Chapter 1: By the Pricking of my thumb....

Michael

Recommended Posts

Decision made, the group moves out.

The town is only a few hours from your current position, though Grimley takes a slightly circuitous route so it actually takes slightly longer, and the group come to an elevated position north of the town as dawn breaks.

Black Pit is, well, aptly named. Barely bigger than a village, at a guess a hundred people, a mish mash of lean-to's and badly constructed buildings sticking up out of the mud of the unsealed main street. At the north end of town (closest to your position) are a few well built brick buildings, the largest a villa of sorts that Grimley points out as belonging to Mayor Huntsbirdge. There's also an inn (The Chasm), the two dragonmark hoiuse way stations (Deneith and Orien), and 3 more that Grimley says belong to "nobles" as much as they exist in Black Pit.

There's a large open area in the south which acts as a market, which seems to be the primary purpose of Black Pit.

Huntsbridge's villa is 3 storey, brick with tiled roof, with windows on all floors. It is is well set back from the other buildings.

I've shared a couple of images of the house symbols on roll20

MolgrugMolgrug is a little unhappy that Brandisher is so easily persuaded, having hoped to have subjected the group to another three or four hours of torture lively and stimulating debate, at the least. Normally, he would have tried throwing a spanner in the works - an innocuous question, perhaps, that leads to more discussion, or even better faint praise for the current plan that is so badly delivered as to leave everyone else questioning it - but he's playing the long game. Plenty of time for that, later.

"Well, what a picturesque place!" Molgrug says as he surveys the flyspeck backwater that is Black Pit, glad that the unflattering descriptions they've had of it did not disappoint. Despite their guide's explanations, he still isn't quite sure what a "dragonmark house waystation" is, but he nods sagely all the same, because nobody else needs to know that he doesn't know. "You know what, Gimley? You have done an acceptable job! I think we shall keep you alive a bit longer yet - that's good news, isn't it?"

"Well this place certainly lived up to its exceedingly low expectations." What, that ponce is still tagging along, once again looking like an elf instead of something with proper wings and claws. And contributing very little beyond a few light shows and some continued grumbling about the lack of good hair care tools.

“Will the witch will be somewhere in there along with the Mayor?" Kerapsis points towards the Mayor's residence. "Looks like it's getting light out soon, should we try to move in disguise or see if we can sneak in before the town wakes up?”

Surveying the meager sight of the town, Kerapsis is silently thankful that they didn't appear in a capable metropolis. This town looks weak and defenseless.

DESCRIPTION Kaida was once a powerful and beautiful creature. She had sweeping wings, full and strong, and glorious horns! Her body was a powerful killing machine through which poisonous toxins flowed to strike down her enemies with. Her body had been strong and hardy, capable of going toe to toe with devils of much higher ranks than she.

Now she is but a pale echo of what she once was.

She was never a hulking creature and that is still true. Not even reaching two feet in height she is as tiny as ever. Her wings are small, much less muscle supporting their frame, and her tail, as long and sinuous as ever, was tipped by a stinger that was coated in what should have been a vibrantly colored sap-like toxin. Instead it was dull, and watery, quite weak indeed.

Her choice of color is always black and gray when given the option. Sometimes she'll stray from the more "bland" colors to exceedingly dark blues and purples but she does so very rarely. Clothing with folds and hidden pouches or pockets for concealed weapons are always of interest to her and she is rarely without a hooded vest.

If you use the lower attack (or if both rolls are the same result) and the attack hits then you deal an extra 1d6 points of cold damage as both strikes hit.
, Child of Shadow (SH, Stance)Shadow Hand 1 Stance; Supernatural

If you move at least 10' during your turn you gain concealment against all melee and ranged attacks until the start of your next turn as well as the standard benefits of concealment. This cannot be used to hide in any form, you still need some other terrain feature that would normally allow you to use the Hide skill.

Kaida actually laughed when she spied what they'd called a town. It was a joke, she knew it must be, she half expected it to all vanish or some illusion be ripped asunder to reveal a real town. At least something with a stone wall ringing it, even if was just a walking wall at 5' or so. This was... clearly... NOT a town! Obviously, despite their loss of powers and abilities, she was finding the whole situation quite entertaining as she fought to keep a straight face, "What do you mean, sneak in? Look, the place is right there. We could just keep the buildings, the only actual real building here, between us and the rest of these... shacks... and no one is going to see us anyways. Even the larger of us! Let's just move in now before its any brighter than it is now. We hop in a back window because by the looks of this place the building is going to have any number of them... heh... and voila! If we move quickly we can simply murder most of them in their sleep too."

Great News, dread master

Responds Grimley to Molgrug, without any noticable hint of rancour or irony. He then replies to Kerapsis

Aye, she must be in there, not seen her ouit and aboiut without Huntsbridge by 'er side.

Meanwhile the rest of the group realise that both Kaida and Kerapsis are correct, Black Pitters are clearly not "morning people". There's few people about, the house could be approached from behind without anyone really noticing, and there's both windows and a back door.

Molgrug

"Oh, um, no, no I don't think so," Molgrug interjects. "Just "hop" in a window? I can't do that. I get a spot of sciatica... very unpleasant... can't be hopping in anywhere."

Brandisher.png.4abccf9766ad79862caaa7976666ebfe.png The hamlet where they now find themselves is pitiful, barely worth the time it would take to raze the houses and butcher the peasants. If they are not there for bloodshed and slaughter, he wishes to remain for as short a time as possible.

The mayoral residence seems the only place worth visiting - and perhaps there'll be valuables inside that can be of use to them.

Brandisher stalks across the street to the back of the house, then begins to clamber up the windowsills by any available handholds to reach a window on the second floor.

Julien takes up active lookout duty, since he doesn't immediately scream 'something off' while he's looking like an elf at the moment. "Be quick and quiet about it..." is his only contribution to the planning.

Molgrug

"Now, now, just wait one moment..." Molgrug complains, to no avail, as first Creed and then some of the others begin to creep directly towards the manor house. "Stop it! Come back!"

His hissing seems to fall upon deaf ears, however, either because the other fiends have learned to ignore him or because, in his desire not to wake any of the townspeople (if this flyspeck hamlet can really be called a "town"), they can't actually hear him.

In frustration, the arcanaloth lets out a frustrated "Hmph!" and glares at the bandits before trailing after his otherworldly companions.

Kerapsis smirks at Creed's comment towards Molgrug, and follows the group. She decides to follow Brandisher up to the second floor on the off chance that he encounters any suitable resistance inside before reuniting with the others.

Missing the strength her wings once had, she begins her attempt to scale the building, trying to cause as little noise as possible.

Roll 20 updated. There's 3 maps, the ground floor, first floor and roof from bottom to top. I have moved your tokens around the map so you can see through the windows. Roll20 has a new feature called "doors" which you I'm hoping you can actually click on and open.

Your tokens are at the bottom of the map effectively at the back ground floor. Let me know which floor/window you want to enter by.

Brandisher.png.4abccf9766ad79862caaa7976666ebfe.pngBrandisher steps out from the fiendish party and approaches the front door of the mayor's manor.

Sword held at the ready, he presses one canine ear to the door, listening to try and detect anyone who might be standing just inside.

Brandisher moves to the front door and makes a Listen check.

If he cannot hear anyone just inside, he'll open the door.
