The Destruction and Rescue Destinies will activate for 24 hours, beginning when you reach a new planet (and can thus make the most of the bonuses). I'll let you know when for certain.

Shade took the jar containing the organic chip and stared at it for a long moment. It's gone. They can't control me anymore. Rex was right - once you get the chip out of your head, it is like being born again. After a moment, a smile of joy and relief stretched across his face. He answered Nina, "I feel relieved. I'm finally, truly free of the Empire. Thank you, Remy. You're probably the best medical droid I've ever met." Taking the two yellow pills from Remy so he could take them, Shade carefully stood up. "So, where precisely are we? Is there someone in charge I should speak to?"

Well, even without the obedience chip, clones were still genetically predisposed towards following orders. Shade just had more free will over whose he could follow.

"You will be getting some rest, and then in the morning you might be allowed some light duties."
Something in REMY changes slightly as he looks down on the new Shade. "But rest can be a gentle stroll around the ship. We are on a Republic Nebulon-B frigate "Resurgence". Captain Adrian Verana, would be the most senior naval officer here, I am sure he will eventually call on you, now please get some rest"

"Nina, if you would be so kind as to escort Commander Shade to his allocated quarters, I need to recharge my internal batteries"
Remy looks as the two of them leave the med bay, their willingness to help each other, to provide support, leaves REMY with another strange feeling, one that he can not currently compute.

His thoughts fade as he steps into the recharge bay, computations of mushroom people living on that planet play across his heuristic cortex, as he counts the small herd creatures, his perception fades to black.

"Never been on a Nebulon-B before. Heard they were working on a new ship, though, before I left. Can't say I'm familiar with Captain Varana, either. Well, if rest is the order, then rest it will be. Nina, if you could show me the barracks, I'd appreciate it. Oh, and could we ask a crewman to get me a razor?"

The twi'lek hooked her elbow on the soldier's arm--to lead him and offer support if he needed it. She had no idea what it was like to recover from brain surgery, but didn't relish the prospect of explaining to Remy why she'd let Shade fall and hit his head.

Shade blinked. Were his ears not working correctly after having the chip removed? "No barracks? Where do the crew sleep? Wait - I have my own room? With just me in it?"

Shade was completely unfamiliar with the concept of having his own room. Ever since he'd left his growth cylinder, he'd shared a barracks with his brothers. Even after he deserted and fled to the Outer Rim, he had ended up in a tenement house that was mostly shared. The disbelief in voice was plainly evident. Then he remembered the rest of Nina's question and statement.

"Oh, um, yes, if you could pick up my gear as well as yours that would be nice. Let's, um, make sure I know where the refresher is, and then you can show me to my room."

OOC

I have just decided that Shade has no experience whatsoever with having his own room.

Zen gave Tetra a curious look then smirked "You been holding your own with the rest of us why would you think we don't appreciate or respect your ability?" He asked as he gave Tetra a light pat on his shoulder. He had meant it too. Takes a lot of skill and guts to charge into a fire fight with melee. He had seen first hand in his duties a few times when a weapon failed or someone got the drop on another. A blaster isn't any good on the floor or stuck in a holster or even in the rare occasion you run out of ammo. Zen couldn't remember an exact moment but he knew he himself had a few moments where it was his fists and brain against a killer with a blaster. He thumbed over his shoulder as he spoke once again "Come on show me where I'm rusty and maybe I can teach you a few old tricks." Though Zen might have only been a few years older than Tetra at the most he still felt like he was the old man of the group. "No wait, Shade" He chuckled as he started to make his way down the hall.

twilekfemale-the-hutt-copyright-law.jpg.f40c84c575f69d6e6970a1a2ec1ab6cc.jpgNina smiled at Shade's reaction to the thought of his own room. "If you're not accustomed to it, you may find sleeping alone quite an adjustment. As in, difficulty falling asleep."

She led him the the room and gave him time to take it all in. Rather than spoil the surprise, she'd decided to wait and let him discover for himself that his room had a private refresher. She seemed to take pleasure in his reaction to a private refresher.

"My room's directly across the hall. If I recall correctly, Tetra's room is just forward of you, and Zen is just rearward."

Guessing his need for the refresher, she added. "OK, I'm off to get our gear. After that, I can get you something to eat and drink--you haven't eaten anything solid in a while. I'll be back in a few. "

True to her word, Nina was back within fifteen minutes. Having already deposited her pack in her own room, she appeared at Shade's door carrying his pack.

With the pack stowed, she brought up the idea of food once again--along with several other options. "So, you want to get some rest, get a meal, be alone, join me in an adventure...?"

