Banana yelps in pain as the bee's mandibles dig deep into exposed flesh. Yelling back in Gnoll, he lashes out twice with his staff before raising his shield spell. He doesn't seem to want to spend his precious spellpower on these creatures.

Apparently whatever was agitating the local insect population was affecting the bees as well, Omolara noted as she drew and nocked an arrow. A step to her right gave her the clearest line of fire to the bee that hadn't fled. Taking and holding a steadying breath, she calmly assessed the bee and let her first arrow fly. Then, in a twinkling, she drew and fired another.

Bee reflex vs Sweet Tooth fling magic

Map

Sweet Tooth flings magic, Lycar swings at the bee, connecting. Banana hits it twice with his staff. Thura heals Banana and casts guidance on him. Omolara then proceeds to shoot it in the head, cause the insect to fall to the floor, twitching, then motionless.

Footsteps from behind as someone new enters the area.

This specialized cream serves as a repellent to stave off insects. The repellent also binds with a number of common insect venoms, dulling the potency and giving the wearer's immune system a boost to resist venoms. Once applied to your skin, the repellent grants you an item bonus to Fortitude saving throws against poisons for 4 hours. In addition, any arthropods (insects, spiders, scorpions, crabs, and similar invertebrate animals) must attempt a Will save when attempting to attack you with a melee Strike, or with a swarm attack such as the spider swarm's swarming bites. The arthropod then becomes temporarily immune for 1 minute.

Critical Success The creature can act normally.
Success The creature is frightened 1.
Failure The creature is frightened 2.
Critical Failure The creature is frightened 2 and fleeing.

The papers tacked to the walls provide sketches of the passages to areas C2, C3, and C4. The passage between areas C3 and C4 appears on one of the maps with a portion of the wall circled with a question mark

An intensifying drone emanates from the passage in the center of the south wall. A hero who succeeds at a DC 15 Nature or Survival check identifies it as the buzzing of enormous bees.

The tread of heavy iron shod boots echoed through the tunnels as the bee's droning buzz stilled.

A hulking shape filled the doorway, seemingly massive in the flickering shadows of the torch she carried. No, not carried. For she held no sconce or stick of wood in her hand as she approached. Instead she held a searing ball of raw flameBase Kinesis

Impulse Kineticist Primal

It's trivial for you to create some of your element or alter a portion of it that already exists. Choose one of your kinetic elements to affect. This impulse has a range of 30 feet, and the Bulk of the target must be negligible or light. The GM decides what Bulk the element is. You can't affect an element that's magical, secured in place (like a stone mortared in a wall), or attended by a creature unwilling to let you. Choose one of the following options, though the GM might allow you to make similar small alterations. Base Kinesis can't deal damage or cause conditions unless otherwise noted.

• Generate You bring an ordinary, non-magical piece of the chosen element from its elemental plane. The element can be used for any of its normal uses. For example, air can be breathed by an air-breathing creature, and fire casts light and can ignite flammable substances.
• Move Move an existing piece of the element up to 20 feet in any direction. If you bring it into your space, you can catch it in an open hand. You can Sustain the impulse to keep moving the element.
• Suppress You destroy an existing piece of element, such as snuffing out a flame or evaporating water from a cup. This affects only natural forms of the element, not durable, crafted goods like a stone statue, metal lock, or wooden door.

Level (+4) The range increases by 15 feet, and the maximum Bulk increases by 1 (allowing Bulk 1 at 5th level).
, gauntleted fingers digging into the sphere that seemed to burn without fuel. Magic then, some Infernal incantation of fire to bring light. For as she reared up to her full height in the doorway, the light revealed the truth of what she was. There was no mistaking her silhouette for anything other than what she was. A Chelaxian Hellknight, favored of Asmodeus! Worse, one of their Signifiers, a Mage trained by Devilspawn for battle and conquest. How had such a one as that come here, come to Magaambya?

Yet...

