Griffen gives his companions a sheepish look as he joins them. "Sorry for being late. Something went screwy with the portals, and I just came through. The captain informed me of everything he knows, what did I miss? What can I do to help with the investigation? I got some small skills at interrogation."

Sir Keltus

After the party get acquainted with their new teammate, you reconvene in an audience room with Sir Keltus, who seems a bit wary. As you enter, Sir Keltus is standing with his back to the door, hands clasped behind his back as he examines a tapestry on the wall with disinterest. When he notices you, he turns and clears his throat. "So, I'm sure there's a good reason why a new prisoner arrived in my brig well after midnight last night?" he asks, "Because this feels like something that cause me a political headache."

"Political headaches 'r not. That 'n is guilty o' tha murder o' one o' the monster folks down there in Penwyle." He produces the journal and flips to the final page. "Wrote 'er own confession right here." He snaps the book shut and tosses it on a nearby table.

"Caught 'er red handed... scrappin' the body fer... parts..." He cheeks flush bright red as he stops to take a breath. "I reckon that's a serious crime in yer city too? Maybe a bit 'o public justice..." He voice takes a takes a low serious tone, "Fairly delivered..." then pops back to it's normal cheeriness, "Will help ease yer tensions jest a bit."

"As fer tha Lady Groak situation, we seem ta have found tha direct culprits, n' they're no longer a threat ta anyone, but we've also discovered a bigger conspiracy behind tha whole thing. N' frankly... I intend ta sort that out before I'm willin' ta call my side o' tha bargain fulfilled." He sidles up next to Brianna and helps her lay out their findings so far.

Sir Keltus

The captain of the guard looks on intently, his face unemotive but clearly strained, as the party explains the goings-on of the prior evening. When Brianna has finished, he takes a few moments to process, then heaves a great, tense sigh that seems to barely contain some real anger.

"So, you went... in to their temple?" he asks carefully, "When no one answered the door? You have done this before, right? You do understand how deputies of the law have to show restrain and propriety in situations like this, right?" He sighs again, and rubs his chin in agitation. "I thought I'd emphasized the delicate nature of the political situation I'm in? If it gets out... well, actually, when it gets out that deputies of the Telamon Bridge Guard broke into the Temple of Tokan-Dor and arrested a worshiper there... well, we're on thin ice with the monsters already, and you'd better believe there's going to be some kind of backlash for this.

"You've put me in a really difficult situation here. You understand that, right?" He chews on his lip for a moment for a moment of agonizing pensiveness. "Well, I suppose there's nothing for it now but to push through and solve this murder. At least then, maybe we'll have the hags on our side again. If you can't solve it... well, Marnie will make us pay a dear price for this.

"Now, about that Temple: I've never been inside. No one from my team has. They don't exactly have an open door policy there. We've suspected something was not right about that place for some time, but we've had... challenges trying to enforce anything in Penwyle. The thing about Penwyle..."

He hesitates, tapping his fingers on the tabletop a few times nervously. "Well, even if they've killed someone else, and not just Lady Groak... it's a little hard for me to enforce that. There are murders everyday in Penwyle, and we simply can't investigate them all. We've barely been able to contain that chaos within the district, let alone try to do anything about it inside. These... people weren't ever meant to live in this kind of civilization, you understand? They simply don't have the mindset or the ethics for it. And our authority structures are completely undermined by the Duke's absence."

He exhales again. "All that to say, if you've got a confession out of her for killing that ettercap, that's well and good, but I'll need you to be able to positively pin Lady Groak's murder on her before it really benefits us here. No one --- not even the other monsters, mind you --- no one is concerned about the death of an ettercap gangster, and there will still be riots if we can't find Lady Groak's murderer. This 'xill' creature you mentioned... you're sure it's the thing they used to kill her? It would have been nice if you'd been able to get some proof of it."

Brianna

spacer.pngBrianna looks contrite when reminded they were supposed to work within the bounds of the law yet did not. Then again, she's never been especially good at that. Still, as Sir Keltus says, it's done now. She explains that unfortunately she has no proof that a Xill was the killer save the wound itself. There was something within it, but between her lack of expertise in the subject of medical examinations and the (understandable, if heavy-handed) interruption of said examination by Lady Marnie, there's a fair chance said evidence was destroyed. If nothing else has happened to the body since, there's a slim chance that there is a Xill egg within the wound yet. The eggs are usually implanted in living, paralyzed hosts and hatch roughly 90 days later.

Brianna admits to being unsure if this would still occur within a deceased host as the young hatching from eggs would normally devour the host from the inside. (Yes, it's gruesome, she knows. She doesn't like it either.)

The old man's cheeks flush slightly at the Captains talk of civilization. He takes a deep breath and releases it slowly, allowing the man to finish his thoughts before calmly responding. "I reckon maybe if you 'n yours gave them folks a bit more benefit o' tha doubt... rather 'n insistin' on tha fact that they can't do better... simply 'cuz o' who 'n what they are... Maybe things 'd go a bit smoother fer ya."

