Warriors

The warrior is not pushed back by Gaius's pulse, and he heedlessly rushes at Cufwell with his greatsword swinging:

Greatsword (atk;dmg)

The other "warrior" spreads his great draconic wings wide and roars. With has jaws wide open, a burst of purplish energy explodes from his maw. The dragon lunges forward (5ft step) and thrashes his head back and forth, wielding his breath weapon like a great blade.

((Yes, I gave it a breath weapon, even though it's a polymorph effect. Purple dragons have a special breath weapon that lets them wield it like a sword. It only deals half damage in this form, but the dragon gets iterative attacks with it, in addition to its secondary natural attacks. The breath blade attacks are melee touch attacks.))

Cufwell Greenskin

Statblock

AC 29 (Touch 16 FF 24)

HP -40ish/270

Cufwell takes the huge greenskin down quickly, but watches in horror as his death throes take down Tanu; "No!" he roars, "What have you done?"

He watches the warrior change form to a dragon and calls out to the world at large;

"You should know by now I am not scared by that!"

His eyes glaze over as he begins to succumb to the murderous rage he holds in check most of the time, the sight of his fallen friend and the threat to the others too great for him to maintain control.

However, the dragon-man is too quick and Cufwell's body slumps to the floor pouring blood from multiple, deeps wounds; he reaches towards his best friend as the light fades from his eyes.

Terry fights back against the dragon that thought it could stand before him, trading blow for blow with the polymorphed man.

Dragon vs Terry

((2 hits. Unfortunately, its grapple modifier is higher than +44, so those grapples won't succeed. 89 damage, though.))

Terry attempts to intercede and draw the dragon's attention away from Cufwell, but the dragon seems pretty determined to get those hits in. Even as Terry retaliates and shreds into the dragon with his claws, the dragon cuts Cufwell down. And unlike every other time you've seen a friend and companion die, this time, Cufwell's body stays in place, laying on the ground in a pool of blood, just a few paces away from the body of Tanu.

Dragon 443/532 hp

As Cufwell's last breath escapes his lips, there's a strange pulse of magic that washes over the battlefield. The whole landscape roils and buckles, trees topple and the sky seems to flicker. There's a strange feeling of anguish that fills the sky. The dragon briefly shifts back into the form of the hapless humanoid adventurer, and the alien color in his eyes drains away. He looks around in panicked confusion for a moment.

You hear a single voice whisper, but it reverberates around the demiplane: "Cufwell Greenskin!"

Then, with the determined roar of a man pushing through an incredible mental barrier, the world asserts itself again: the sky reforms over the broken landscape, the man shifts painfully back into his dragon form and howls a draconic howl of pain and anger, and refocuses its angry eyes on Terry.

Cufwell

This isn't the first time Cufwell has died. As a seasoned Tavern adventurer, Cufwell is accustomed to the weird, cosmic vertigo of soul and body separating. However, in most cases, his soul was immediately pulled into a functional copy of his body, seated at the Realm Folded Tavern. This time, he just remains suspended in that vertigo, with silver lights and swirling colors all around him. He can tell that his soul is suspended in some kind of limbo between destinations, with the inescapable tingling in the back of his mind telling him that he's supposed to scooting off somewhere else. And yet, he's not scooting.

Suddenly, something forces its way into his mind, and there's a sharp pain. He's never had the sensation of a wedge being used to split his skull apart, but he imagines that this is what it feels like. But the pain is more than just pain: it's some kind of message, some kind of attempt at communication. Cufwell gets the feeling that someone is trying to control him, to take his mind away from him. It's asserting ownership over him.

The voice becomes semi-coherent, but it seems to split into many copies of itself, all talking over each other and saying strange things:

"You're mine!" it says, "You're mine! I own you! Did you read the fine print!? Mine! You're finished! It's over for you! I told you not to do it! Why didn't you listen!"

Each voice sounds like the Barkeeper's voice, but strained and rabid, and delivered at a variety of different volumes and intensities, like some of them are nearby, while others are farther way. And each word hurts like another blade pressing further into Cufwell's skull. "You should have listened! Don't you understand! You've ruined everything! I won't let this happen! This wasn't meant to be! You can't have it! I OWN you!! Read the fine print!"