As her Magefire revealed more than just her shadowed silhouette, it was immediately clear that something was wrong. She was not encased in a gleaming suit of Chelaxian Hellplate, for such was always of the finest make. No, though she might have looked the part from afar, closer inspection revealed the mail she woreMetal Carapace:

Impulse, Kineticist, Metal, Primal

Sheets of bent and rusted metal cover you in an armored shell. The carapace is medium armor but uses your highest armor proficiency. The carapace's statistics are: AC bonus +3, Dex Cap +2, Check Penalty -2, Speed Penalty -5 feet, Strength 14, Bulk 2, Group plate, Armor Traits noisy. An bonuses, runes, and magical abilities of your actual armor are suppressed, but any that could apply to the metal carapace are replicated onto it.

When you use this impulse, you can create a rusty steel shield in a free hand, which uses the statistics of a regular steel shield. You can Shield Block with this shield even if you don't have that feat. The hand wielding this shield counts as a dree hand for using impulses. The shield crumbles to flakes of rust if it becomes broken or leaves your grasp.

Hardness 5; HP (BT) 20 (10)

The impulse lasts for 10 minutes, and you can Dismiss this impulse. If you use this impulse again, any existing one ends. The metal is rusted and fragile. If you take damage from a critical hit, the metal shatters and the impulse ends.

Level (+3) The shield's Hardness increases by 1, its HPP by 4, and its BT by 2.
was rough and unfinished. It bore the shape of Hellplate, but with none of the elegance of those infamous knights. It was jagged, rusted, in places it even looked melted. It was almost flimsy, as if one solid blow would be all it took to send the whole suit crumbling to pieces. Indeed, even as she paused in the doorway the gorget at her cracked and fell. No, not fell. It audibly cracked yes, but rather than falling to the ground it was born on some mysterious wind, fluttering about the strange and broken looking Hellknight like a leaf on the breeze. It circled her once, twice, and then reattached herself to the plate at her shoulder.

Strangest of all was her mask, for those any who had dealings with the Chelaxians in their past recognized it immediately as a Signifier's. Well, part of it at least. The part that had been one of the masks of that Infernal order looked to have been melted. Mostly slag now, it only covered the left side of her face, and looked like it might have been seared into her skin. Stranger still was the second mask she had seemingly placed over it. This covered the rest of her features, hiding what the ruined Signifier's mask failed to protect. While everything about her armor was rough and ruined, this second mask was a true working of craftmanship. It was beautiful where the rest of her was sharp and ugly, the only part of the steel on her that did not look like it was about to crumble. It looked like the wing of the Emperor Bird, yet forged in steel, with each feather tinted a different color through some exceedingly detailed work of metallurgyBackground: Alloysmith

Blacksmithing might be an ancient profession, but you are its cutting edge. You’ve studied the properties of different metals, experimented with them by combining them, exposing them to different elements and processes, and have even delved into the metaphysical nature of metal in your quest to master it. You might have taken up adventuring to acquire more funding and materials or to test your designs.

Choose two attribute boosts. One must be to Strength or Intelligence, and one is a free attribute boost. You’re trained in the Crafting skill and the Plane of Metal Lore skill. You gain the Specialty Crafting skill feat with the blacksmithing specialty.
. The strange armor she wore was certainly evocative of Cheliax, but there was no way that second mask was anything other than Magaambyan.

"Ummm.... is... is it okay?"

Not the most impressive opening line from this seeming Knight out of Hell. It was a somewhat awkwardly phrased question, she might have been asking if they were okay, she might have been asking if the situation was okay. Yet they were the first words she spoke. Thickly accented, there was little confidence in her Mwangi, as if she was worried about stumbling over the wrong words even more so than she already had. Her voice was as rough as the rest of her, but the voice that spoke them was at least mortal sounding. Deep, a little worried, and rather out of place.