RC-9738 "Shade"

Reflex 20 (FF 16) | Fort 15 | Will 15 | DT 15 | HP: 43/43 | Init: +3 | Perception: +8 | Force Points 6/6 | Destiny Points 3 | Features | Conditions

Upon her return, Nina found Shade still staring, dumbfounded, at the refresher in his room. "It's just...here. In the room. No one else uses it. It's..."

The full reality of his situation really hit home to Shade, and he sat down heavily on the bed. I'm truly...on my own. I can do what I want. I can make my own way through the galaxy. Well, I'm still a clone deserter, so maybe not whatever I want, but still...it's just like Flex said. When the war was over, we'd find a place of our own where we could do farming or starship repair or...

He felt the emotions coming on and he said to Nina, "Give...give me an hour or so to rest up and then we can get some food. Food would be good."

He held himself together up until she left the room, then he curled up on the bed as the memories of his squad came flooding in - training, practical jokes, battles, and especially the quiet times. Listening to Flex talk about how they would be able to do whatever they wanted, on their own, once the war was over, while Overwatch carefully maintained his gear and Boomer came up with elaborate pranks to play on the regs. One in particular came in from Felucia, the night before they left for the raid on Shu Mai's supposed camp.

Memory

Boomer looked up from where he was welding battle droid heads onto a long metal bar. "Right, Flex, here's what I'm thinking. We put this bar into a pair of trestles, so that it can turn upright. Then, we set it up behind some crates, and tie a rope to it. We have Shade make some noise to draw some of the regs' attention, and then when they go to investigate, we pull the rope, causing the heads to pop up and scaring them into thinking it's an attack. They fire at the heads, realize what we did, and then we all have a good laugh. Sound like a plan?"

Overwatch rolled his eyes. "Boomer, are you seriously telling me you can't think of anything better to do with your time? We have a mission tomorrow, and you can bet Wraith Company isn't planning practical jokes right now."

Shade lifted his head from wear he was laying and chimed in, "Wraith Company probably isn't planning much of anything right now. Still, Boomer, Overwatch has a point. We're gonna capture one of the Separatist leaders tomorrow. Now isn't the time for pranks. How about it Flex? You've been quiet."

Flex had been sitting, staring quietly at the fusion lantern in the center of their campsite for several minutes. Shade's question seemed to stir him. "What do I think? I think the war is going to be over soon."

All three of the other clones looked at him in surprise. Shade said, "What do you mean? How is it going to be over soon?"

Flex answered, "Think about it. Shu Mai has fled here, to a planet covered in a mushroom jungle. The Separatists have been on the defensive for some time now. Even that recent attack on Coruscant that everyone's been talking about resulted in Dooku's death and no appreciable gain. We probably aren't the only ones closing in on the leadership's location. This war is going to be over soon. I know it."

Overwatch expressed, with some skepticism, "Even if it is, there's no reason for that to mean the end of combat The battle droids are still going to exist, and we're still going to have to clean them up. You aren't seriously thinking we're going to go buy a farm and stop being soldiers, are you?"

Flex replied, "It doesn't have to be a farm. It can be anything we want it to be. Without the leadership, the battle droids will be easy to clean up. They won't have any coordination, no strategy. They'll be easy pickings. Plus, factories will actually stay destroyed, since no one will pay to rebuild them. The Republic is on the brink of victory. Once they don't need us any more, we'll be free to do anything we want to do. We'll be able to have our own rooms, with our own refreshers, too. No more mess food or ration bars, either - we'll have real food for a change."

Shade shook his head. "I don't know, Flex. Seems pretty far-fetched to me. I don't know what we'd do without being soldiers. Still, speaking of refreshers, I've gotta go use ours." Standing, Shade headed off to the latrine, even as he heard Boomer ask, "Flex, do you think we could start a speeder demolition team? That'd be a ton of fun."

"Boomer, do you think of anything besides blowing stuff up or playing jokes?"

Shade barely noticed the tears streaming from his closed eyes, or the quiet sobs he made as he remembered the brothers he'd lost.

OOC

Shade's gonna have himself a little flashback for his PTSD now.

SteelNinaTwilekAIRendering.jpg.1089c325180bd0d6ae243f535ad674e5.jpgNina had almost laughed at the sight of Shade still staring at the refresher. Almost. But she was far too perceptive--the gravitas of the moment immediately overwhelming the humor. She set his things down quietly. She kept her face placid incase he looked to her, wishing not to embarrass him for his emotionality.

