There are three visible bodies laying in the scrub grass, they all appear to be Human and wearing similar livery, maybe that of a local merchant house. Two dead horses are also nearby. There are broken crates and ripped burlap sacks scattered near the wagon. It appears that whoever attacked the wagon made a feeble attempt to burn in, bit only one wheel and adjacent sideboard have burn marks on it.

Ok, specifically what is everyone doing/ where are you going/ what are you looking at? No one's gotten too close yet... being cautious.

It'll take Arwi a bit to circle and gather clues, ill let him know what he finds after the others post up.

Kelarith picks his way carefully through the scrub toward the wreckage, an unusual expression partially concealed within the depths of his hood, "The ritual will be considerably easier if I have a live animal to sacrifice, to pierce the barrier between life and death." He looks at the wreckage and the bodies as he approaches, trying to get a sense of what might have happened. "I haven't had the pleasure of being engaged by highway robbers before, might anyone venture a guess as to what, precisely happened here?"

 


OOC

Kelarith is looking for the body with the largest number of visible wounds. He reasons that this will be the person that survived the attack the longest, and will know the most about what happened / who they were attacked by. He suspects that this person will also be the one that was strongest... for science purposes...

His plan is to get a good sense of the area, and then attempt a Summon Spirit (Gurps Magic p 150) ritual to call up the spirit and ask it what happened, who he and his friends are, and whatever else, anyone wants to know.

image.png.6309863b84e80b122f8ad8c59b8b6383.pngAs Arwi circles around looking for clues, Nessia, Snowbelle, and Kelarith examine the aftermath of the wagon ambush. Rindo, Amira, and Finn remain near the wagon on the road 15 yards away. There are clearly no survivors. Some of the individuals also have scorch marks on them, as if hit by some sort of flame, probably magical. One of the horses is impaled with a heavy spear, it looks as if this was the only wound this horse endured.

As he makes his way around, Arwi comes on the body of a dead Orc. The symbol of Iuz is painted on a shield strapped to his arm.

Kelarith settles on the Human nearest the wagon to try his magic on. The dead man is of Oeridian descent and has numerous cuts, bruises, and lacerations on him. The side of his face is burned and much of his hair has been burnt off. Behind him, Snowbelle moves to the other side of the wagon to see if anything valuable or useful was left behind. As she leans over, bracing her hand on the side of the wagon, she hears a collective gasp from Kelarith and Nessia.

The dead man laying in front of Kelarith opens its eyes and starts to move, reaching out with cold, dead hands toward the hooded figure. Nessia likewise, takes a step back when she sees the impaled dead horse shudder and start to climb to its feet.

Further off, away from the ambush, Arwi sees the Orc open its dead eyes and grit its teeth as it starts to pull itself up off the ground!

Amira curses and reaches for her crossbow as she sees the dead at the ambush start to stir.

Kelarith moves directly away from the zombie, reaching for the amulet within his cloak that will allow him to accelerate his ritual magic, 'Its just your luck, someone has already animated the corpse you wanted to animate. If you were a competent necromancer, maybe you could turn this to your advantage. Try to control it, you fool.'

Kelarith does a Move directly away from the zombie (turn to the N and book it straight in that direction the full amount, which I believe is actually only two yards after the turn, then turn to face the NW at the end of his move. Yes, he's facing away from the zombie). As he passes the end of the wagon, he scrapes up some ash from the burnt portion of the wreck.

Snowbelle frowns at Kelarith's suggestion of a live sacrifice and was just about to speak up to object when movement catches her eye. Looking away from the wagon where she had perhaps hoped to find a survivor huddled inside, her eyes widen in shock as she sees a man that she knows to be dead rise up. Reverting fully to barbarian mode, she lets out a cry of fear and fury as she steps over to the body and plants her spear in it.

The zombie makes a feeble attempt to avoid the strike, but Snowbelle's spear impales it easily. The creature seems unbothered by the spear in its side and continues its attempt to rise.

Arwi let out a harsh Elven curse. He was fairly certain that the orc had been dead only a moment before. Without thinking, he swung his axe at the orc and kept moving past his new undead friend.

The axe bites deeply into the neck of the rising zombie, but the undead menace keeps moving.


OCC: Swing axe at Orc's neck. All out attack (determined +4) axe 12+ 4 - 5 neck = 11

"WHOA." Nessia exclaims. She draws her staff, and thrusts at the once-magnificent beast -- the horse -- with its butt. She then backs away...

The staff misses its mark, but Nessia manages to put a little distance between herself and the rising zombie horse.

Mutters to himself about leaving well enough alone but at the same time he figures whats done is done and runs over to where zombie 1 is, but not so close as to be immediately within striking range. "We might as well flank em, they cant defend themselves from both sides should help make quicker work of em if we team up and tear em down."

It's the PCs turn again!

All the Zombies are on their knees and will no doubt use their next turn to be fully standing, though if there are any NEAR TARGETS (would have to be in close combat) they may attack from kneeling... then again, if anyone is within a yard, they COULD lunge out for an attack (and end up prone again)

Kelarith turns around, and seeing the zombie crawling towards Nessia, gives a frustrated groan, "You're going the wrong way, you stupid corpse!"

Taking the ash that he scraped from the burnt portion of wagon, he paints four vertical lines over his left eye, preparing to begin a magical ritual of some sort.

Kelarith uses the Ready maneuver to put four ashen lines over his eye, turning around to face the zombie as his Step.

Zombies are usually horribly disgusting and decayed undead abominations held together by profane magic. To Rindo, though, this zombie just looks like some beat-up fellow off the streets of Rookroost, in fact, this zombie looks like someone Rindo actually knows... or knew, at least. It is Vordrenar Hern, Vordie, from down in the Merchant District. He was a laborer for one of the Merchant Houses or something. They used to play cards and dice together from time to time. Good fellow, not so much anymore, though.

It happens that Rindo KNOWS this unfortunate fellow. I would like Rindo to make a Fright Check. That's a Will roll, but can't be over 13 after all modifiers. @terminaldragon
