Sighs with disappointment at the at the lack of loot. "Oh well, too bad! I suppose it's good you killed that vine before it killed any people. We should be careful down here--the Harpers put dozens and dozens of traps in this complex to prevent Zhents from taking it over during the Time of Troubles."

Ah well. Better move on.

Rodin will lead the way down the tunnel the ants came out of.

Let's try to avoid fighting the ants, unless we have no choice. With luck we can move past their area with no troubles.

OOC

Elven Lowlight vision, so he can see 40' a if full lit rather than the normal 20 of the torch.

Will take 10 on Spot and Listen checks for a total of 15 each when not in combat.

It gets a +3 bonus if any of those are applied to Drow or large spiders.

Rodin is still borrowing Auriel's bow.

The serpent tongue arrows do both slashing and piercing damage. They are designed to use to cut ropes and break things more effectively.

Jessie frowns when the group's search turns up nothing of interest nor value in the Assassin Vine's prior hunting territory, however that also meant that it did not likely kill any sentient humanoids which was the only silver lining to take from the lack of discovery.

The diminutive Halfling rogue will also scout ahead with Rodin, sneaking forward with her fancy composite short bow in hand and loaded with a razor-sharp metal tipped arrow as the pair watch and listen for the sight, sound or even smell of the Giant Ants or their nest.

Jessie Tosscobble III's AppearanceJessie is small standing at 2 foot 8 inches and weighing a mere 27 pounds. As such, the lass intentionally keeps her brown hair long to cover her halfling features, which allows the rogue to pass herself off as a small humanoid or even young human or half-elven child when convenient or necessary.

Dressed dark purple clothing, which is overlaid with attractive black leather accoutrements, Jessie keeps the paraphernalia of her 'profession' secreted upon her person, and especially the authorities, except when in use.

Her friendly blue eyes and warm, sincere smile are disarming and allow the lass to paint a picture of a young girl who is completely unintimidating by all appearances, an assumption often made by others which suits her well and which she actively cultivates.

To promote this look of youth or innocence, most of Jessie's weapons, alchemical doodads, pack, and other equipment are kept hidden under her clothing and also by her large heavy dark green cloak.

As Rodin moves forward into the larger cavern to the south of the grotto, the light almost immediately shines upon a great heap of debris. This chamber has an odd smell about it, both acrid and musty at the same time. The pile consists of dirt and sawdust heaped against the cave wall and extends almost all the way to the ceiling. Protruding form the pile in small bunches are small shiny, oval-shaped, translucent eggs, tens of them by the look of it.

In the dim light, save to Rodin and Aeruiel's eyes, up on top of the pile is ant, similar to the others you'd seen but almost fully the length of a horse!

It seems motionless as two ants of the sort you'd seen earlier seem busy at work tending to the heap of dirt and sawdust in the dim light of the torch. It seems they have not noticed you as of yet.

So far they don't seem to care about us. Lets stick to the far wall and stay as far away from them as we can and try to move past them. Don't make any threatening actions and maybe it can stay that way.

Rodin will lead the way, sticking to the far wall and moving at about half speed. He keeps his bow in hand with an arrow on the string, but not drawn or pointed at anything.

When it's suggested that the party try to quietly skirt the edge of the nest simply by staying pressed against the southern wall, Jessie frowns as she does a double-take looking ahead down the passageway and estimating the distances, which is one of her fortes' having spent a lifetime sneaking in and out of tight spaces.

Holding up the advance momentarily, the diminutive Halfling whispers, "You'll never make it past their nest. That space is only about ten feet wide at the choke point and half of that is occupied by worker ants. You'd be right next to them; Only a couple feet away, and I can guarantee you that they will defend the eggs and queen to the death. To them, you'll either be considered an intruder or food."

"I believe we either have to fight, somehow render them unable to move, or simply go around them. Perhaps we could follow the unexplored passage with the small stream. It might be a viable alternative to go around the nest," she politely suggests in the same hushed tone. "However, if we do fight them, then it will have to be done quickly, because there won't be just these two ants."

"There might be more ants on the other side of the nest which we can't see, plus we know for sure another group of ants is out hunting in the nearby passages and could be drawn back to the nest by the commotion or even scent of battle, possibly trapping us between foes in front and then enemies directly behind," she adds with true concern, especially given the fact that much of the magician's powers, including curative spells, were nearly spent for the day.

Nonetheless, Jessie won't try to stop anyone from trying their luck at dangerous game of 'Russi-Ant Roulette' and instead the tiny burglar likewise hangs back with her loaded fancy short bow in hand, using the corner of the cavern as partial corner and concealment as she watches and listens for the sight or sound of movement or anything unusual, especially for the other group of ants that might approach from the side or rear flanks while her colleagues watch the nest.

If anyone tries, she simply adds in a soft, sincere voice and stands ready to provide cover fire if needed, "Good luck and be careful!"

Rodin stops at Jessies comment.

Ah, good idea.

He is too embarrassed to say that he had mistook that for the way they had originally entered, leading to the fey they had moved past. 😳

He will head down the passage with the little stream.

A quick about face puts you headed in the direction the stream seems to be flowing from. The light of Rodin's torch reveals a widening in the cavern and though dimly lit, Jesse immediately spots some more of the oversized ants. This chamber too gives off the same odd smell, both acrid and musty at the same time. Two great heaps of debris dot the room.

One of these seems to be mostly leaves, branches, and other litter form the forest above. A profusion of mushrooms and other fungi sprout from them.

The larger pile consists of rocks and dirt. This is heaped against the cave wall and extends all the way to the ceiling, and though it? Several holes, each large enough to admit a couple hin, dot the surface of the pile. Jesse can barely make out an ant at the top of the large pile and another tending to the smaller pile. Rodin can clearly make these out as well as barely make out another ant tending to the smaller pile.

Well, the ants are on both sides. So, now our choices are to try to move past or we go back up and around and risk the chamber with the fey. There was a pool there with a small stream leading off in this direction. Going that way we might be able to get around and bypass the ants.

Looking at the new guys he explains.

There is a fey there that stays hidden but uses a voice to try to make us think it was the some powerful being. It hit us with a stinking cloud that did nothing but make you cough. Granted it would make it difficult to fight in the cloud and it makes it hard to see. But otherwise it was harmless.

If everyone agrees he will lead the group back up and around and hope the fey will just shut up and let them pass.

Jessie is internally relieved when the party decides to explore the other passageway with the stream, but unfortunately the Giant Ants have occupied part of the portion of the cave system as well. Noticing the foes immediately by smell then sight, the diminutive rogue holds up her fist to stop the party and motions for everyone to back out.

Once in a safer area, the rogue listens to Rodin and nods her head affirmatively whispering, "That might be the best alternative to explore. If worse comes to worse and we can't make it through that way, then I believe I might be able to get us past the Giant Ants if we have no other choices. I think we should try the other route first, for sure."

Continuing before anyone asks, the halfling says, "But if we need an alternate plan, we know that the Ants will protect the queen at all costs. So, if a fake threat is made to the Queen's chamber, it should draw the soldiers and workers from this room back to protect the queen, and then we might be able to make it through the room with the leaf piles."

"It's not even clear it would work and it's highly risky, but it is a viable fall-back plan to consider should the Fey route not work," the Halfling burglar adds while quietly leading the party back to the area indicated by Rodin with her loaded short bow in hand as she watches and listens for the sight or sound of movement or anything unusual.
