Chapter 1 — Investigating The Pyre

Sister Azura

"Um... um... right..."

Still struggling with her book, Bianca peers into the darkness of the crypt. She thinks she's managed to line up the requisite magical energies correctly - but there's only one way to find out.

Unfortunately, as she draws closer, she sees that she's a little too late. Thankfully, several of the skeletons have now been dealt with, but more importantly Darhana is right up close with them, and in the way of Bianca's spell!

"Er, Darhana, um..." Bianca wants to ask her to move, but the other woman seems a little preoccupied with the skeletons themselves. Not sure what else to do, Bianca waits for an opening.

Actions

Move ~5ft closer, to put the target square within range.

Cast Grease, aiming it at the 10ft square where #4 and #5 are, and the two squares above them closer to the others. Noriko is now up on a ledge so should escape it.

Spend 1 point from Arcane Reservoir to increase the DC by (thanks to Potent Magic) 2 points, for a total of 18.

Um... ready an action to cast, I guess? But I'm hoping that the skellies are kind of done for without Bianca's help now, anyway.

Darhana's sword stabs through an empty void where normally there'd be a liver or perhaps some intestines, finding no purchase other than some tattered shreds of clothing.  Kaichar has a bit more luck with the same skeleton however, his claws chipping away some small fragments of its skull with his most recent swipe.

 

Lars launches his javelin past his allies, but in trying to avoid them it also soars over the skeleton's left shoulder before clattering onto the stone floor of the hall some distance away.  Behind him, Bianca begins preparing a a spell hoping it's not too late.

 

With an upward swing of her ōdachi, Azura shatters the right tibia and fibula of the skeleton nearest her, the follow-through of the strike from her blade sending several other bones flying as the whole frame crashes down onto the floor beside the pillar.

 

And now with the obstacle gone, but the last remaining undead too far away for his sword, Neskas closes in, directing Snappy to stomp on those clattering bones as they advance to cut down their final opponent.  Surprsingly, a light tap on the leg is all it took for the thing to lose balance and topple over as well, its skull bouncing away from the rest a few times.

 

With another touch of the wand Sandru snuck into her saddlebags, Noriko manages to regain some of her vitality and composure, just as that runaway skull rolls harmlessly to as halt.

"Oh... oh my... I've never seen anything like that before!" Bianca babbles, still in a state of shock. The orcs and wolves had been bad enough, but to be attacked three times in a single day... and by undead!

"Do you-- do you really think there could be more of them?" she asks, nervously. "Should... shouldn't we get back to town, to warn people? You could have been killed!"

spacer.pngNeskas calmly dismounts, lashes his lance to snappy, remounts and pulls his longsword. "Between this, the washed out bridge, the wolves and the orcs, there is definitely something going on. If we don't head back to town now, we will be spending the night here or trying to cross the river in the dark. We could poke around, but I'm not sure we should leave the horses out there. I don't like the idea of combing through a tomb at night. It might be best to go back and leave town at first light tomorrow so we have a day to find out what is going on."

"I would stay here," Darhana says, "well, not right here, but in the vicinity.  There should be some good camping spots around.  That way we can be here a bit after first light and do a lot of stuff.  And I think we won't be able to make the town before it gets dark."

Now that the scare of the undead rising has been abated, you have another quick look at your surroundings.  Just outside of the entrance archway into the Pyre, the landscape is beginning to take on a slightly orange hue, as the sun is beginning to slip behind the he distant fog rolling in from the open waters of the Varisian Gulf in the west, casting a hazy orange  tone over everything beneath the tallest limestone pavements of Devil's Platter on the opposite side.

The small string of horses and ponies outside, possibly the mode of transportation that carried the workers here from Sandpoint, lay dead on the grass, most likely from the skeleton whose bones were found underneath.  Overhead, shadows of carrion birds now begin to circle the sky.

 

Inside, besides the now staidly battle scene, a handful of skeletons in all having been put to their final, if destructive rest, piled in the centre of this hall there are two fresh bodies, both seeming to bear wounds that suggest they must have suffered some ill fate.  It seems there are still some effects left behind, in the form of several workmen's tools scattered about close to the bodies, as well as a pair of backpacks, leaning against one of the round pillars.

 

As the light level inside the long chamber begins to fade somewhat, you become keenly aware that this place is unlit.  At the far end of hall, a faded painting of a woman in armour adorns the wall.

Along either side of the room, several short steps lead up to a risen platform about two and a half feet high, and a wooden door leads out of the hall from each platform.

 

An echoing wail is heard somewhere in the distance, within the crypt somewhere beyond this chamber.

 

Darhana Only

The sound of the wailing is male, and while you can't exactly make out what he's verbalizing, there is no doubt that it's coming from behind the door on the east wall of this room.

"I can’t stay out here overnight!" Bianca exclaims, still stood outside the Pyre. She has no desire to get any closer to the dead bodies, and is rather preoccupied with all this talk of camping - something she most definitely is not prepared for! "What would my father say? Besides, if there are more of those things about, it… it could be dangerous. We need to tell someone that the bridge is out, too, so they can repair it."

spacer.pngNoriko nods to Azura, "I am better, I used a second charge from the wand."  Addressing Lars, she frowns, "The distant screaming was happening before and through the first fight, so it is either not a human cry or if it is, it is someone threatened but not immediately in mortal danger else they would be long since dead.  Regardless, though we really need to rest before futher exploring... we can't leave someone alive in peril."