Sweet Tooth cursed as her magic missed the bee, but it didn't matter long as the creature was brought down by her allies. She shook the wand a little, as if checking it was holding its charge ok. The fur on her arm stood on end as the wand releases a small amount of its power as static. She shook it again, and its sparking ceased. It was then that the hell knight appeared and the catfolk reared back. Her hair once again stood on end as she instictively tried to make herself look bigger. This would be a hell of a fight! She was reaching for some holy symbols to ward off the devil when she realised something about the knight was wrong. She took a step back as she spoke, and relaxed just a little. Her hand was still in her bag, holding some holy symbol, just in case.

"Who might you be? We were not expecting anyone else to follow!"

Banana rubs at his arm where the bee chomped down on it, kicking the twitching insect corpse aside.

"I would have prefered it dying before it tried to eat me, but at least it went down quickly."

He's about to say something else when he notices the newcomer. Her visage instantly sets his teeth into a vicious snarl.

"Shujaa wa kuzimu!"

With shocking speed for a creature so large, she was pushed against the wall, Banana's staff held close to her throat, ready to press down and start choking her.

"I won't let you conquer and enslave the Magaambaya, devil-praising mchawi! How did you get here? Where are the others? Tell me, before I start breaking bones!"

Sorena Ortho - Traitor to Cheliaximage.png.73e99a978c4b7df994947632c26cbd7a.png

Sorena might very well have matched the Gnoll’s strength, had she been prepared. She was shorter by almost a full head, but that was were the size differences ended. She was big, broad of shoulder and back, though it was difficult to tell how much of her bulk was her and how much of it was the half rotted armor she was wrapped up in. It didn’t matter though, because her reaction time was much slower than Banana’s. She’d been driven up against the wall before she could even so much as sputter, staring up into his barking snout with eyes wide. She held no weapon, and though the Gnoll was likely too close to notice, the others could see that she had none visible on her either. Not even a knife, let alone a sword or ax. Was there smoke emerging from the joints of her mail?

“I got here the same as you.”

She was not an eloquent speaker at the best of times, but Banana had unknowingly touched on something that set her mouth to motion. He could not have known it, but his threat had touched on a deep wound within her psyche. He had labeled her an outsider, a threat, someone who didn’t belong within Magaambaya. Someone who had not earned their place among the Attendants of the halls above them. Ambition and pride filled her words with confidence, a confidence that wouldn’t otherwise have existed. Where before she’d been stumbling over her own tongue, now she spoke with passion.

“Teacher Ot asked me too.”

At first, it might have appeared that she’d taken the beautiful winged mask off some hapless and helpless student she’d murdered and strapped it to her own Signifier’s mask. There was a cold logic to it, as it might provide her a flimsy cover story should she be discovered. Yet if Banana chose to look closely, he might have seen that such could never have been the case. The seams where the ruined Signifier’s mask and the Emperor Bird’s wing met were too perfect, a match that could only have been made via magic.

Via attunement.

Some among them might even have recalled seeing the strange Chelaxian woman sitting in the halls above during the first masking ceremony, though she’d been in the back, and had not been clad in the rusted armor she now wore. At the time, she’d been wearing only studded leathers, well worn from the long journey, though the slagged Signifier’s mask had still been on her face. She’d had a crude half helm on at the time to obscure the rest of her features, though this she appeared to have abandoned and replaced with the beautiful mask she now wore.

"Banana!" What do you think you're doing?" Omolara snapped. "Release her. She's obviously a student here." The attack had been a surprise since the big gnoll was generally quite easygoing. Something to investigate later. In the meantime, there were angry giant insects to consider.

Addressing her words to the stranger, she continued. "Teacher Ot sent you? Do you bring a message?"

Banana's grip on the Chelish girl's shoulder tightens for a moment. Alongside the snarling of those bone-crunching teeth and the furrowed brow, there's something that doesn't match his sudden display of aggression.

Tears. Stalwart Banana is visibly crying.

Continuing to grit his teeth, he pulls back his staff and releases his grip on Sorena.

"I'd just...please...when you get the chance, get rid of that mask you have under the Magaambaya one. Those who've had any dealing with those northerners might not care if Teacher Ot's welcomed you. They may be too afraid to raise hand against you, but they'll surely thing U'nee Ot mad or a fool for welcoming one of Them into Our ranks."

