Chapter 1: By the Pricking of my thumb....

Michael

Recommended Posts

Brandisher hears nothing at the main door, the room beyond sounds empty.

Creed sees three servants in the ground floor west wing. They appear to be packing furniture and equipment into crates, a process that clearly has only started recently (given none of the crates are full or sealed) and for which the servants have been told that haste is a good idea.

Molgrug

"Psst!" Molgrug hisses loudly in Brandisher's ear. "Do you hear anything?"

"Yes! I hear a loud-mouthed jackal about to have his nose torn from his head!", he whispers back through bared fangs.

"… but the hall appears empty!"

Molgrug

"Well, before we go inside, we should discuss strategy," Molgrug suggests. "We could of course disguise ourselves as humans, perhaps the local riff-raff... I am, actually, a master of disguise, having learnt from the great Gorgomoth -- do you know him? You must have heard of him? He worked for... oh, what was his name again? The Pit Fiend?"

 Brandisher.png.4abccf9766ad79862caaa7976666ebfe.png"Be silent, you blabbering fool!"

Brandisher did not in fact learn any more Pit Fiend names - or any other powerful devils for that matter - than he had to, even after joining the devils’ side.

"Turn yourself into whatever you want, but my plan is this: breach the house through this door, and if anyone spots me I will slay them!"

Molgrug

"Oo-ooh, someone got out of bed on the wrong side this morning!" Molgrug replies, seemingly untroubled by Brandisher's outburst. "I must insist, however, that you do not slay anyone who spots us - it would be far better to capture this witch the mayor alive. Well, the witch, anyway, at least until we ascertain whether she's of any use to us!"

The arcanaloth turns away, allowing Brandisher to lead the way into the villa.

"I actually don't think it was a Pit Fiend after all," he mutters, clearly not content to let the matter lie. "It was an Ultraloth, the big fellow, from the Grey Wastes."

DESCRIPTION Kaida was once a powerful and beautiful creature. She had sweeping wings, full and strong, and glorious horns! Her body was a powerful killing machine through which poisonous toxins flowed to strike down her enemies with. Her body had been strong and hardy, capable of going toe to toe with devils of much higher ranks than she.

Now she is but a pale echo of what she once was.

She was never a hulking creature and that is still true. Not even reaching two feet in height she is as tiny as ever. Her wings are small, much less muscle supporting their frame, and her tail, as long and sinuous as ever, was tipped by a stinger that was coated in what should have been a vibrantly colored sap-like toxin. Instead it was dull, and watery, quite weak indeed.

Her choice of color is always black and gray when given the option. Sometimes she'll stray from the more "bland" colors to exceedingly dark blues and purples but she does so very rarely. Clothing with folds and hidden pouches or pockets for concealed weapons are always of interest to her and she is rarely without a hooded vest.

If you use the lower attack (or if both rolls are the same result) and the attack hits then you deal an extra 1d6 points of cold damage as both strikes hit.

If you move at least 10' during your turn you gain concealment against all melee and ranged attacks until the start of your next turn as well as the standard benefits of concealment. This cannot be used to hide in any form, you still need some other terrain feature that would normally allow you to use the Hide skill.

The tiny devil moved forward with Brandisher and Molgrug quietly. At least until Molgrug simply kept chatting, as usual. Its like his mouth was a water spigot with a broken handle, that simply wouldn't stop. Kaida shook her head, amused by the situation even as Brandisher all but snapped back at Molgrug's seemingly uncontrollable chatter. Still, she knew that despite this not being a time where it mattered that if Molgrug couldn't learn to shut his yap he was going to be a danger.

"Go Brandisher." She whispered quietly as she waited behind and to his right. "I'm with you, better to strike together and clear the way quickly." Her diminutive grin revealed a mouth full of sharp, needle-like canines.

Looking at them preparing to go in. "If you're going in, at least try to be quiet so we get some surprise."

Creed tries the left door gently, hoping it is unlocked.

The ground floor is ridiculously grand for this dump of a village. The entire area is built of marble and is clearly at least several decades old, with the walls covered in faded mosaics and murals depicting fairly mundane farm life. About a dozen large crates are piled in the center of the northern room.

Doors opened, B,C and K moved into initial foyer. Feel free to move around a bit.

Julien, from his vantage point at the window spots two figures deep within the building that he doesn't recognize. He strides swiftly the thirty or so feet to the now open doorway and whispers in to the few fellow fiends just beyond the doorway. "I saw two figures in there, in a ways and off to the left. Be wary." Then he takes up a new rearguard position at the doorway, the way out for when things go pear shaped.

Molgrug

Molgrug nods in agreement, creeping in an almost comically surreptitious fashion after the others.

"Quite right!" He hisses. "We shall strike them from the shadows, like--"

CRASH!

The sound of a fragile ornament hitting the floor, knocked off by Molgrug's clumsy elbow, echoes throughout the hall. The arcanaloth looks down at the broken pieces sheepishly.

"Um... oops?"

“Watch it!" Kerapsis hisses at Molgrug as she moves behind Creed. Heeding the various warnings, she watches her step to not draw unnecessary attention to the group.

"I'll follow your leads, if we're seen by anyone, let's clean up the loose ends," she addresses this openly to the group, but nods towards Creed and Brandisher who seem to be leading the way.

Sure enough, the internal west door opens and one of the servants comes out to investigate the noise. He sees 3 of the fiends, and then stands there, in a combination of shock and horror.

Roll init, if you beat the servant's 7 you get to do something before the screaming starts.

image.png.5b313c1564dd41e36c999e2f8c753d9c.pngCreed dashes forward, to stand right before the man, and reaches out almost languidly with both hands to take the servant by the arms. With a low growl and a flash of long canines he gazes into the mans eyes with his own yellow eyes.

"Don't call out. If you do, you die."

His grip is like iron as his eyes bore into the mans. He tries to make his innate magic to dominate the mans will come to the fore but it seems lacking.

The cry dies on the man's lips as he stares in rigid fear at the nightmare now holding him far too close. He starts to babble, in a whisper no less.

Mayor's upstairs, so is the witch. Not many guards they...uh...had some kind of fight....

It's clear as the frightened man looks right and left he has an understanding of what that fight might have been against.

Please, it's them you want, not me, let me go and you'll never see or hear me again.
