Griffen looks over to Sir Keltus and asked a question of his own. "Can you think of any group or person that would benefit from it being believed that an ettercap was responsible for Lady Groak's death?"

Sir Keltus sighs at Griffen's question. "They're not exactly popular in town," he says, "Extorting locals with a protection racket... if the locals didn't resist our operations in Penwyle, we might be able to do something about them. Instead, they simply accuse us of corruption. I know that Lady Groak herself had an altercation with the ettercaps yesterday or the day before: perhaps they simply made an easy scapegoat after that incident."

When Brianna asks about a speak with dead spell, there's a cautious, thoughtful expression on Sir Keltus's face. "I mentioned the matter to Marnie," he said, "She was, um... hesitant. Well, she believes she'll be able to get a raise dead spell from Bishop Delcar today or tomorrow, so she doesn't think it's necessary. Given her belligerent attitude last night, I didn't want to push the issue." He frowns for a moment. "Can any of you cast it? It's not my usual practice to suggest doing something like that behind someone's back, but... well, I do feel some pressure to get this solved. So, if you can cast it... well, on second thought, don't tell me. I think I have some paperwork upstairs to deal with. Excuse me."

Griffen looks around at his team. "Well I am no spell slinger, my skills reside in another area. Only speaking skill I can do is speak telepathically if I have to, but that does not help with the dead. It would be useful to get some answers, and she might be the only one to have them, I have gotten everything I can from her body alone, now perhaps her spirit can fill in the blanks. "

With Sir Keltus's exit, the old man pulls a chair up to the end of the table and settles in. "Given tha situation at hand, I can't rekon why Ms. Marnie would object ta speakin' with 'er sister's corpse... So long as it aint tha Telamon Gaurd doin' tha speakin' anyway..."

He gently presses his forehead against Lady Groak's cold brow. "But... jest in case... maybe one o' ya should step outside 'n keep a weather eye on tha hall... Keep 'er distracted fer a bit, if she does happen to come 'round early."

He begins the lengthy series of chants and whispers, guiding a fragment of his own spirit through the maze of her stilled neurons until it finds home in the remnants of her consciousness. The process complete, he sits upright and addresses the freshly animated face. "Ma'am. What did you seek via your business at the Chapel of Sora Karnel?"

Speak with Dead

Lady Groak's head turns disturbingly towards Chailel. Her lips move to speak words, but her face remains dead and nearly unmoving. "I know this spell," she says casually. A creepy cackle then emits from her mouth as her face remains emotionless and stiff. "I went to the Gray Chapel for spiritual guidance, of course. A public leader needs a religion. And yes, I knew about the hell hounds in the basement, but I was willing to overlook it: it's just a side racket, after all. Thriss was only peripherally involved in that business, anyway: and she was a good spiritual leader for me, because I can see in the dark."

Chailel can tell that Lady Groak is allowing the spell to animate her body, but she's not exactly compliant with the spell's compulsion: it seems like she'll respond however she pleases to your questions.

The old man gives a slight smirk as the body recognizes the magic, "I can't say I'm surprised..." but he quickly finds himself chewing his lip as he realizes that what's left of her personality is still fully in control of her words.

He takes a deep breath as he considers his options for his final question, "Well... I reckon that sounds like a delicate business... Though, ya outta know... them basement devils have a significant connection ta this here deed." He gestures vaguely down her body. "A bit more than a minor side racket...."

He lets out a long slow sigh. "Anywho... Our time here is comin' to a close, so further socializin'll have ta wait until yer sisters find a way to bring ya back, but I do have one final question. What are them Tokan Dor folks up to, that would make you a target fer their hostility.?"

Speak with Dead

Lady Groak's body takes a moment to answer that question. "Zaj'Durnakh is a perfectly valid religious philosophy," she replies in her creepy dead voice, with only her jaw bone moving up and down while the rest of her body remains as still as a corpse, "I might have chosen to subscribe to it myself, if it weren't for the local chapter's absolute buffoon of a leader, Narlvog Sorgchen. No good will come of his insistence on self-determination for his silly cult: the monster community has to be integrated into the governmental mechanisms of Port Callan in some way if we ever hope to truly have any sort of rights. Like it or not, we'll have to accept some reliance on the human community." The corpse scoffs in a stiff and inanimate way. "And the price of admission for his cult was too high. He might have resented my refusal. But I assure you, I was very polite about it."

At that point, she cackles a few times. The cackles cut off after a couple seconds, and she simply stops moving, with her mouth still wide open.

Chailel pulls the sheet back over the hag's face. "Sounds ta me like we've got the makin's o' some sorta rebellion brewin' here in Port Callan."

He shuffles toward the door. "Seems like this Narlvog feller has 'is own plans fer tha people o' Penwyle... And aint afraid o' violently puttin' down other influential folks who find 'em disagreeable."

He takes a deep breath and lets it out with a long sigh. "Whelp... Let's go have a chat with tha man. See if we can't talk some sense into 'im.

((So, you're wanting to go to the Temple of Tokan Dor and try to talk with Narlvog?))

He seems like the lynchpin of this whole situation thus far, so I think it's inevitable...

But, we can check up on other leads first if anyone has anything else they want to look into.

Temple of Tokan Dor

The streets of Penwyle are a bit more crowded in the morning hours. Goblinoid activity peaks around dusk and dawn, so you're probably coming close to the end of the activity cycle, and you can see goblins and hobgoblins scurrying about on their last errands before heading home for the midday rest. Other types of creatures fill the streets and mix with more "normal" humanoids.

But as you approach the Temple of Tokan Dor, activity seems to pick up again. There seem to be a large number of surly-looking hobgoblins gathering together around the temple. There are a lot of furtive, suspicious glances, a lot of challenges and a lot of angry shouts. They look like they might be mobilizing for some kind of group riot or other action, and there are plenty of weapons scattered among the crowd.

Clearly, your actions last night have not gone unnoticed. How do you want to approach this situation?