He stretches himself fully upright, several joints popping faintly as he straightens his back. "I can't say you'll ever get 'em ta love ya... but I do know they'll certainly never respect ya... less ya show 'em yer capable of respectin' 'em back. Now, I know that sorta work is hard... aint many things truly worth havin' that come easy... but if you've already decided it's impossible, well... you've already failed."

He reaches down to give his hound a few scratches behind the ear. "That said... deputized under yer authority or not, we're also workin' under whatever authority them monster folks have over themselves. They agreed ta have us solve this case too. So, if you need a little distance, or plausible deniability, or what have you... just tell 'em to come to us directly."

He turns to leave, stopping momentarily at the door to call back over his shoulder, "We aint done yet... and we won't be hard ta find..." He shuffles out into the hall to await his companions.

Griffen was standing in the corner of the room as the others spoke of what they had found and had done. He could almost be heard muttering to himself.

"This is some bullshit, I missed all the fun because those damn portals threw me out days later."

When it seemed the others were leaving the room, he walked out with them. "So what do we do now?"

He catches himself reminiscing and stops, giving the halfling his attention once more. "Any-who... I reckon that means there's plenty o' excitement yet ta be had 'round here!" He touches his finger to the side of his nose and gives the younger man a wink. "But, we'll get this boondoggle sorted out... one way 'r 'nother!"

The Disc

Melodie casts her spell, and she is able to identify the disc in Methag's hands as a custom farspeaking amulet. The disc is linked with another similar disc, and the holder of one of the discs can cast sending to the person holding the other disc, once per day.

Clearly, Methag was trying to warn somebody about you last night, but Chailel stopped her.

Sir Keltus

The captain narrows his eyes at Chailel. " 'Respect them'?" he asks incredulously, "I'm not the one who broke into their temple in the middle of the night. It's good of you to be be willing to bear the consequences of that yourself, but the reality of the situation is that it's going to come down on my head. Perhaps I could have been clearer, but I was under the impression that I'd hired a team of professional investigators who understood this sort of thing.

"Nevermind: it's too late to argue over spilled milk. We'd better find out what that woman in the jail cell knows. Marnie will likely make an appearance here sometime today, as well; so be ready for that. I hear she led a loud protest outside Bishop Delcar's home last night to convince him to raise Lady Groak from the dead. I've not yet heard how that went. Marnie allowed us to hold the body in the morgue downstairs, in case you had reason to look at it again."

At the mention of looking at the body Griffen clears his throat.

"Having just arrived last night I have not had the opportunity to examine her body. I will go and that now, if someone can point me in the right direction."

Once he was led to the body he begins a preliminary look over her body, just scanning to see if anything catches his eye. Once that first pass was complete he really got to work, examining her body more closely going over ever inch of her body in every nook and cranny cataloging everything as he went along. In the end he ponders to himself. "So what have I gathered?"

Examining the Body

Sir Keltus has a man lead Griffen down to the morgue downstairs. Brianna can easily show Griffen what she's already observed: the wound on the neck looks consistent with an ettercap bite, and there is a second wound on the body, near the kidney, and it may have the egg of a parasitic outsider (a xill) inside it.

Griffen is not able to find the egg inside the body wound, but when he looks at the neck wound (which is supposedly an ettercap bite), he makes an observation: it's a dry bite (i.e., there's no poison). With that Knowledge (nature) check, he can't surmise how or why a spider bite would be dry, but the party can conclude from this that the neck bite almost certainly wasn't what killed Lady Groak: rather, the body wound was the lethal wound.

You also see that there are a few bits of spider silk wrapped around her body, but there's something odd about the placement of the silk. There's no real pattern to it: there's just a bit here, a bit there, with no obvious rhyme or reason, and it doesn't add up to anything functional. It's almost as if someone merely decorated her body with spider silk.

So, the evidence is (1) a dry, nonlethal spider bite, (2) meaningless bits of spider silk on her body, and (3) a lethal wound in a more cryptic location. It seems like somebody was trying to make it look like Lady Groak was killed by an ettercap, when she was actually killed by something else. But why?

As Griffen finishes up his investigation he gets a thoughtful look on his face as his mind goes over all the details he had learned. He heads back to the rest of the party and gave them his thoughts.

"So this is what I found. She had one wound consistent with a spider bite, however it was a dry wound without any venom in it so that would not be the wound that killed them. There was another wound that was hidden that I think is the one that killed them. The webbing that I found on their body, seemed more likely planted than naturally being there due to a spider attack."

He takes a deep breath before he continues. "So my conclusions are that someone wants us to believe that an ettercap had killed her while concealing the true killer, but why? Perhaps the one wound needs more consideration to see if we find anything else"

Brianna

spacer.pngJust then, Brianna suddenly looks like she's thought of something. "Sir Keltus, has anyone attempted to speak with Lady Groak's spirit? I cannot recall how common a spell it is, but my (admittedly limited) study into divine magic did mention at least one method that most any priest should be able to perform. Although it was admittedly fairly limited in scope."
