Defending the Weird Cave

The Party

(( @paladinred, okay. I'll adjust your movement. The tree will get an attack of opportunity on you.))

Naomi rushes at the tree, which attempts to swing one of its large branches at her.

Slam AoO

Cufwell arrives on the scene and immediately cuts down one of the spellcasters. Tanu also savages one of the spellcasters.

Terry rushes to plug the new whole the Barkeeper's magic dug into the hillside, jamming his tail through the tunnel.

Inside the grotto, Oswald casts a wall of force spell for one last line of defense. ((I've included a second map image to give you an idea of the layout inside the grotto. That map may be missing some things, but the layout is essentially correct.))

Demiplane

As Terry shifts to the newly-dug entrance to the grotto, the tree decides to just step right over Naomi and start excavating the main entrance. As it does, the sleet storm spell around the mouth of the cave disappears (apparently dispelled by the Barkeeper?). It grabs one of the large boulders and hurls it at Terry:

Thrown Stone

The storm of vengeance also continues raging all around. Electricity builds up inside the clouds and surges downwards as a bunch of lightning bolts:

After the lightning scorches the ground, there's another cracking sound and a flash of light as a teleport spell ends, and a massive, green-skinned ogre wielding an oversized maul appears at the mouth of the cave. You all recognize Grugurg, the bard-turned-warhulk. His eyes aglow with the Barkeeper's mind-controlling magic, the enthralled Grugurg roars a battle cry at the stones in front of him.

Grugurg's Initiative

Expert Thralls

The two archers balk as Terry appears to block their way into the grotto. Hesitating for a moment, they both back away and turn to go around him, preferring to head towards the main entrance instead. ((The closest one to you used the Withdraw action, so you won't get an AoO)).

OoC

We don't have an ooc thread, should we make one? And now that I see the inside-cave map I have a backup plan in case we can't keep blocking them. It does require Naomi to move west to not potentially get caught in it. I *think* 5 squares should be enough. Storm of Vengeance is only one bolt per target (although I agree, larger targets should be targetable by more bolts)? Does it count as '...any ranged attack (including but not limited to breath weapons, orbs, fireballs and the such) coming from more than 30 foot away from it'? I'm inclined to say no, which is 51 after resistance, or ... 17 after doubling if yes. I'm just going to go with no. 9th level spells need some oomph DC 40 dex seems... rather high? Wouldn't it be 25 like the Fort save was?

Edit: and now that I added rolls, and managed to get a 25, it seems like a self-serving ask >.<

And I haven't been sheet-rolling/manually typing the rolls (I don't even know if it uses the same roll structure), I've just been using the... 'wizard' I guess they call it. So far it's worked. Except for the week it didn't. But that was a couple months ago now.

OOC: @Blue Jay - why don't we put that 'spare' bolt on Tanu? It seems odd that she'd be spared?

 

Here with ref saves for them both; Cufwell has Improved evasion so half damage on a fail and no damage on a success. Tanu has regular Evasion and so no damage on a success.

Cufwell and Tanu

Even as his axes bite deeply in to the flesh of his foe, Cufwell's nimble movements keep him out of the way of the lighting flashing around him.

 

Tanu is not so fortunate; perhaps it is her metal armour, perhaps she is too focussed on her quarry, but a bolt hits her and sparks across her breastplate and greaves. When it subsides her fur is smoking in places and she is snarling fiercely.

OOC: Storm of Vengeance

Okay, we'll move the last bolt to Tanu. Maybe that's what I intended to do originally, but I mistyped it. So far, Cufwell and Terry succeeded on the saves, but Tanu and Naomi have failed. Still waiting on saves for Jarren ( @rogueblade0729 ) and Gaius ( @DragonFriend ).

Naomi

((Plant creatures are immune to critical hits, so I'm just taking the first 2 dice from your critical damage roll +7 for Str.))

Naomi slashes and hacks at the tree's trunk, carving into the bark. The tree seems dead set on that cave entrance, however.

Gitcha

Gitcha's eyes flick back and forth for a moment, watching as the other thralls hurry towards the main entrance. A look of resignation seems to come over Gitcha's insectoid face as he sets his sights on Terry and leaps at him, kukris swinging (Power Attack -2/+2):

Defending the Weird Cave

Warrior Thralls

One of the three warriors decides to turn and run towards the cave entrance, while the other two remain behind to fight with Oswald's constructs. One take sa five-foot step north (to get out of flanking) and swings his greatsword at Gaius. The other swings his sword at Thorn. (Both are using Power Attack for -2/+4):

The spellcaster near Terry likewise pivots to rush around him, towards the cave entrance, and reaches back to cast impeding stones over Terry's area. The earth beneath Terry's feet begins shifting and rolling about.