When he signaled his desire to be alone, she backed out of the room. "I'm just a comlink away if you need anything."

The door closed between them.

She returned about an hour and a quarter later. When he cue'd the door open, she did not immediately enter, instead pocking her head in the doorway. "Hungry yet?"

spacer.pngWalking down the hall toward Nina as she checked in on Shade again was former Imperial Admiral Gilder Varth. The very same man that, just a few days ago, was being starved and beaten on Felucia. Now he seemed to stand straighter and perhaps hold himself with more honor. He looked a man that had the weight of the world on his shoulders--moments away from releasing that burden.

"Excuse me," he called somewhat loudly in the hall even as a couple of mechanics made their way by to the mess hall. His eyes were locked on Nina stood halfway in and out of Shade's doorway. As he approached she could see he was wearing an outfit similar to what Adrian had been wearing; an Alderaanian ship officer's uniform in all its various tones of beige glory. Apparently this man's secret information was good enough to get him some perks with the rebels.

"You there, Twi'lek woman, you were there to break me out. I'd never forget you and that terrible shotgun," he said, seeming to mean terrible in the terrifying sense. "I never got the chance to thank any of you properly, let alone get your names." While his words seemed kind, his tone was no-nonsense as if there were no room for error or the galaxy might fall apart.

Gilder coughed to clear his throat awkwardly. "Yes, well, thank you. What is your name?" he said, genuinely embarrassed from the humility. His cheeks turned a touch red. He leaned a little to the right to look over her shoulder and see Shade. "And you there, soldier, what is your designa--ehm... What is your name?"

spacer.pngZen and Tetra found themselves strangely antsy after the last week of whirlwind action. While the others tended to each other, they'd decided to test each other's mettle via sparring. The first day had gone to Tetra, but the second day was a surprising defeat by Zen who got the upper hand at the last second.

The next time the two found themselves in a spare cargo room, they began to test reflexes. In what seemed like a heated battle between friends, Sirona stopped in her tracks as she passed by a window. She dropped her drink and pounded a fist on glasteel which made a very dull thud on the inside.

As the door opened with a whoosh, the woman shouted, "What in the wide world of pod-racing are you two doing?! Are ya trying to kill each other or... wait..."

Wiping a hand across her face, she continued rhetorically, "You'rrrrrre not actually fighting... are you?"

He'd stopped crying after half an hour, but he still lay there, recovering, getting himself back to equilibrium. Flex...Overwatch...Boomer...I wish you were all still here.

He was mostly back to himself when Nina knocked on his door. Taking a couple of deep breaths, he opened it and said, "Yes, I am hungry. Why don't you show me where the mess is." That's at least something normal.

Then the Admiral they'd rescued on Felucia came up to...thank them for doing so, and asking their names. Huh. Usually only the Jedi thanked clones after a mission. He even managed to ask for Shade's name as opposed to just his designation. Sure, he'd started to ask about the designation, but he at least deserved credit for trying.

"My name is Shade, sir. I'm glad we were able to get you out of that prison - although I don't know who actually sent the others to get you out."

Well, he was still a soldier - referring to an Admiral as "sir" probably wouldn't be going away any time soon.

They were interrupted by a loud "Excuse me" before they could set out for the mess. Nina turned to see the old man, Gilder Varth--she was good with names and faces. The surprise on her face was genuine--she'd thought the guy was on a one-way trip to an interrogation center. But it made sense, she quickly concluded: he'd likely already been turned when he'd been detained by the Empire. This was just a new way to work the asset.

She let Shade take the lead with the introductions. When he didn't introduce her, she jumped in, placing a hand on his forearm momentarily--to emphasize her words. "I'm Nina, and likewise glad to see you looking better. We were just heading to the mess for a meal. Care to join us?"

In their initial meeting, the old man had likely seen the twi'lek as a dangerous woman with a loaded weapon and trust issues. Now she carried no heavily upgraded slugthrower rifle, not even a side arm--though she still wore the survival knife at her hip. In this new setting the twi'lek seemed to radiate a confidence that cut through their differences in status and age. Indeed, when he looked into her eyes, he saw none of the deference he'd grown accustomed to over the years. She would not be "yes-sir"ing him anytime soon. And somehow, the hard-edged, even-keeled confidence he saw in those penetrating eyes was... disarmingly attractive.

Nina liked the idea of sitting down with Varth--to see what information she might wheedle out of him. She'd turned on the charm, hoping he might bite. But if he was busy, she preferred to end the encounter quickly and get Shade to his well-deserved meal.