The rest of the cohort would quickly recognize the emphasis he's putting on his words. Them, with a capital T. Not merely an outsider, but an existential threat. Whatever that Signifier mask means to anyone else, it's clear that it means nothing but danger and misery to Banana. He steps away, taking heavy breaths to re-center himself, while Trouble scrambles onto his shoulders to rub behind his ears comfortingly.

As his grip tightened on Sorena's mail, Banana would have felt the iron start to flake off and crumble, shards of it falling to the ground. She didn't seem to pay it any mind, or at least it was low on her list of concerns. Instead, she seemed focused on the Gnoll's face. Looking up into the snarling maw, she was perfectly positioned to see his tears.

“Galtian then.”

It was a wrong guess, but she didn't know that, and Galt was the only place she knew of that had Hyenafolk. She knew nothing the Kholo, or how a tribe so far South might have encountered her people.

"Which campaign..."

She started to say "did you lose them too," but then stopped when she realized that she herself was unlearned in the lore of her nation's conflicts. She assumed the Gnoll had lost kin to her nation's soldiers, but wouldn't recognize the name of the campaign if he said it. She'd learned of metals and alloys from Franz, Devils from the tome she had stolen, and the basics of magic from Ekul. Outside of those three subjects, she knew so little of the world. That was why she was here, to become learned where instead she'd been ignorant.

"I... can't."

She said instead, changing the subject. She turned her head to the side, revealing what should have been a sliver of pale Chelish neck. Instead, it revealed angry red flesh where the slagged iron met her skin.

Had she been...

Had she been wearing the mask when it was burned?

Sweet Tooth was confused by the interaction. She didn't know Banana's past with Cheliax. Hadn't his family been at the mask ceremony? It didn't matter now, if the teacher had sent this strange creature to help them, then they could use the help.

"That giant insect will be back any minute! Lower your hackles, and you can deal with this newcomer after we have cleared out this nest. We need all the help we can get."

She released her grip on the holy symbol and instead prepared to renew their 'hunt'.

"I am Sweet Tooth, you didn't tell us your name, rusty one. How do you fight, from the front or the back?"

Taking down the single giant bee wasn't much of a challenge, too bad Banana got injured though. But just as Mac tries to get his bearings, he gets distracted by a new arrival. At first, he is a bit wary of the armoured figure, trying to remember if he has seen that one before maybe? Although, to be honest, struggling with his magical studies as he is, he may simply not have noticed a new student arriving. If this one is a new student.

Of course, when Banana immediately lashes out and attacks the newcomer, Mac is alarmed to say the least. Ready to rush to his friend's aid in defeating the interloper, Mac manages to get closer but one step before the figure declares to have been sent by Teacher Ot. A friend then?

"Banana! Chill! If Teacher Ot sent them they are cool! So... what gives?! Do you know that guy? And Sweet Tooth is right, we have giant bees down here, and I bet next time it won't be just two of them either. So, uh, peace for now? Pretty please?"

Having no idea what a Hellknight even is or how to deal with Banana's outburst of emotion, Mac just stands there, feeling quite miserable about his friend being obviously distressed, but even more so about having no idea how to help things get better.

He'd rather fight bees...

She turned back to face the others, her chin held high as she said her name.

“Sorena Ortho, Attendant of Magaambaya.

She did not speak of her Chelish heritage, only reiterated her right to be there. Reaffirming that she had earned her place among the other Attendants, and was worthy to study at the school. It had cost her so much to be here, she would let no one deny her now. The Gnoll already knew what she was. If he wanted to share the history of her people with the others, he could. She would not contest if he spoke of the devastation wrought by their war cam...

"I'm sorry, Banana?"

She was very familiar with that word, having been introduced to the strange fruit on her first day in the jungles. They were remarkable, and strange, and she had taken a strong liking to them. The name was distinctive enough that she was sure she wasn't hearing it wrong, despite how new she was to this tongue.
