Yorp the Lantern-Bearer

With a suspicious glare at the magical (or maybe the dwarf's axe, despite its apparent skill at cleaving skulls is less proficient at wood?) crate, Yorp scurries over the other crates towards the northern door, holding his lantern high to shine though and illuminate what might be on the other side...

The north door leads to a narrow passage, ten feet wide by thirty feet long, that runs along the north side of the previous room. The dust here is just as thick, laying in mats on the floor and thick bands on the cobwebs that line the corners of the ceiling. There is a closed wooden door at the east end of the passage. On the north wall are hung two wooden shelves, held up with corbels. Atop the lower shelf is a dust-laden hat box tied shut with red string.

Stoyan Barakovsen

Stoyan levels his crossbow, "I'll guard while you search," he says to no-one in particular.

"I'm not too handy with searching, but if nobody else is willing to..." Astrid's voice trails off, and, not seeing anyone jumping to do said searching, begins to do so herself, being careful for anything that seems pressure-plate-y.

Tala Silvergrave

"Are we simply not remarking upon the hat box?" Tala arches an eyebrow as she gingerly steps into the room, following in Astrid's footsteps before breaking to the North towards the shelves in a slow step-pause-step cadence.

"Odd place for a trap, if 'tis one.  Mayhaps pull the box and the shelves fall?" half talking to herself she moves in a slow bobbing, angling weave around the shelves and the box, craning to try and get an eyeline on either where the box meets the shelves or the shelves meet the wall, trying to spot the telltale glint of metal wire.  "Odder place to leave a hat, if it isn't."

OOC

Tala is going to move to the shelves and examine the hatbox.  If there is no obvious trap she'll nudge it a few inches with her mace before pulling it off the shelf.

Stoyan Barakovsen

"I've heard of monsters that can disguise themselves as chests," Stoyan takes aim directly at the hat box, "Why not a hat box?"

Tala carefully looks over the hatbox and the shelf upon which it sits. There don't appear to be any wires or other connections, and the tentative nudge is met with little resistance other than the piling-up of dust on the far side. And so, setting aside her mace, she easily lifts the string-tied box off the shelf. It's quite light--not even a quarter of what her mace weighs.

Tala Silvergrave

Holding the box gingerly, like a fragile flower of some unstable alchemists potion, Tala stepped back quickly - backing away from the shelves and into the center of the room.  Moving as far from the walls and her companions as the space would allow, she set down her mace so as to manage the box with both hands before grimacing.

"I am tempted to say if 'tis an actual hat I'll eat it." She paused, thumbs going to the lid of the box.  "The hat I mean.  Because it would be my hat and it's a saying - " the joke died, was raised, and then murdered again as she tried to steady her hands inside the mail of her gauntlets.

"Goddess I hope it's a hat . . ."

Out of Character

Sorry for the delay: open the hatbox!

The box is tied tightly with bright red string, the color of which has been dulled somewhat by the layer of dust. Tala fights with it for a moment, her bulky gauntlets struggling to give enough mobility to untie the knot. Finally, she simply resorts to pulling hard enough to snap the line.

Inside is a faded but good-condition ladies' hat. A silvery-colored metal pin, fashioned in the shape of a bird, holds a spray of silk flowers in place. Despite the contents' overall appearance of age, the pin is untarnished.

Stoyan Barakovsen

"We have defeated this fierce monster," Stoyan scoffs, not caring for the hat or their heightened sense of worry over what it could have been, "Unless it is worth something, throw it away and let's be moving on."

"Yorp, be about your scouting, young scout. Let us find something worthy of our time."

Tala Silvergrave

"'Though it but be little, fashion be'st fierce - '" the half remembered quote comes out as a mumbled, under the breath retort, almost absentminded as Tala turned the hat in her hands.  Popping it on her head she discarded the box and took her place with Yorp by the Western door, the hat's flowers flouncing as she did so.

"Monster it might not be but it may well be coin, Master Stoyan.  Fashion moves in circles and what's old might be new - and gilded - again."

Out of Character

Moving to the western door to support Yorp if they're doing the listen/check for traps thing; will open the door if Yorp is disinclined to check or nothing appears to be found.

  • 3 months later...

Yorp opens the door to reveal a 30'x40' room. There is another doorway in the west wall and third aperture in the east wall; both of those doors are missing. The space appears to have once been a fine bedroom, but its rich furnishings--canopy bed, plush chairs, tables, and rugs--are now tattered, moldy, and worthless.