Though it all, Cufwell hears the sound of a distant dog barking. And across the swirling distance of weird magic in this cosmic no-man's-land, he sees Tanu, desperately trying to run to his side, but unable to make any progress.

"This is the end! How could you do this!?"

Then, another voice cuts in, soft as a whisper, but crystal clear in Cufwell's ears:

"So, that's the answer then?" Ukumalei says, "I understand now. Hold on, Cufwell!"

Meanwhile, back on the Demiplane

As the animated tree crashes to the ground around her, Naomi looks across the battlefield, just in time to see Cufwell fall to the onslaught of a great dragon. Then, she hears Ukumalei's voice in her head: "Take care of him, Naomi" she says, "I have other things that require my attention." @paladinred

In the cave, Oswald's spells and infusions continue to bolster him, and he looks over as magic begins swirling from elemental weird. She flings it across the room with a word of power, and the rubble of the Forge of Xhosfar lifts and turns about in the air. Stone restitches to stone, and coals are scooped from the ground and deposited back in the basin. A final chiming sound, and the brief flash of a rune on the stone, and the Forge of Xhosfar is reformed, sliding neatly back into its place on the grotto floor. The coals in the basin flare back to life. "Hurry, Oswald! We still need that Scythe!"

Terry and Jarren also hear Ukumalei's whispers in their ears. "Hold steady: you need to give Oswald the time he needs. Stop that dragon!"

There was a voice in his head.

He hadn't felt one in years, but there it was.

It felt ... warm. Not familiar, but certainly not aggressive.

But it made such an odd request. Only that he should 'stop' that dragon. But Terry didn't do things in half-measures, he would meet this fake dragon head-on, and make this day one that this man, polymorphed against his will or not, one he could never forget.

Crunch

Huh. mislabeled that third counter, should've been countering the claw, not a third breath he didn't take (and didn't include a counter-wing or counter-tail, but missed opportunity and all that).

Anyhow. Now it's Terry's turn to FRA.

Might as well call it out too, pull out all the stops, Doom: Will save DC 32 or be shaken for 1 round. Failing the save by 10 or more leaves the creature panicked.

.... Also, in case that dragon decides to attempt to grapple him because of it's grapple mod.... he's got FoM via ring.

edit: ... three crits (and one being the *big* bite). I guess the diceroller listened and melted that bad die.

(and he's absolutely maxed out his Destroyer bonus for next round, that's for certain)

Terry vs Dragon

((You were way overdue for some good rolls. I guess you've just been storing them up all this time?))

Terry crashes into the dragon, slashing and chomping and stabbing viciously. Dark, draconic blood sprays everywhere.

Dragon 200/532 hp

Will vs Fear (nope)

For a second, the dragon's eyes clear, and you see in them the human who was transformed into this beast. A sort of feral anxiety shows through, and the dragon shrinks back a little bit, snarling.

Jarren Grayson, the Nightshade

image.jpeg.7ee722c41543eea6cfe96701d4f48ece.jpeg

"Cufwell! Tanu! NO!" Nightshade cried, seeing his friends be laid low by the dragon. A look of despair crossed his face, unable to drag his gaze from the brave knight and his most faithful companion. Tears began to sting his eyes, and he bowed his head after a moment.

Hearing the voice of Ukumalei in his head drew his attention away from his bout of grief. There was still hope in their battle. All he had to do was hold on a little longer. Death was closing in on them, but the assassin was prepared to face it head-on. "Father, brother... I will see you soon."

With that, he grasped his blades and plunged back into the fray, attempting to swiftly lay low the warrior who stood above Cufwell's body. The least he can do is protect what remains of his friend, to the bitter end if need be.

Oswald Magismith, the Magical Artisan

The coin Oswald retrieved a moment ago while casting his spell was not just to illustrate his point. He cups the coin in his hand before opening his hands, the coin suspended in the air between them with arcane glyphs swirling around it. With his expertise and abilities in mere moments Oswald rapidly writes out the glyphs needed for the next spell, slamming his hands shut around the coin to infuse them into the coin. "Almost ready."

Actions: Rapid Infusion feat to use the Spell Storing Item as a 3rd level infusion to turn the coin into a makeshift scroll of Magecraft, at the cost of 13 XP.

Thorn will continue to move closer to Oswald, to BJ-30. Gaius will move just behind where Cuffwell fell and attack the enemy fighter.

