Ghosts Come Home to Roost?

After helping to prop open the grate trap with her collapsable ironwood pole, Jessie looks back over her shoulder at their jury-rigging somewhat loathe to leave the valuable tool behind.

Well, I hope I don't need a ten-foot pole where we're going, the rogue thinks to herself as she heads down the passageway with her colleagues and locates a secret door that leads to a second door which apparently to the outside, but it now closed off with briars.

"Looks like it was a secret way in and out of the fortress long ago when it was occupied which explains the grate trap, but now this way out is blocked by these thick prickly 'sticker' bushes," the rogue whispers.

"It's likely a dead-end that won't lead us to the Kobolds, but just out of curiosity, does anyone remember seeing a clump of briars around the ruins," she asks in the same hushed tone?

Nonetheless, the Halfling burglar takes the opportunity to smell the air and carefully listen to determine if she can detect and smells or sounds that would indicate they are near the Kobolds or to otherwise help pinpoint the party's approximate location in or around the ruins.

Jessie Tosscobble III's AppearanceJessie is small standing at 2 foot 8 inches and weighing a mere 27 pounds. As such, the lass intentionally keeps her brown hair long to cover her halfling features, which allows the rogue to pass herself off as a small humanoid or even young human or half-elven child when convenient or necessary.

Dressed dark purple clothing, which is overlaid with attractive black leather accoutrements, Jessie keeps the paraphernalia of her 'profession' secreted upon her person, and especially the authorities, except when in use.

Her friendly blue eyes and warm, sincere smile are disarming and allow the lass to paint a picture of a young girl who is completely unintimidating by all appearances, an assumption often made by others which suits her well and which she actively cultivates.

To promote this look of youth or innocence, most of Jessie's weapons, alchemical doodads, pack, and other equipment are kept hidden under her clothing and also by her large heavy dark green cloak.

Aeruiel Moonshadow   Half-Moon Elf Barbarian from Ashabenford

Aeruiel asks her companions, "Now that we have a way out, what are we to do now? Should we leave and stock up supplies? Picking up more equipment that might aid us in further exploring might be a good idea. We can always come back and continue where we left off."

OoC

Might not be such a bad idea to go out and pick up some more exploring supplies.

Also, why are we hear again? I forgot our objective.

AppearanceFemale half-elf, age 17, blonde, blue eyes, fair skin, 5'-7" tall weight about 125 lbs.

She is described as a willful and free spirited young woman, who likes playing pranks, and flies into fits of rage when bullied.

Well, let's see where we come out at and then decide what to do. Our friend in the tree said that passage led to the kobold lair so we should probably check the rest of the caves to see if there is another passage. Wish we had some way to deal with the annoying fey things in there. Don't necessarily want to kill them, but we need to neutralize them.

Rodin steps forward and uses his dagger to make a way through the vines, careful not to stab himself with the thorns on them.

Aeruiel Moonshadow   Half-Moon Elf Barbarian from Ashabenford

Aeruiel tells Rodin, "If we could learn something about the fey, then we can probably find something to appease it. Do any of us know anything about fey's and what they like? Or maybe, anyone who could educate us? Might be worth it to learn how best to deal with them so they can stop harassing us."

OoC

Anyone back home knowledgeable about fey's? We could ask them for tips and tricks on how best to deal with the fey and maybe gain an ally out of them.

While Aeruiel throws out some suggestions, Rodin tries to cut a path through the briars. It takes the better part of half the hour to clear a path through the dense thicket of briars while avoiding the worst of it, and Rodin finds himself outside in a small copes of white ash and beech, its underbrush thick with briars.

Through the trees he can clearly make out the ruins just west of his position.

We managed to find our way outside again. The ruins are to the west. Mind all the thorn bushes.

So, our choices seem to be, head back to town and see if we can find some more people to join us and help us out. It is obvious by our last few conflicts, that we are in over our heads and need help. Or we go back into the caves and try to get past the fey and see if there is another tunnel leading to the kobold lair and see if we can manage to fight our way through them this time.

As for going back to town, it might get us some help, but it will not improve my lack of weapons. My bow is in the hands of the kobolds and that was all I had besides this dagger. And I have only a few copper coins, so could not afford to buy any new weapons. And it could take several weeks to months for me to make another bow.

And not to be a total downer, but if we can't handle some oversized bugs and some kobolds, without getting our butts kicked, what the heck do we think we are going to do against a mounted war party? Which is why we came here to start with.

He waits to see what the rest of the group thinks their next actions should be.

Jessie listens to her buddy Rhodey as she enjoys a bit of fresh air and sunshine before saying in a hushed voice, "Rodin, we can make a sling for you at no cost, however you'll have to use smooth stones instead of lead bullets for ammunition. But they're easy to find," she adds with a smile. "I can help you with both tasks."

