Arradon clambers aboard the boat and heads for the front. He carefully perches on the bow seat and continues to survey ahead as the oxen are moved into position. "Read whenever." He ensures all of this gear is well-strapped and his daggers are readily accessible. He'd fought in water before. If he happened to get tossed from the boat, he wanted to be ready.

Day 9 Morning, In Brinestump Marsh

Barlo helped cajole the oxen with Lothar and Azgar while Casimir and Arradon boarded the boat to lead the crossing. The two were able to control the little boat easily enough, there was not a strong current.

But the two oxen balked as soon as their front hooves sank into the mud of the swamp channel, and they were up to their chests in the water while their rearends were still on the shore. They struggled another step and then turned parallel with the shore and scrambled out.

The three were starting to get mud splattered and Barlo commented, "Something more is needed to get them to cross. We can drive them into the water, but they don't want to cross."

Lothar doesn't seem to put out by this outcome. "Azgar and I are the only one's with animal skills and clearly we can't do it.", he says calmly. ""So, if it's not possible for us two, it's not possible for any of us. Also, we're moving into a position we'll have problems escaping from ourselves.", he adds, perhaps a little irritated after all, but if so keeping a firm lid on it.

"So, oxen stay here." he says with a tone of finality."I'll wait on the shore for the boat to come back. We'll all rendezvous on the other side."

Casimir watches from the boat as the oxen appear unwilling to cross the water. Handling livestock is not his area of expertise, but he attempts to assist regardless.

"Does anyone perhaps know whether there are any plants that grow in this marsh that the oxen might like to eat?" he calls out so that everyone on the shore can also hear, "If so, perhaps we could gather some, put it into a bundle and hold it out in front of them while we row across. That way they might follow and make the crossing willingly?"

It is obvious that he himself has no real depth of knowledge to offer in terms of either plants or the likely response of the oxen, but is merely trying to help.

Arradon nods at Lothar's logic. "If they can't be persuaded, they have to stay." In his mind, the oxen may present a problem later; however, they could cross that bridge when they came to it. "Let's secure the cargo, if any, and then deal with getting it back."

Barlo noted that the little boat was across without getting attacked by anything in the swamp water.

"Maybe we should block and tackle drag them across. I don't want to swim with them myself at least."

"But Casimir's idea could work if we have some treats to entice them to the other side from that bank," he gestured to the other side of the water crossing.

Putting leads over the heads of the two oxen, Azgar slows walks them out into the water. He knows that oxen routinely swim across rivers when pulling cargo in remote areas. They just need a moment to remember that they know how to do this. . "Someone bring a boat around. Once they get comfortable with this water. I will climb aboard. We will slowly row across while leading them with the guide."

Arradon steadies the boat as Azgar attempts to coax the oxen across. He had no knowledge of plants or oxen. He wished he'd paid more attention to what they seemed drawn to on the journey. In any case, he hoped Azgar entering the water would be enough, but the stubborn oxen were proving most reluctant to proceed.

The below is predicated on Barlo's statement that Casimir and Arradon have managed to reach the opposite shore. Please correct me if I have misunderstood.

Casimir notes that between the actions of Arradon and himself, they have managed to reach the other side of the channel without being attacked, almost without noticing since they were so focused on the difficulties of getting the oxen across.

As they drift closer to the opposite shore, he carefully scans the shoreline for danger, then assuming all is clear, he inspects the vegetation hanging over the water for especially lush-looking leaves. If any such plants are present, he will attempt to cut off several branches with his knife, while remaining in the boat, to bring back across and hopefully entice the oxen to start swimming.

"A bit to starboard if you please, Master Arradon... and there we are! Hopefully this will do the job!"

With the additional help from Arradon and the ropes to guide and pull the reluctant oxen across the swamp water, the group was able to successfully manage the crossing with only Azgar getting wet and muddy. The oxen scrambled quickly up the opposite bank without needing any coaxing, happy to be out of the swampy muck.

Another trip with the small boat was all that was needed to ferry the rest of the group across to join them. All said and done, it only took 10 minutes. Nothing attacked them from the water, and there did not appear to be anyone or beast lurking around watching them.

Barlo nodded off to the west, "According to the map, the shipwreck is that way and maybe only a quarter of a mile. In this rough terrain, it should not take more than an hour. How are we going to proceed?"

Arradon carefully pulls the small boat onto shore, ensuring it isn't close enough to the water to accidentally float away. Satisfied, he turns to the discussion between Barlo and Lothar. "I can scout ahead of the group a number of paces. Give us an edge if there's anything waiting for us." He waits just slightly away from the others as the group settles the oxen and decides what to do next.
