But the beggar switched to common and she listened, giving him the benefit of the doubt as if he were not the homeless, crazy, addict he appeared to be. At his whisper, she nodded.

Remy spoke up, offering his services. Despite sometimes sounding like a tactician, he was still a medic. She decided he was right and that she would back him up.

To her companions, she said, "His intel checks out. We've seen horrible experiments to create super soldiers. We've learned of chips implanted in brains. It might be crazy-talk coincidence, but it might not."

Turning her attention back to the neimoidian, she affirmed her promise. "A deal's a deal, Nute. I'll take you to the cantina where we'll continue the conversation over drinks. But first, you've got to let our droid check you out. I'm not buying drinks if it's going to kill you."

Still sweeping the area for anyone looking at them, Jal switches back to common "Yeh, he says that no one believes him and that the Empire is out to get him." Addressing Nina separately in a side quiet voice "He also sounds a bit cracked... I'm not sure I believe him, but at least we can do is not draw too much attention to ourselves. I'm sure he isn't the only hungry one around... Lets see what he can tell us and blend in a bit more, the cantina might be a good start"

To the rest of his words, she replied sotto voce, "Agreed, we'll head to the cantina to be seen and overheard asking him general questions about the key factions and players, and buying him drinks. That's the kind of attention we want to draw--so that people in-the-know who trade in information will seek us out. Being new players in search of profitable opportunities will be a part of whatever cover story we develop."

Shade whispered, "I wouldn't suggest it. I know a thing or two about trauma from combat, and this is more than that. He's definitely suffering from some kind of mental illness. This is likely to be a massive waste of time. We have more important things to be doing."

spacer.pngWhile waiting for Nina's reply, the Neimoidian was bombarded by Remy's insistence. He took a step back but cleared his throat and said, "Yes, thank you! I agree! I'm Viceroy Nute Gunray, everyone used to know me! Now I'm nothing!" the man confidently lied. Remy had interacted with Nute during the war, albeit through holo messages. This man was not him. There were no code words, no hints, no subtle subtext. And while all Neimoidians might appear the same to other sentients, Remy knew better.

At Nina's confirmation of taking the man to the nearby cantina, he clasped his hands together and said, "Yes, please, it's just right there," he said pointing at a mostly intact building with minor damage. At its base was a storefront with glass windows flanking a doorway before three small steps. One window had been broken, boarded up, and covered in graffiti, indicating it was more of a permanent solution than not. Above the door in hand-written thick black paint lettering was Eto's.

A short walk later would put the group at the door to the cantina, the soft sounds of an electro-jazz band playing from a sound system that clearly had been ruined by loud bass long ago.

Stepping inside the shop would bring a pungent odor like burning plastic and paint thinner or pure alcohol. Accompanying it was a smoke that hung in the air like a fog. It wasn't unbearable but the old man didn't mind, instead wafting the air as if to intentionally smell more despite no visible nose. The door itself had hit a small bell that only clinked instead of ring, alerting everyone inside to the group's entrance.

The room was rectangular, leading lengthwise away from the door. On the left were two booths that had been covered in supplies, rubble, and trash. The main feature was the long bar that ran most of the room's length. Opposite the bar was a series of booths running the same length. At the back looked to be a wider area with movable tables and chairs as well as a jukebox. At the back was a small hallway as well as a door and window from the kitchen area.

Most patrons were Neimoidian but a few Rodians, Ubese, and Twi'leks were present. Most seemed poor and pedestrian with only one or two carrying visible weapons or a hint of armor. The bartender, a thicker-framed native man, looked at the group and said, "Looks like we got some fresh meat," to which the patrons laughed before going back to their business. The man motioned them inside. "So, I see you've met the Viceroy, eh?" he said with more of a grin than smile.

He chuckled, leaning into their predicament, "Is it our fault they all look alike? You miss every shot ya don't take, am I right?" Sticking to Nina's idea, Tetra motioned at the group, "But I bet you know where a group of skilled individuals could apply their trade."

As I thought. A waste of time. The bartender's reaction to their arrival with "the Viceroy" made it plain that the others had been suckered. Shade merely turned his attention back to scrutinizing the Nemoidian beggar who was suffering from some form of delusion - possibly along with being shellshocked by the fighting that had occurred here.