One more round of preparation for Oswald. Outside, his constructs move to guard Cufwell's limp body and help in the fight against the dragon.

Demiplane

The demiplane seems to be cracking again, and you can practically feel the Barkeeper's desperation as he focuses his magic directly around you. "Cufwell's soul is mine now! I can use him! I will succeed! Everything can back to normal after this. Everything except... YOU!"

Healing energy rains down on the dragon, and it regains 150 hp.

Around you, the land starts trembling and rumbling.

Ukumalei's voice apparates in Naomi's mind: "Don't listen to him, Naomi: he hasn't succeeded yet. Bring Cufwell back! Oswald is almost ready: we just have to hold on for a few more seconds." ( @paladinred )

Naomi

Naomi rushes towards Cufwell's body and drops to her knees, preparing to cast her spell. She feels some extra magic waft her way from Ukumalei's direction, and her spell is quickened.

There's something odd in the magic, though. It's almost as if something exterior to her is resisting her. "Not like this!" the Barkeeper's increasingly deranged voice says, "It won't work! This won't end well! You can't do this!"

Cufwell

In this weird between space, Cufwell feels the magic of Naomi's spell reaching out to take hold of him. He also feels the magic of the Tavern working hard to keep him right where he is. It's almost as if the Barkeeper has some kind of claim on Cufwell's soul... or, somehow Cufwell's soul has become intertwined with the Tavern. The Tavern is... dependent on his soul now?

The magic of the resurrection spell is beckoning him back to the land of the living.

The magic of the Tavern is trying to get him to stay.

He hears Ukumalei whisper to him: "You have choice to make, Cufwell."

"Cufwell, think it through!" the Barkeeper's voice says, "Don't do this! Don't leave me! We can go back to the way things used to be! Your soul is forever bound to the Tavern now: this is where it belongs! If you rise from the dead now, without using the Tavern's magic, things can never be the way they used to be! Not for you, or for me. You'll throw it all away! Remember all the times we've had together at the Tavern? All the enemies we've overcome and victories we've won? Together? All of that will have been for nothing!"

Ukumalei speaks again: "It's your choice, Cufwell: what do you want? He's not telling you the whole story. He realizes he made a mistake, and now the Tavern is dependent upon you, upon your soul. You are the first Tavern adventurer to reach the final milestone, and his arrangement didn't account for this. It may destroy him."

"That's not true, Cufwell! I've always been good to you, haven't I? But now I need you! Think of the good the Tavern does for the Multiverse! Only I know how to operate it! Only I can continue it forward! If you join me, I can keep it stabilized for all these other adventurers, forever!"

"I think Rhaelira knows another way, Cufwell. The omens are not clear, but I think she does. But it's your choice: you can give up your soul to the Tavern, and it will return to what it used to be. This all may happen again, the next time an adventurer reaches your level of cultivation. Or, you can answer Naomi's call, break the Barkeeper's influence, and we can look for another way to save the Tavern. What's your choice, Cufwell?"

"Yes, choose! Choose me, Cufwell! Save me!"

(( @Delia2531, what's Cufwell's choice? Lose your soul to save the Barkeeper and spare the Tavern temporarily? Or return to life to help your companions, potentially ending the Barkeeper, then hope that Rhaelira's secret shows another way to save the Tavern more permanently?))

(( @DragonFriend, if you're doing the big roll this round, take a +2 (Aid Another) from Ukumalei.))

Dragon

The dragon seems to be going feral. Its resolve bolstered by the healing spell, it launches itself wholeheartedly at Terry.

Cufwell floats in the void, as is suspended in warm soup, Tanu floats nearby watching him intently as if she understands the voice just as clearly as he does; What do you think girl? We've trusted Rhiannon to get this far; I think we have to trust her entirely?! Unsure how to solve his immediate problem, this is way beyond his understanding of the world and the planes, he simply calls out;

"I came to the Tavern of my own free will, I've worked for the Tavern of my own free will, I am not of the Tavern nor the Tavern of me. My soul is mine, and mine alone; I will act of my own free will. Oswald, Jarren, do what needs to be done! We act with the best of intentions and the best for the Tavern at heart; if we are wrong then may the gods forgive us and our corpses be buried well!"
