A Baronet's Daughter and a Sunless Citadel IC

Recruiting Post

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Missive from Baronet Vurnor Leng
I am Baronet Vurnor Leng, of the town of Oakhurst. There is a rumor in these lands that a plea for help tacked to the wall of a tavern will be answered by a party of otherworldly adventurers from realms untold. I just hope it is true.
A crisis has come upon both my lands and my daughter. Several farmers and livestock have been found dead, covered in stab wounds unlike any we have seen before. At the same time my own daughter, Olivia, has fallen ill and the priests have been unable to cure her. Beyond that, the local adventurer group who tried to investigate the deaths and find a cure for my daughter have been missing for just over a month now. I believe a cure for my daughter can be found in a goblin infested ruin known locally as the Sunless Citadel. Until a couple years ago, once a year goblins from the ruin would trade trinkets and gold for a single shining red apple that was said to cure any ailments for those who ate it. These "traders" have not been heard from in the last two years. I'm certain one of those apples can cure my daughter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Outside Oakhurst, Besides the New Road

The party of five finds themselves teleported just to the side of a road, with a town in view to the south. Some are acquainted, some are not, but from this moment on they will have to rely on each other. At least for the duration of this mission, that is.

Even from here, some of the buildings stick out. Two in particular seem to be the only buildings made of stone or brick, and one of them is even lime washed white. It stands to reason one of them is probably the home of the Baronet who's letter found its way to the Realms Folded Tavern.

One moment Malus was talking to his new Gith acquaintance and now he was in the middle of the road again. Well, the middle of some road. Smell already told him it is not his or pocket dimension. It likely means he got accepted for the job on the board, well a good way to feel how things really worked around here.

From the last time, he could expect several people from the inn, anyone he knows he asked himself. Finding Roxy here would be amusing. In the meantime he looks at his surroundings

Céibhfhionn

spacer.pngCéibhfhionn blinks in the sudden light of being outside. She allows herself a brief once-over of her temporary companions before taking in the surrounding area. In her time spent on the Prime, she's mostly gotten over how bland human towns are, but it's still a bit jarring to the flighty Fae. She knows humans know what color is (even if their colors pale in comparison to the Feywild). She pulls out a small notebook and begins scribbling notes about what she observes and their mission. Should this be a play or a ballad? Both? Neither? Hm. Too soon to judge.

After a minute or two she finishes what she was doing and whips out her travel lute, beginning to strum a little tune. Just a quiet little performance for now. Every good story needs background music after all!

Malus notices something a little out of the ordinary. The large grazing fields around the town are devoid of any farmers or livestock. However, the smaller pins where livestock are usually kept overnight are completely full. Quite unusual for midday in a farming community.

The party is a little too far away from the town to discern much else.

felipe-bracioli-monk.jpg.801880d3559483d3787f017ce68115c6.jpgKethar takes a slight stuttering breath as he transitioned from the Tavern to this country road. This felt slightly different from traveling by way of a portal. He was curious if this was closer to the plane shifting that his people could do. It was a skill that he had not perfected yet. Looking around him he noticed at least one of the others with him was a familiar face. Young Master Malus, who he had recently met and even sparred with to test their skills. There was also what appeared to be some Fey lady and who from the sounds coming from them was some kind of musician. He took a moment to listen to them and smiled as he did so. While the Githzerai were not known for their great music, he recognized talent when he heard it. "Well young miss, it appears that we shall be travelling companions for a time. I am Kethar, a humble Wanderer, and healer, with some small skill at protecting others." this last he says with a small grin for Malus and a wink. Turning his attention to Malus "Well young master Malus, a pleasure to see that we shall be working together." Turning towards the town he makes a wide arching gesture towards it. "Should we see if the lord is ready for us"

Malus gives a brief grin to Kethar, cursing his short attention span, he was missing something. "Hold on, something is not right here. We should approach this carefully. Does anyone have familiar who could go in before us, or an invisibility spell? Something like that"

Booth

image.png.5a12008c7639d0ea159562010b45e66a.png

Booth stumbles ungraciously out of the rift, and pads after the group ahead of him. The aftereffects are not as strong as the first time, which he appreciates.

As they walk down the path, just moments before when he was in that magic tavern, he admires the surrounding, taking in the scene now in a different light ever since he started his apprenticeship in the druidic secrets. Booth turns to the songstress at her voice, and for a flash of a moment a sense of familiarity crosses between them, though not of personal nature. The Rootbearer's touchFey creatures regard you as though you are fey. (Nymph's Kiss feat) has marked him in mystical ways that he is still learning about.

You see a small gnome, smaller than the usual size for their kin, garbed in hood and travel cloak. His hood is down, showing a gawking face marveling at the planar travel he just experienced. Sometimes his ears may bloom flower earrings that fall off after some time, or the drying bellseeds that tinkle softly when he moves his head. Still getting used to people seeing his face, and unsure of what they will be going into, Booth gets to plucking off the flowers around his earlobe.

As a Rootbearer, he carries the mark of greenery on his very body, with branches and leaves covering visible portions of his extremities, while his left hand one of the few parts that still carry his deep gnome heritage of rock-colored brown skin. One of his eyes a twinkling cheery gnome, and the other eye the deep indigo swirls of summer petals. Twine line his short hair, and patches of bark peek from the gaps in the clothing. Bandages are wrapped around the areas where the flesh ends and the plants start.

He looks up at the hulking man with the wild hair. 'You sense something amiss?' He raises one tawny palm. 'Sorry, bad manners. The name's Booth. You'll have to be patient with me for the time being. It's not everyday for me that I get to whisk about like gods and angels. The fastest we've ever moved back home is on a rothe cart.'

