Jessie Tosscobble III's AppearanceJessie is small standing at 2 foot 8 inches and weighing a mere 27 pounds. As such, the lass intentionally keeps her brown hair long to cover her halfling features, which allows the rogue to pass herself off as a small humanoid or even young human or half-elven child when convenient or necessary.

Dressed dark purple clothing, which is overlaid with attractive black leather accoutrements, Jessie keeps the paraphernalia of her 'profession' secreted upon her person, and especially the authorities, except when in use.

Her friendly blue eyes and warm, sincere smile are disarming and allow the lass to paint a picture of a young girl who is completely unintimidating by all appearances, an assumption often made by others which suits her well and which she actively cultivates.

To promote this look of youth or innocence, most of Jessie's weapons, alchemical doodads, pack, and other equipment are kept hidden under her clothing and also by her large heavy dark green cloak.

With another minute or so of fidgeting, Jesse manage to elicit a click from the ancient locking mechanism after which, Rodin and Aeruiel have no trouble using their combined strength to lift the grate enough for Jesse to escape or the rest of you to follow her into the passage.

Rodin helps lift the large grate out of the way, lifting it as high as he can.

Jessie, can you jam this thing so it stays up? Maybe in such a way that we can safely go under, but if we have to make a hasty retreat we can easily make it fall and either hit or stop our pursuers.

Anyone got any healing they can do for our valiant rogue?

As soon as the nasty spike grate is opened, Jessie limps through the opening and back to the rear ranks of the party where she stops to catch her breath. Battered and bloodied, the diminutive Halfling is covered in multiple cuts and contusions all over her tiny body and, by the way she looks, it's likely she might have several broken bones as well.

Gingerly pulling her small waterskin out of her pack, the nearly dead rogue leans to rest herself against a nearby cool stone wall while she rinses her mouth out and then spits the pinkish water to the floor to wash the blood out of her mouth before taking a drink and swallowing any of the warm, slightly leather-flavored liquid.

As she recovers slightly, the burglar says, "That was a close one! Yes, please, I could use some healing help," she adds while contemplating whether or not they could prop up the grate trap and use it to their advantage later by setting the trap to only work when they manually activate it, including marking the pressure plate assuming there is enough room to walk around it.

Rodin gives a few choice curses in elven.

Maybe we have bit off more than we can chew here? We now have tried getting down into the kobold lair twice and got our backsides handed to us both times. And we got bested by a couple of large bugs. At the very least we need to withdraw and rest up, ... AGAIN, ... and then try again. Worst case we should pack up and go home as this little venture appears to be something we can't handle. Both Jessie and I are in bad shape and most likely will not survive the next encounter without healing up first. We could always head back to town and try to find some reinforcements?

It is quite clear he is pissed off and is venting, but he does look to the others to see what their thoughts are.

Her ministrations complete, Kethra turns her attention to Rodin and sighs, grinning.

"Naed! Come now Rodin, what sort of adventurers would we be if we turned away every time danger threatened to overwhelm us? Tymora favors the bold and The Lady demands as much as she grants!

Asides, what of the riders Rossal mentioned? They may return and be gone by the time we travel to Glen and thence return here. If we musts rest, let us do so, but before, let me see what more aid I can render."

With that, Kethra draws a familiar wand and touches it to Jesse and Rodin in turn, uttering the Elven command to activate it as she does. Healing energies flow through you both, knitting wounds and invigorating you.

Allowing Rodin to take the first dose of healing from Kethra's magical wand, Jessie fully recovers from her massive injuries after her second dose of curative magic from the special crooked stick.

Smiling again and slightly bouncy after being healed, the diminutive Halfling says sincerely in a lowered voice, "Thank you Kethra. I thought I was a goner for a while there. I appreciate it."

Moving back toward the spiked gate, Jessie will again double-check the device to determine if there is an easy way to reset the trap and rig it so the party can drop the barrier into the locking position at will, of it they can use the pressure plate to accomplish the same goal from the backside of the gate.

After several minutes of examining the trap, Jesse finds to her frustration that its working are a bit beyond her current ken, due largely to the trap's age. It seems that resetting it would require rebuilding it, though perhaps given some time and creative thinking, the company might find an alternate way to rig it.

Note 1: Jesse cannot resent the trap, but I'm not above allowing it to be reused with some creative thinking if anyone wants to bother with ideas.

Thank you for the healing.

He takes a moment to think over their situation and calm down.

Okay, so is this just a dead end? Or do we need to go this way?

If we need to go that way, and someone has a piton or the like, we can push the grate back up into the ceiling and then jam the piton in there to keep the grate stuck in the up position. It seems strange to trap a dead end, so lets take a closer look at it and see if there is anything there.

He helps with jamming the grate open, if someone has something they can use to do it, if not will just help lift the grate out of the way so everyone can pass. Then he helps check the dead end for hidden doors or other reasons for the trap to be there.

After looking over the spiked gate trap, Jessie whispers, "I don't think I can reset the trap due to its age and complexity. However, I may have a solution we can use to jury-rig the device the way you wanted too anyway."

Pointing at the closed gate, the rogue says, "See how it's hinged to the ceiling to swing open and closed. Well, that part still works for sure. Also, notice how it swings towards the unexplored cave region when it closes, which is how it pushed me forward and trapped me on the other side."

"Well, assuming that you can drive pitons and secure a couple of metal loops close together from the cavern ceiling above the unhinged swinging end of this gate, then we should be able to control the trap. Also, I can make twisted wire loops if necessary."

"We would tie Aeruiel's rope to the unhinged end of the grate, run the rope through the loops on the ceiling and then, while the grate is held open, we would tie the rope off down the passageway leading out," she adds.

"Once we let the tension off the grate and it holds, then we can leave it open and, if we need to flee, we race through the trap and can cut the rope to drop the spiked grate shut in an instant."

"There is no guarantee it would lock again like it did the first time, but the sharp spikes and sheer force of its closing will at least slow down anything on our collective tail," the tiny burglar adds with first-hand personal knowledge of its danger.

"Plus, if we don't need to use it, we can return and recover the assets deployed, that is assuming we can secure loops above the trap," the tiny Halfling suggests and then quietly waits to see if Rodin or any of her colleagues can attach the essential loops to the ceiling or not.

OOC

Such metal loops/rings would be part of a climber's kit, belt attachments, armor, or even part of a pack.

If we don't have any metal loops/rings, then makeshift loops can be made out pieces of wire that she carries or even braided (for increased tensile strength) rawhide straps since we are not worried about slow water fatigue on the leather over time

Great idea, but unfortunately it appears none of us have any pitons and I have nothing else that can be used to try to jam the grate open. If we head back up top, we can find a thick sturdy branch and wedge that under it. Otherwise we are just going to have to lift it and hold it open while Jessie goes in and tries to figure out what about this dead end is worth trapping.

Though the grate is quite large, with some effort from Rodin and Aeruiel, you manage to lift it up and secure it in place with the help of Jesse's ironwood telescoping staff, at least for now. A brief investigation of the outline Jesse had noticed earlier reveals a stone door at the end of the passage, not quite concealed as naturally blending into the adjacent stone due to it's being stone itself. Having noticed no traps about the door, Jesse opens it. Stuck though it is, likely do to the passage of time, it gives way and reveals a gently sloping short passage behind it that ends in another small stone door, this one almost horizontal. This door too seems unlocked and not trapped. Opening it inward reveals a wall of thick briars punctuated ever so slightly by daylight where the briars are slightly less thick. It would appear this door once led outside.
