions.
“Brother Clophas, please escort these people back to the front gate, and add their names to the list of accepted visitors. They are free to come and go as they please.”

 

“As you wish, my Lord Abbot,” Clophas agrees. “This way please,” he says as he smiles leading silently back out to the front gate, where he asks Brother Didimus to add your names to the list of visitors. The brothers both bid you Godspeed and return to their duties.
 

It is now late at night.

Racial Abilities:

Brody listens to the Abbot and gives a thanks after he gives his blessing. He gives the Abbot a thoughtful look when he asked if they had any further questions. "Who would you say is your biggest gossip in this Abbey? I am sure I can speak to them as a bard trying to learn stories of this abbey to help in my craft, in reality I would be trying to sift through what they know of everyone to hopefully find your spy within your midst." after he gets his response he follows the rest out to their rooms. He hoped they would get this resolved soon, he frowned at the thought of being put to work. Coming from a noble family he had never really done much manual labor and did not much want to do anything to harm his hands as they were his livelihood though in the end he would not shirk his duties if need be.

image.jpeg.d2277f618a1c793fc9c5454dd0078876.jpegTheir initial meeting with the Abbott concluded, Orin follows in the wake of Badger - making sure to collect his companion before he can become a terror to the abbey's inhabitants (edible or otherwise). He clicks and chirps until the animal makes an appearance, and then follows the others toward his assigned sleeping quartersI'm basing this on there being some places Badger is allowed to go. If the sleeping quarters are off limits, Orin will find an out-of-the-way spot he can stick his bedroll and hang out with his buddy for the night..

While they may come as a shock to the brothers and sisters of the abbey, Orin needs to prepare soulmelds to assist in the trial ahead - particularly one that will allow him to see in dark places, should they find the mysterious passage spoken of in the note - and one which will help protect him in case they encounter creatures of evil.

The individual rooms of the monastery are simple stone rooms with modest furniture, but they are clean and dry. A thick woolen blanket is provided to ward off the cold, and a hand-written copy of The Book of the Code has been provided to each of you.

There is one noticeable change, however - floating just above the Totemist's face is a reptilian mask, his features obscured by its baleful countenance, and a cold green glow spilling from its eyes.

Having checked his gear, Orin greets the others when they emerge from their chambers. "It occurs to me we have an additional problem to solve, though perhaps it's related to the first. Are these goblin attacks that are denying supplies to the abbey part of the conspiracy, or just a coincidence? Even if they're not connected, should we make an effort to stop them in order to curry good favor with the monks here?" He raises an eyebrow behind the mask, looking over the group.

"And if we decide we want to deal with these raids, should we head out and deal with them first - or focus on the immediate mystery of the disappearing body and possibly trying to locate these purported underground passages?"

Brody listens to Orin as he talks about what their next steps should be. "Perhaps what we need right now is more information. Some of us could go out and scout the goblins and gather as much info about them we could while not engaging with them, while the rest stay here and investigate what is happening around the abbey. Then we meet back up and compare notes." While separating the group might not be the best idea if they had two goals it might be the best way to divide and conquer.

"Besides, Badger would probably appreciate not being penned up and forbidden to wander freely." The badger in question makes a happy snarful as his armoring is finished and he is rewarded with a treat.

Goblin patrol

It takes a while to backtrack, but you find the place where Brother Orden joined the main trail after about an hour. Following his off-road trail, you can see broken branches, disturbed leaves, and the occasional bloodstain. His tracks lead about about a mile SE of the nearest village. The trail of blood enters into the woods to the west of the road, and becomes slightly more difficult to follow as it ends and mixes with another set of bloody prints.

 

It has gotten more difficult to track, so I need another check (Track or Spot).

Q and Brody

At the Abbey

Brody and Q find that the monastery is a busy place. Monks are hard at work completing their assigned tasks, which seem to consist primarily of physical fitness, prayer, and working in the community kitchen. It is in the kitchen that you have the most success: slicing vegetables is work for eyes and hands, but the monks are free to chat while they work.

 

You are invited to join the monks in both prayer and sword practice. You may accept or decline as you please. Investigation takes several hours.

 

  • Sir Gregor the Just was a human paladin of Hieroneous, noted for his skill in battle and his strong morals. When he passed, he was given full funeral rites, and his body was put to rest in the main chapel. Many people came to pay their respects.
  • It was after about a week that his body disappeared. No one seems to know why, some say he was taken into heaven by Hieroneous, others blame grave-robbers interested in selling his arms and armor.
  • The Abbot has send out patrols of monks to guard the roads, but they have been wholly unsuccessful in finding the goblins.
  • Abbot Valentin is trying to create a council of good-aligned Abbots, but this is proving to be a challenge. Some say that his difficulty with the goblins is not exactly inspiring others to believe in his leadership. Naturally, most of the other abbots feel that they should be in charge.
