"Gah!" John shouts in surprise at the sudden but, if he really considers things, inevitable turn of events. This situation -- this excuse to dominate the citizenry, bring them to heel, and make an example of troublemakers was exactly the situation that his mayorship intended to bring about. And now that he has it, the truncheons have come out.

"Goddess, I should've seen this coming!"

John grabs a passerby by the shoulder and shakes her out a stunned stupor not that different than the one he was in moments ago. "We need to go!" he shouts over the tumult of the panicking crowd. He peers around, trying to find the fastest-yet-safest way out. Not seeing very many people moving, he reiterates his statement as loudly as he can manage. "GOOOO!" Then, heeding his own council, he withdraws from the club-wielding guard standing from him, heading south towards the river trail.

Aria Park

The crowd erupted into chaos. Some of the people tried to fight back against the advancing dottari and the thugs scattered in the crowd. Many tried to flee knocking each other over and trampling those on the ground in their hurry.

A man1 in a silk shirt and close cropped hair dashed toward Saria, his truncheon already on the downswing as he laughed at the panic surrounding him. The weapon swung just in front of her, barely missing.

A half-elf2 similarly attacked John of Patmos as he started to flee, missing as he failed to lead his blow.

Lilette barely saw the attack at her head by a woman4 standing behind her before reacting and ducking out of the way.

Fiametta managed to avoid a similar blow from a young woman3 who had been standing near the men she insulted earlier. The blow connected but the armor she had wisely worn to the protest deflected the attack.

Those attacked with the truncheons could consider themselves lucky. The damage done was likely to end with bruising and soreness. But the dottari's advance was different. Splitting into pairs they isolated people attempting to flee, bringing their heavy maces down and breaking bones and joints.

The woman on the stairs simply watched the chaos unfold until a dagger came sailing out of the crowd. Guided with preternatual aim the dagger hit her square in the throat, blood quickly pumping from around the metal now embedded in her neck.

 Gellius

spacer.png

Catching sight of Alexis near one of the truncheon weilders, Gellius ambles into action. "I say! That's my favorite blacksmith. Have a care sir. Have a care." He steps forward, pulls out his rapier and stabs at the truncheon weilder menacing his friend/aquantance.

John skids to a halt near the river's edge, turning back to watch in dismay as the carnage unfold. The townsfolk apparently didn't react as quickly or decisively as he did, and are now paying the price. As he watches, another innocent person falls beneath the swinging truncheon of one of the distressingly aggressive guardsmen.

"Run, you fools!" he shouts at the top of his lungs, but to no avail. The wails of shock and pain and confusion coming from the crowd drown out his single voice.

"This is wrong," he laments, shaking his head at the unnecessary violence. "But what can I do?"

Then, nearby to his left, he sees sees a lone woman facing offa.k.a. Saria against a club-wielding guard. As he watches, she attempts to fend him off with some measure of arcane magic. Reminded of his Goddess' teachings by the young woman's tenacity, he feels his resolve harden into a decision. "Well, I can't change everything that's wrong ... " he tells himself as he draws his weapon, " ... but maybe I can fix one thing. And maybe that will be enough."

Drawing his weapon, he rushes forward, interposing himself between the guard and the spellcaster. "Goddess protect us," he prays, and feels her divine warmth shielding him from harm.

Fiametta grunts, but is otherwise unbothered as her attacker ineffectually stabs at her armor. She decides to get herself out of a bad situation by placing the more melee-inclined man between her and her attacker, before focusing for a moment and bringing that void within her out into the world. A spiraling sphere of pure darkness emerges from her palm, as she tries to fire around the gentleman and hit her attacker.

As Alexis reached out to grab Lilette's hand the younger woman twisted her wrist, dropping a dagger into her free hand. The woman attacking her swung down at Lilette's wrist smashing it hard enough that Lilette almost lost her grip on the dagger. She responded in kind, slashing up at the woman as she felt Alexis reach out and try to take some of the pain. Her dagger struck true, slashing deeply in retaliation. The pouch Alexis had retrieved had some weight to it, the young boy must have had an eye for what made a purse to grab.

Saria cast her protection just in time, deflecting another blow from the man attacking her. She could see another person seeming to be trying to help people snap out of freeze reactions as he ran from the crowd. In turn, John of Patmos could see small skirmishes breaking out with one standing out as a young woman was drawing a longsword to help defend herself.

Gellius immediately recognized Alexis. The woman with her wasn't as known to him, but the scarring on her face indicated her as the one who often was waiting outside the smithy but never going inside. And then there was the scoundrel, not only was she a threat toward his favorite blacksmith, she had tried to attack another person already. Gel gallantly drew his rapier, thrusting it forward into the ruffians side.

Fiametta attempted to neutralize the same person but missed as a fleeing protester knocked into her.

In the doorway of the Opera House, the woman Nox slowly pulled the dagger out of her throat, examining the blade. She tossed it onto the steps in disgust. As she did so the large hole straight through her neck knit itself closed. She turned around and re-entered the Opera House.