  • Roll Ref DC 15 or fall prone. You have to repeat the save each round on the spellcaster's turn. You can choose to roll Balance instead of Reflex
  • In the area of the spell, you move at only half speed.
  • Concentration DC 15 + spell level to cast a spell.
  • All attacks from within the area of effect at are -2 to the attack roll.

The other spellcaster takes a 5-ft step back away Tanu and casts scorching ray (both rays at Tanu):

Since the warrior missed a melee attack against Gaius, Gaius will use his Force Reactive ability to push the warrior down 5ft as an immediate action, bringing him back into flanking. There is no save or way to resist this movement.

Thorn and Gaius fail to evade the attacks against them, but continue to attempt to hold the line, repeating what they did only moments ago.

Terry's temporarily nimble feet were... Surprisingly even more nimble now.

Never seen/heard of that spell before. But .... That just feels rather absurdly op. It's like grease. On steroids. And some extra.

And it's flat duration!

Does Freedom of Movement allow full speed movement (without balance check, maybe?) It'd be so much simpler if they explained via grease, the super common movement impairing spell.

(As far as I can tell, it would be ref to not fall, then maybe a balance check, but fullspeed movement as long as you don't fall from the balance check. ... I think.)

Cufwell watches Tanu trading blows with the magician; she'll be fine, I need to get to the cave! and he sets off at a dead run weaving between the foes along the way to get close to Terry and the entrance.

Cufwell is AC 31 = 29 +4 (skirmish) -2 running

Attacks against Cufwell are +4/+4 (attack/damage) but attract an AoO (of which he has 5/round thanks to Combat Reflexes).

Tanu is 5FS to re-engage and then FRA against the mage. Trip attempt on a successful attack, if that's the first attack then target is prone for second attack.

Well, the site is preventing my phone from doing anything other than next/previous buttons now. Can't open the menu, let alone look at alerts, can't post, can't open tags, can't even add a roll to a post... anyhow.

Did Gitcha have a method of avoiding OAs from Terry while approaching? I recall somewhat how it's a pounce-based character, but I don't recall many of the details, I just had the thought as it's 3 squares he'd have to leave while within reach and most anti-reach abilities I recall are only 10'. But it's also a build I've never attempted (let alone optimized), and I'm tiiiired, so just saying the wonder-thought.
As for the one crit, hmm, maybe I will have to break out the Counter anyways then, since that's 24 damage he can't regenerate...
Knew I shoulda sprung for some Fortification. 42 damage marked. at least that's +4 for his check on his upcoming turn.

Unrelated .... hopefully: has anybody else gotten a 'Error logging in to sheets system' every single time you look at your browser with a sheet on a tab -- even if that's not the tab you're on (aka leave a tab open with a sheet, go do something else long enough for it to drop background processes, then go back to browser, even before going to the sheet's tab), or is that just me?

((OOC: No, Gitcha doesn't have a way to avoid AoOs, so go ahead and take one.

I don't know about the specific error you had, but I've had plenty of situations where navigation to character sheets doesn't work the first time I click on it (it sends me to the page that lists all my character sheets). Usually, if I go back and click again, it goes through.))

Defending the Weird Cave

Oswald & Crew

Oswald's hammer rings, pounding the scythe into shape around the gemstone.

((2 of 3 successes.))

Gaius takes a bolt of lightning hard, with electricity surging over his body.

The unsuspecting warrior is pulled back into place for Gaius to make another pair of solid attacks, both of which hit the man in his stomach.

The Party

Tanu tears the spellcaster down while Cufwell runs on ahead.

((I'll go ahead and post an action for Jarren. He'll double-move towards the main battle.))

Jarren Ref vs Lightning

((Jarren also easily avoids taking electricity damage from that bolt of lightning.))

Grugurg

The half-orc at the doorway roars an angry roar (somewhat uncharacteristic of him, for those who know him). He grabs one of the great stones blocking the door and hurls it in Cufwell's direction.

Rock Throw (this includes +4 from Cufwell's post, and Power Attack -5/+10)

Cufwell ducks beneath the massive boulder, and Grugurg growls in frustration as he goes back for another boulder.

Rock Throw

The second stone slams into Cufwell's shoulder and chest, nearly knocking him back. Cufwell is able to pivot slightly to avoid being completely smashed.
