Rosalee answers Strunthal "we do not have anything better than what we are wearing now without going to our quarters, they are on this floor to the southeast corner. We should be ok though as we have some of the tea that keeps us warm, I am sure that the ship will have some spare coats" she said. Rosalee then spoke of the stairs "we have only one set of stairs here, they are the central ones" and she pointed to the central room.

Finn is done with a manicure and stores away the weapon before ungluing from the wall "There are one or two words that describe sending away our only mode of travel full of people we just met, and crossing our fingers it will return really, really hard. But since I'm a gentleman, and there are women and children around let's use "unpractical" for now. Not to besmirch anyone's character, but as a hypothetical, we'll say that we actually have no idea these are only survivors. I'd hate in 45 minutes to be a guy to tell the guy with the chomped-off foot that he'll need to wait for a spell, because we are proud "first come, first serve saviors" not those pathetic "try to save as many as possible saviors." Ptuh!! Pox on their seed."

Sarcasm vanishes from his voice as he looks at the rest of his companions "Think. We have one vessel. One. That's a number of mistakes we can make with it in this climate. We traveled the entire day and got here at dusk. Meaning it is one trip a day and it is already dark outside. Boatman are not our slaves, or undead servants, I was under the impression their lives count too. Sending them with a boat full of women and children into the pitch black...It's tantamount to homicide. If it gets cloudy for half an hour, so they can't see the stars to orient themselves, they can drift toward the ocean. If they move closer to the coast, so they can see the land, shallows or errant waves can crush the boat and everyone in it. This is not prison island for nothing."

He looks at eight survivors "We heal them, make them as comfortable as possible, Miss Rosalee is a trained fencer with a magic sword, that she will present to me now so I can inspect it." Blue light dances along his hand as he meets the woman's eyes "She'll present it slowly. And I'm sure we can get some weapons from guard remains for the other adults. Then they do as I said when I knocked, lock themselves up. They survived this long, they will survive another hour until we make sure this floor is clear. Now when we know trouble comes from upstairs, all we need to do is block those three doors that lead from the room with the stairs, and nothing will break in without us hearing and being on it before it leaves the second room let alone come here. When we're certain everyone on this floor is dead or saved, we can hug them to death and wait 'till morning to gift them our lifeline. Because the same math works for us, once that boat is gone we're not seeing it for another day. If at all."

He pays full attention to Rosalee now and his voice slightly mellows "I apologize, nothing personal. Present me the sword, the blade only is fine. So what Margot does do around here and why does she think there are secret doors? Have you ever heard about any?"

Rosalee stares at Finn with a look of disbelief "why do you want my sword? is night or morning?

The woman looks to the other party members to see if they approve of this bully taking the only weapon that has kept them alive, she draws the weapon and hands it to Finn grip first.

Amyly steps next to Finn and asks "can you tell me why you need the sword? if there is something specific with it then ok. Will you be giving it back to her" she asks him?

Finn first answers Rosalee "It was dusk when we arrived, we did some exploring, then we fought dogs, then we did some exploring, then we found you. I would say it is pretty dark now outside, it will be very dark by the time you are halfway from anywhere dry, and very wet, I assume "very cold too" is redundant. As for the sword, I thought it was obvious I was gonna steal it and sell it on the black market."

He sighs "I'm sorry, my patron is... impatient tonight. I didn't say: "Give me your sword." I said: "Present me your sword." I assumed trained fencers would know the difference. But it was a long day, we'll work with what we have." Finn goes with his hand carefully over the weapon, very strictly holding a certain distance from the blade of the sword allowing his magic detection and training to work together (OOC: Already rolled above)

Then his honey-colored eyes look at Amyly slightly warmer "Nothing special really, just checking the enchantment, you picked up at least 4 "magic" things so far, so you should know how broad definition that is. I just want to check that there is no some ill effect to prolonged exposure to it. If they will stay locked with it, it would be certainly nice if we knew it's not "Gharmogand The Blooddrinker" made of Tiamat's broken scale. That drives its wielder in blood-frenzy in which they kill anything in sight after three days...Well, that one I actually would steal, sell it to some tyrant, and live as the king, but that is beside the point. Just precaution we're not locking them in with some bad mojo, in a small room full of children."

OOC: I also rolled Sense Motive to check how trustworthy Rosalee is, I knew that fact rolls are so low will present a problem in long posts. They are impossible to see. (Spellcraft is rolled 25, with active Detect Magic, Sense Motive roll is 19)

Strunthal is shocked, once again, by the foul things coming out of Finn's mouth and his attitude.

I am speaking for myself, but I have no problem with taking these women and children to the boat and risking losing our way off the island for a while if the crew feels safe enough taking them back in the dark. At the very least they can be safe on the boat and the crew can pull out into the water far enough so that nothing can get them while they wait for us. Then we can go on with our exploration without having to worry about them anymore.