The man who had attack Saria tried again, hoping to take down her defenses. The one who had struck at John of Patmos before he had fled now turned his attention to the next closest victims. He took the place of the woman Lilette had slashed, as she retreated. The man took the opportunity to swap to a mace, preferring to use a much more lethal option against the person who had already shown she could do some damage.

The woman Gellius and Fiametta was fighting had the same idea, dropping her truncheon and pulling out a mace. She made eye contact with Gellius and swung down aiming at his sword arm.

Whether the chaotic movements of the crowd or a failed attempt by those attacking to substitute enthusiasm for skill, none of the blows landed.

The crowd continued to fight against itself to flee. The dottari advanced indiscrimately hitting all within reach with their maces. As people fell another member would stay back long enough to check if they still were alive and stabilize those with more grievous injuries. As soon as they were assured that the downed individual would not die, they immediately put restraints on them.

Alexis might be deaf, but she is certainly not dumb. She knew when she was getting in the way, and when she was endangering her friend. Letting go of Lilette's hand, the brunette took a quick look around and shuffled away from the woman pulling the mace, then drew some strange symbols in the air with her fingertips in front of herself. ⩴₶⧉⏅⏅

And so calling upon the mysteries of the divine, she sent a burst of blessing and courage to those fighting for their lives and freedom, before drawing her morningstar from the baldric on her belt.

Alexis's spell reached out to those fighting back, giving them more courage to stand up. More of the thugs in the crowd were going down, but so were many people in the crowd. Lilette desperately slashed at the man swinging at her, trying to give Alexis some space. She looked over at her friend, desperately signingGo! Right behind you! to Alexis to get out of there.

Gel's rapier pierced a clean hole in the side of the attacker in front of him. A clean hole that rapidly festered and and corroded outward as Fiametta's blast of negative energy hit, using it as an entry point to destroy tissue. The woman looked down, face blanched and collapsed forward onto the street in front of the two.

As Saria stepped back, John of Patmos inserted himself as a human shield between her and her attacker. From this new safer position behind what was the closest to cover she was going to get, she let out a quick spell shocking the man who was pursuing her.

The panicked crowd surged around them as people attempted to flee. Some managed to escape the crush of the crowd only to turn back when they realized their family member, lover or friend hadn't been by their side. Others who had fallen grabbed at the legs of those running, trying to use them to claw their way upright. Near John and Saria a mother was trying to pull her son from the grasp of one of the armbanded men as he attempted to drag the boy back toward the growing mass of bleeding, unconscious and restrained captives.

Beside Alexis one of the dottari's maces smashed into the face of the woman next to her as another caught the stunned woman and with evident practice slapped manacles on her before shoving her off balance.

Those near Gellius and Fiametta fled from the body on the ground the blood slowly pooling underneath it. They weren't able to get far purely due to the density of the crowd. But the burst of negative energy and the gap revealing the dead body attracted the attention of one of the dottari. He ran forward, passing by Alexis in his haste to reach the two who had proven themselves a larger threat than unarmed civilians. "Give up scum!" He roared attempting to attack Fiametta.

The man Saria had shocked stumbled backward, pushing through the crowd back to behind the dottari. He was obviously surprised at being so hurt. But as he did so one of the dottari took advantage of the cleared path and came up on John of Patmos, attempting to strike him down in an attempt to get to the inciter behind him.

The man attacking Lilette swung his mace again, attempting to repeat the blow that had been done to the woman on Alexis's other side. His teeth were bared in an almost maniac grin.

"I say, bad form chap. We were just defending ourselves from some ruffian trying to take advantage of the situation to indulge in some murder. If you could kindly shift to arresting that gang of truncheon bearing thugs, those of us who gathered peacefully to hear the latest proclamation could leave." Gellius steps back, rapier still up. The coat he wears over his armor shows signs of having a fairly large amount of embroidery recently picked out, but is of fine cut and cloth, as befits a minor noble.

Having not the luxury of hearing like some others do, as the scene began to get frantic Alexis' ability to keep up with the movements of the crowd visibly suffered.

As one of the dottari zipped past her, the deaf girl swung her morningstar, managing to hit nothing of note, having been distracted by her friend trying to tell her to run away.

"Aa-a-ahh!" Refusing of course to abandon Lilette, Alexis made her way behind to come around to stand shoulder to shoulder with her friend against the man, but even there her efforts fared mediocrely at best.

Cringing inwardly as he does so, John swings his weapon low, hoping to take the Dottari guard out of the fight without killing him. Over the guard's shoulder, he can see the other guards slowly, inexorably maiming, killing, and/or arresting the protesters one by one. Time was not on their side. And, even if it were, there were always more guards.

"We cannot win this fight," he calls out to the stranger. "We need to save who we can and go!"

Saria agreed with the guy who protected her. She had thought to blast another bolt on the one that had tried to attack her, but then she realised that if they just wounded them, they would break off and run away. That might be the way to go. And while it probably didn't matter for the penalty should they be caught, at least that way they could say they didn't kill anybody.

"Good idea," she said as she blasted out another elemental ray on the guy close by and then moved away, ready to cover with more spells should there be a need.
