Part 1 - The Protest in the Park

Kintargo

Even with the cobblestones of Argent Avenue and the foliage of Aria Park still wet from the morning's light rain, dozens of Kintargans have gathered along the façade of the opera house to protest the city's new lord-mayor, Paracount Barzillai Thrune. The city's new leader was appointed by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, in the wake of the previous lord-mayor's sudden flight from the city - an event that still has local rumormongers whispering furiously. In a scant seven days, Paracount Thrune has instituted martial law, a curfew, and seven outlandish and polarizing proclamations. These actions and more have called many of Kintargo's dissatisfied citizens here on this overcast morn. There's been no sign yet of Barzillai Thrune himself, and the opera house's doors remain tightly closed - as they have since the man chose the landmark as his new home - but judging by the growing sound of the protesters, he surely can't ignore the scene on the streets below much longer.

The only acknowledgement of the protest seems to be in front of the opera house, where a dozen dottariDottari is the name given to city guards in Cheliax. The term appears to be loosely equivalent to the Common word "wardens". guards stand before the entrance. Standing with them is a scowling woman, not dressed in any uniform.

So far the protest appears to be peaceful, though citizens are still gathering in Aria Park.

 

Once everyone has joined the tableplop link, I will open up the map so people can place their tokens. You may place them anywhere in the scene except within 5 feet of the opera house.

Once the scene starts you will have the option to perform a number of different actions as the protest goes on.
Please note what action you are performing if you are choosing to do so.

Saria was sitting on a bench, looking at the people. She wasn't sure what exactly was going on here, but she had heard that the singer Shensen would be here, so she had taken a spot where she could see just about the entire square, just in case she did show up somewhere. She kept looking around for Shensen and anything that might happen.

Ah yes. The deaf girl. If for no other reason than her nigh-debilitating condition, she's garnered a small amount of unsolicited social notoriety.

 

It wasn't like she was a celebrity or anything, but some of the locals know Alexis by her mannerisms and inability to speak verbally beyond the occasional high pitched intonations, especially when she got frustrated. Beyond that, Alexis made few friends if any, and among them Lilette was the only one who visits on the frequent.

 

Which is just fine by her, the young woman surely prefers it that way. Besides, these normal people can hardly appreciate her inner world, never could they touch the girl reaching in. How could they?

 

And those few rare ones who understand, well, there's a reason why Lilette and Alexis have been such hard and fast friends. So when the amateur pickpocket confessed that she was going to go and attend the protest, what was Alexis going to do but follow along, keep a watchful eye, and make sure her friend doesn't get in trouble?

 

And so here we are, the pair of them stepping onto the grounds of Aria Park, not even really sure what either of them were getting into. No more than four or five steps onto the cobblestone walkway of Argent Avenue, the brunette tugged on her friend's sleeve, with an urgent "Ugh! Ugn, Ngeh!"

 

She was determined to tell Lilette. With a flash of gestures with her hands and fingers, she signed to the blonde, "🤚👌👇👋 👆✌️👊🤙 ✌️👇👏 👎☝️👌👈👍🤙👆🖖Don't make any problems!"

The First Hour

Over the next hour more people filter into the park outside the opera house, discontented voices rising as the time passes. Still there is no sign of Barzillai Thrune, the subject of today's protest.


From Gellius's position on the outside of the crowd he is able to pick up a worried conversation. An older man dressed in the smock and flour stains of a baker was speaking with his young apprentice, both of them looking exhausted from staying out after their early start.

"My ma said Thrune's gonna bring back public excrutions to Kintargo."

"Lad, don't know about that, won't make him any more popular round these parts."

"But Ma said only criminals would get it, that they'd deserve it."


The older man scoffed and ruffled the apprentices hair. "Don't know if anyone deserves doghousing, the stories I have heard- never you mind that boy."

They had moved on deeper into the crowd before Gellius could hear more.


John of Patmos had worse luck as he listened to the crowd, as no matter where he seemed to move a couple of middle aged women seemed to be intently and loudly discussing their daughters-in-law and their doubts on the competency of said women. No sooner did he settle into a new area than they were gossiping near him again.


Lilette signed backI won't get caught. to Alexis, rolling her eyes at the older womans concern. She stayed near Alexis's side for most of the hour, signing commentaryI think that one is only here to impress the girl. He seems bored! Oh, did I tell you I managed to find a kettle, only cost a bit too. We could break some rules tonight?

Oh, that one looks like his face met the backside of a frying pan. I didn't know noses bent like that.
on the gathered people and her day. Then at one point she disappeared, taking advantage of a moment Alexis's eyes had wandered away. Before to long she came back grinning and handed Alexis a a nice looking belt pouchInside is 9 silver and 5 copper. She signed againWe can get meat for dinner. Told you I would be fine. looking rather proud of herself.