"You can also make a club for free if you are willing to put in a little time. Both of these simple ancient weapons of shepherds could be fashioned while our casters rest and recover their spells. Then, at least, you'll be better armed, and they'll be at full power, no matter what we decide to do," she suggests.

"After all, even a trip back to town can be fraught with danger, or we can try to get your bow back. Either way, we'll be better prepared for whatever we decide to do than we are now," the diminutive Halfling logically concludes.

Turning to her other colleagues, in an effort to assess the currently tactical abilities of the group, the burglar asks her new friends the same lowered tone, "Are all of the rest of you carrying both a melee and a ranged weapon?"

If everyone is up for it, I guess we should go back into the caves and check the area where the vines attacked. With luck that was a spell and they can't do it again. If we can't find any other tunnels leading to the kobolds, then I guess we withdraw back to the surface and rethink what we are going to do. I would really like to get my bow back. It is a family heirloom and I would rather not be the one to lose it.

If the others are for it then he will lead the way back to the chamber with the vines and unless someone else wants to go in first, he will lead the way and hope the vines are gone.

When Rodin reveals that his missing bow is a family heirloom and that he would like very much to retrieve it from the kobolds, Jessie nods affirmatively as she takes the matter to heart especially when it comes to matters of 'family.'

"Ok Rodin, you lead us safely through the vine area, but once the coast is clear then I should take point again just in case there are more traps ahead," the diminutive rogue adds with a since smile.

Even though Rodin is now the spear-point of the party's formation, the tiny Halfling burglar will still follow a few paces behind with her loaded short bow in hand, always watching and listening for any signs or sounds of movement or anything unusual in the surrounding environment.

Kethra and Maximilian nods in agreement with Rodin's suggestions and with Jesse's support, even Aeruiel is swayed. Kethra assures you all she has some curative magics left, but as your torches have expired by now, Rodin is forced to light a new one as you delve back through the concealed doorway and into the tunnels below the ruined keep.

Making your way carefully past the temporarily jammed falling grate, Rodin soon finds himself facing the same scene of unexpected beauty Jesse had witnessed a brief while ago. A veritable forest of varicolored stalactites and stalagmites cover the ceiling and floor of the larger rough-hewn cavern. A rent in the ceiling, which Rodin guesses is the small sinkhole in the ruin above, lets in the highsun light from the surface above and a profusion of viny plants grow among the stalagmites on the floor, with a tiny, swift stream flowing through it all and vanishing through a crack in the wall he's moving along.

Suddenly, the vines covering the floor about him seem to some to life and slither swiftly up his legs!

When the vines come to life in the beautiful room of stalactites and stalagmites and start to head toward Rodin, Jessie's first instincts cause the diminutive rogue to take a few steps backwards through the ranks of her colleagues and away from the insidious plants out of instinct rather than being threatened by its reach.

After all, it wasn't that long ago that Jessie was similarly attacked by the overly aggressive petunia, and the burglar could clear remember the horrible feelings at being unable to dodge the attack of the attacking vines and thereafter fiercely grappled. As a matter of fact, once they had ahold of her, that it was only a miracle the party was able to pry her free from their deadly grasp.

Turning to her colleagues once she has reached a safer place near the rear of the formation, the tiny Halfling says excitedly to her colleagues, "Does anyone have a rope we can use in case Rodey gets trapped," totally forgetting that she is not 'allowed' to call her buddy by his nickname?!!! "If not, something long we can reach to him in case we have to pull him free?"

Rodin dances back out of the reach of the vines.

Well, there is good and bad news. Good news is this is not a magical attack from the fey. Bad news is it is an Assassin Vine. That main stalk up there is the actual Assassin Vine. It has the ability to use other nearby plants to help it entangle creatures that get too close. It can use the main vine there as a whip attack and try to wrap around its victim and strangle them to death. Other than that it is a typical plant. If any of you have fire spells that can reach it, we could burn it out. Or we can try some flaming arrows and try to burn out that main vine.

He looks at the others to see if they have any other ideas. And he tries to look into the far reaches of the chamber and see if there is another passage out on the other side.

Jessie smiles when Rodin dips, dodges and dances away from the insideoius and deadly vines.  Calling out the obvious to her colleagues, the dinimutive Halfling says, "Never mind!  Forget the rope!  He's out!"

Thereafter, the tiny rogue listens carefully as Rodin informs the party what he learned about the nasty plants and how we might kill the aptly named Assassin Vine with fire, but unfortunately, she does not have anything so flammable. "Nothing here that will burn them."

After pondering the matter for a few moments while the others discuss options to destroy or burn the nasty Nasturtium, Jessie speaks up saying, "We all heard a voice earlier down here claiming to be a fairy."

"Since this vine seems to feast on living creatures, do you suppose the 'voice' could have made it safely through this room," she asks the group?  "If not, then there might be another way to get through."

Thinking for a moment, she adds, "I don't think we checked out the path of the stream near the entrance, but maybe there was nothing to check out.  I can't remember.  Either that, or we might have missed something hidden."