Startled by Finn's salty demeanor, Devon steps up next to Strunthal and gives Finn a wary look. "I believe a compromise would be best in this situation." He looks back to Rosalee and tries to speak in a reasonable tone of voice. "It's a bright brisk day out there right now. We can escort all of you to the lift, take it down to the boat, and have it ferry you to the ship that's just offshore." Devon then hesitates, unsure how to broach the next subject. "I would like to ask if we could use that sword as well. You can pick a replacement from the guard room as we pass it, and you wouldn't have to relinquish it until you were on the boat, heading to the safety of the ship. You won't have need for it once you are out there, and as we don't have any magical weapons, it may greatly help our attempts to deal with this problem. If you don't want to, I understand. We won't make you." At this, he gives Finn another wary look, hoping someone won't prove otherwise.

Rosalee regains a little faith and replies to Devon "oh, I see. In that case, I will loan you the sword. It has kept us alive and we are so glad that we have it, so it is daylight yes? If the ship has cabins then we are happy to await your explorations, please escort us to the lift" she asks.

With the sword resolved the women are led to the key lift and a signal is made to the ship, a little while later a rowboat is seen and arrives just a few minutes later. The survivors get aboard and are then ferried across to the ship, the party head back inside.

Where next?

The sword is a +1 longsword

Sense Motive needed 20 to get the info but I will say that Finn did not feel that she was lying or trying to hide anything, they have been to hell and back so were a little reluctant to let go of it is all.

There is a familiar pressure at the back of Warlock's mind and soon a whisper is there too "Soft, squishy, and dumb. Just spin that sword they are forcing upon you and make a Dwarf shorter for a head. Devon is watching you so shoot an Eldrich Blast in his eyes, then..." Finn grinds his teeth "You ate already and will plenty soon come, remember the pact. No friends, no family, no companions." The voice gets an acrid tone "Some companions. They don't trust or like you." Finn remembers his master's teachings and arcane force stabs in his brain making voice hiss with anger "Inconsequential, until they threaten my life they are companions. Be gone and wait for the next meal." During the ordeal, his face doesn't show emotion but slight perspiration shows on his face.

Satisfied that both sword and woman can be trusted. Well, woman as far as his capabilities carry, he just tsks and raises his arms seeing them take the sword, after he told them two or three times they don't need it, and just hoped someone can use it. At this point, he didn't even try to question the black-haired woman about the secret doors. This gaggle of do-gooders would think he plans a blood sacrifice. Finn moves away letting proceedings continue mentally recuperating from the "chat" with his patron. At Strunthal he just gives a half smile "I'm sure you could do much Master Strunthal, I would prefer you think more about should you do it."

He raises an eyebrow at Finn's response, not really sure what to make of it. So he just gives a simple response in a normal tone, not upset or anything just stating a fact.

I am no ones Master and no one is mine. If you would please, just call me Strunthal.

Now that they are safe shall we continue on to the next door?

Continuing his original plan he will move to the next door clockwise from where they were.

Finn smiles and nods drawing his rapier again, in the light the color of the long blade went from clearly black to black with some dark red mixed in. "Most Dwarfs I worked with dislike being addressed by their first name by someone they know for a day, but Strunthal it is." He points toward the next door with the tip of his sword and slightly bows "Master of finding the traps has the merit to lead I think."

Argent was glad to see the misunderstandings had been cleared up and the survivors safely on the boat. That was one less thing to worry about when exploring the fort. They had even gained a new weapon thanks to Devon's silver tongue. After the trouble those dogs had given them it was comforting to have another way to fight them.

The unicorn fell in at the rear of the group in their usual marching order as Strunthal and Finn moved to the next door. The plan of going clockwise was a good one as it meant they could eliminate each door one by one without missing any, keep the group together and not have to worry about anything sneaking up behind them.

"I think the survivors mentioned secret doors, didn't they? Better keep an eye out or we might find ourselves in an ambush." Taking his own advice, Argent scanned the stonework of the walls as he passed, looking for seams, scrapes or anything out of place which might indicate a hidden door.

Moving to the next door which is adjacent to the door they had just looked in, they find an open area which is carpeted and has 4 doors of which 3 are smashed in. There are 4 dead bodies around the area, they look like they were killed with bludgeoning weapons, the 3 doors are personal rooms for staff. There is another door at the bottom, getting to this door could you make Listening checks as well as Move Silently please?

Argent crept forward as stealthily as he was able, placing his claws and hooves carefully to make as little noise as possible. Meanwhile he tried to filter any sounds from beyond the door out of the background noise around him, straining his ears for a hint of what lay beyond and tried to discern if anything through there had the same scent as the dogs they had fought.

Finn's suggestion was a good one and the unicorn nodded to silently indicate his agreement before turning his horn on the only remaining door and trying to sense if there was anything malevolent beyond it.