Fiametta can see that the crowds patterns are moving strangely. It is easy to identify that those gathered have different goals in mind. There are people who are normal dissatisfied citizens, those that are concerned about the increase in taxes and trade restrictions and those who are angry that Kintargo's normal elections were not used in the assignment of the new Lord Mayor. But there is another undercurrent working against those, something that isn't causing issues right now but appears to be heating up the protest below the surface. Something not guided by random chaos but working with a purpose, with organization.


Saria saw no hint of her idol in the crowds, which wasn't very surprising. She hadn't been seen for days. But as her eyes searched the crowd her ears picked up a conversation.

"-looking foward to seeing Shensen in the role of Aolar, in Huntress of Heroes. Course heard them say she went missing too - probably in some Thrune oubliette. You've heard the way she has been speaking out about the government."

Alexis was distracted for some moments, her attention having gone to reading the various conversations nearby. She was already here, she figures, may as well try to find out a little bit about what's going on.

 

Particularly, what was all this about? What were the people most incensed on? What news of the Iomedeans, or any of the other religious denominations that have been outlawed or otherwise affected?

 

When the blonde shoved the little pouch into her lap, Alexis gave her an innocent stare which quickly turned into a stern glare. Though she shakes her head at the bold little thief to try and admonish her for what just happened, she was smart enough to pocket the pouch quickly to avoid any unnecessary scrutiny.

'Huntress of Heroes', Seria thought, 'I have to get in that one.'

But as new or old shows would probably have to wait until after whatever this is. And if they were right, Shensen would probably not be coming here anyway. She started more to listen more to the people around her to figure out what exactly was going on here and in the city.

Something's not right. Like most people here, Fiametta was here to give their lord and bastard a well-deserved telling off. But she was not here to give him a reason (not like he needed one). Don't go and start anything that'll give his lackeys cause to come down on us!"

The Second Hour

The park was starting to get crowded, people passing by starting to detour around it entirely rather than make their way through the throngs of people. The dottari in front of the Opera House were throwing occasional worried glances to the woman on the steps, her face betraying no emotion. And still there is no sign of Barzillai Thrune.


The gathering crowd was getting louder. Voices blended into each other and more focus had to be paid to not run into someone. Even for those like Gellius and John of Patmos who were attempting to stay on the outskirts of the crowd, it was hard to not get moved around by the massed people. Such conditions were also making lip reading near impossible as peoples mouths were obscured by people passing beside them.

Lilette was trying to observe the crowd around her, surprised at how large it had grown. Seeing the natural jostling start to move Alexis away from where they stood together she hurriedly reached out grabbing her friends hand. Where she had been joking before, now the younger woman was obviously worried.


Fiametta's attempts at driving off the supporters of Barzillai seemed to only call their attention to her. One of them, a sallow looking young man, spat at her feet. "Like your mind's worth anything." His friend, an elf with a permanent smirk across his face, laughed punching the young man in the arm. "I'd bet that mouth of her's what's real made her worthless."


Saria's mind already on the thoughts of imprisonment and obliettes is drawn to a conversation between a group of young adults.

"-pay the fine, it was so much!"

"That's over a months wages. For some candies!"

"It's worse, my brother says the dottari's towers are full. They've taken over warehouses for them now."

"My cousin said the prisoners are being put to work. She saw them being taken over to the Sallix Salt Works."

Alexis was now starting to get quite distraught. Not only was she beginning to have trouble to read the conversations of people around her, the bumping and jostling of the crowd was starting to make her feel very anxious. It was a blessing indeed that Lilette had the sense to reach out and grab her hand, otherwise she would for sure have gotten separated and lost within this ever-growing crowd.

 

Trying not to focus on her distress, the deaf girl took a few deep breaths as she gripped tightly onto her friend's hand, and finally broke her gaze to survey the nearby crowd, trying her best not to get torn from her companion again.

John finds himself maneuvered closer to the fountain where he finds a small pocket of space where he isn't crowded on all sides. Though he isn't able to gain any specific insight into whatever is troubling the people gathered, it's clear that something is driving them into discontent. For two decades, this was his home. Yet, having returned now to this untapped powder keg, he finds it hard to believe that this is the same provincial little town that he left not so long ago.

"What happened here?" he asks himself, trying to understand what is going on. "What has driven these people to this?"

"Or ... was it always this bad, and I couldn't notice because I was blinded by church doctrine?"

Unsatisfied with the lack of answers, he takes advantage of the brief respite and the denser crowd to see what -- if anything -- people are saying.