Booth walks steadier this time, wondering what is it the huge man noticedPassive Listen using +13 before dice or take ten.. He takes in a few breathsScent ability, seeing if he picks out something beyond the floral scentscape of the meadow.

Booth's Natural Senses

Private doesn't seem to be working, so I'm repeating the info for Ensou in a spoiler box.

Booth can smell a faint odor of death. Both rotting, coming from the outlaying fields, and burning, coming from the town. The odor from the town is also mixed with with the smells of burning incense and wood, as if from a funeral pyre.

Kaldakaczil blinks as he arrives with the rest, raising a hand to cover his eyes against the sun as he peered briefly towards the village. It seemed fairly typical, if a bit on the larger side, of the pastoral communities he had come across while traveling with his mentor, so he did not think much of it until Malus pops up. Before he could introduce himself, however, a black feathered bird pops its head out from the paladin's backpack, answering on its own with a low squawk. "How much shinies you paying?"

"Shush, Luca," the man replied with a chuckle, reaching back to playfully shut the avian's beak by holding it in a hand. "Apologies for my friend's blunt behavior. My name is... Gawain," the bird gives an eye roll at the name, as well as a protesting squawk at the paladin's hold upon his beak. "This is Luca, he will be happy to fly ahead, won't he?"

Another traded glare, before finally the avian acquiesced with a huff, ruffling up his feathers before finally giving his best attempt at a nod before his hand was released. "Grumble, grumble... Work for the shining paladin, get plenty of shinies in turn I thought, noooo... Goody noble li- human," but with that protest out of the way, the bird hopped off the man's shoulders and took flight, craning high into the air before making a circling pass over the town to see what he can see before reporting back.

"That unpleasantness aside," the man turned his attention away from the fading black feathered visage to his companions, placing his hand upon the symbol of Bahamut hanging on his neck, and speaking a word of powerMage Armor, CL 2 to help protect him for the next few hours. "I do not know any of you, but I hope we can do some good for these poor people, by the Lord of the North Winds grace."

Luca's Flight

Show Just in case the private post is also not working for Amoren

Luca sees the village seems to be somewhat locked down. What people are moving around are moving around in groups, and a few armed guards are either standing watch at the perimeter of the town, or patrolling through it. Looks like there is about 15 such guards. The livestock pins are overfilled, with little room for the animals to move. In a small field just outside town Luca can see several burned out rectangular fires surrounded by flowers and incense burners. Each is about 7 or 8 feet long by 3 feet wide. That said, nothing jumps out as dangerous.

The population seems somewhat diverse, mostly human, but Luca can see members of multiple other races in the few groups of people moving around. Including halflings, dwarves and gnomes. Even a handful of orcs.

He scrunches his nose at the severe fragrance. He frowns, raises his palm to gesture for the group to hold.

Booth points his left hand to the outlaying fields. 'Rotting corpses from there.' And points his right hand to the town. 'The bodies in town carry the scent of flames and charred ash. There is also wood,' he sniffs again, 'and maybe incense.'

After a few minutes, the raven would sweep back down, coming to land nimbly on the paladin's shoulders before starting to preen its feathers back into immaculate position as it listened to Booth's report. "Corpses!? Food! Can I go? The other ravens might not have gotten to all their eyes yet! Oh, all I saw in the village was strange square bonfires! A loooooooot of strange square bonfires. And the people there seem awfully paranoid. Like they're worried someone will be stealing from their nest, even keeping their food all nice and bunched together nearby! Oh. No monsters or anything besides that. Nothing shiny, either."

Kaldakaczil/Gawain offered an apologetic sigh at the bird's statements, but reached up to give an affectionate rub along the creature's head to silence the talkative avian, drawing satisfied coos from the childish bird. "Pyres, it sounds like. I must commend the people of this town for taking the time to give each of them a proper send off rather than a mass burial, considering their numbers. Which also implies it might be their own who have suffered, rather than some passerby."

Turning his attention back towards the party, he offers a nod towards the town before starting to continue down the path. "Sounds like they're in a worse state than when the notice arrived. We should be mindful to not seem too threatening, they may be on edge after such a travesty. Which reminds me, as we make our way in, what specialties do each of us possess? We will be needing to rely upon each other while we face whatever evil has stricken these poor people. I myself am a paladin in training, tutored by Ser Aluric, and pledged to the God Bahamut. Fortunately, I also have magical ability thanks to some dragonbloodWell, he's TECHNICALLY not lying there. At the first question from a small Gnome Malus nods his head and just says "Malus" then nods toward the meadow and full pens. "Animals should be out grazing by now, something's wrong with the people in the village." At the paladin's answer, he shrugs and shows one of the ads from the count "Maybe showing them this will prove we were invited?" Soon he too can smell funeral pyres and looks at Sir Aluric "We won't like what we see when we walk in the town will we?"

At the question of his expertise, he thinks for a while "I don't have expertise per see, currently, I'm on my spiritual journey to see the outside world and decide whether will I take my vowes and become Monk of the Deepan Village Monastery. Until then most I am is a disciple of Nine Sword Style, specializing in unarmed combat. During my Year out of the monastery, I picked up some less... sophisticated, but nonetheless effective unarmed fighting styles.

Suddenly the party sees a pair of armed individuals coming at them from the town. The two, a man and a woman, have their spears lowered. "Who goes there?!" Just as suddenly as the two apparent hostiles appear, their hostility lowers as one of them points to the paper Malus has in his hands. "I'll be damned. The baronet's plan seems to have worked." The two look the party down. " 'Otherworldly' adventurers for sure." The man points to himself then to the woman. "I'm Ben, she is Lu. We are deputies of constable Felosial. Um, sorry for the scare. We can take you to the baronet's manor if you'd like."