She'd accessorized her outfit with more color and bling: a brightly colored scarf adorned her neck, matched by a sash around her exposed waist, her feet shod in colorful feminine slippers fit for dancing, bangles riding her ankles, with a few more gracing one of her forearms. Across her back hung the two separate musical instrument cases. One contained her lectro yookoo'lele; the other, chuq-chuk with stock folded.

"Please excuse my friend," she offered smoothly, her voice like velvet. "His efforts at humor are often charming, but he sometimes read the room incorrectly."

She shot a sideways glance to the Viceroy. "But yes, we've met the Viceroy. I assume you keep him on retainer, given how persuasively he talked up your establishment and offered to lead us here." She spoke easily and comfortably, her banter conveying her awareness of the Viceroy's troubles.

Not interested in a public conversation with the bartender, she spotted an open table against a wall. She signaled to the others. So far, her patten on Felucia and afterward had been to signal her movements rather than attempt to lead the group--except when scouting. She guessed some or most of her companions would sit where they pleased and do their own thing. Too late, she realized she should have briefed them before entering the cantina, proposing a coordinated effort. Letting go self-deprecation, she acknowledged her limitations: she'd been trained to gather information, but to work independently. She new nothing about leading individuals such as these humans--not to mention the uncanny droid.

With a nod to the bartender, she gestured the Viceroy to follow and headed off to the vacant table.

Zen had followed in the back with Shade and Remy keeping his eyes moving across the scene. He had nearly bumped in Remy when he stopped at the entrance. As he turned slightly to check their rear he nudged Remy "What's the hold up Remy, something on your scanners?" Zen kept his hand near his blaster just not in a manner that seemed as if he was itching to reach for it. As he paused behind Remy waiting his left hand rummaged through his belt packs as if he was looking for something.

The Neimoidian bartender raised an eyebrow and stopped wiping down the bar to stare at Tetra for an uncomfortably-long moment. As Nina began to smooth things back over, the man went back to wiping and relaxed his face. "Yeah, I'll say. He's got a way with words," he replied with a cluck of his tongue.

Looking over at the beggar, the man said, "Not on retainer. More like, uhhh, symbiotic relationship. He usually gets a meal and I usually get customers. Nothing more to it than that." He sighed and called the only waitress over--another Neimoidian--telling her to get a number four with extra gravy for the Viceroy.

Seeing Zen and Remy waiting at the entrance, the bar tender sighed again. "Well are you coming or going? Don't just stand in the doorway!" he said, motioning them inside.

Sitting down at a large semi-circle booth, the Viceroy found himself in the middle and unable to get away. To one side Nina, Shade, and Tetra, to the other Jal, and the late arriving Zen and Remy.

"Thank you, again," he said in the awkward silence before the waitress wandered up. "Yours is on it's way honey. Here are some menus, take your time and I'll be right back," she said as she put once-gawdy, now marred and partially burned laminated menus. It was a one-sheet menu with a handful of meager meals and appetizers, with a drink list on the back.

Understanding that he was not going to contribute to the profits of this establishment, and was taking up seating space, Remy thought to put his skills to use whilst the others selected their nutritional needs.

Next, he steered the conversation towards the economy, a fertile ground for discovering undercurrents of significant operations. "We're always looking to understand the local economy better. What goods or services are most in demand here?" This question was designed to sniff out any unusual trade patterns or demands that could be indirectly linked to the Hutt's interests or the Sarlacc Project, all under the guise of a general interest in the planet's economy.

Lastly, Remy touched on the topic of local legends and influential figures in a manner that seemed to feed the 'Viceroy’s' ego for storytelling. "Every place has its legends. Are there any local figures or organizations people often talk about respectfully or cautiously?" This cleverly veiled question aimed to identify power players and factions within Cato Neimoidia's complex societal landscape, potentially leading to insights into Darga the Hutt’s operations, all while appearing to merely indulge in the lore and gossip of the locale. Through this line of questioning, Remy maintained a facade of mere curiosity, all while meticulously fishing for details that could serve their mission.

Taking a seat that gave him the best view of the main entrance and most of the visible area, while keeping his back close to a wall or gave him the best chance to dive for cover. Even if it meant flipping over a nearby table. He ignored most of the usual types that frequent these place keeping an eye on the more rougher patrons.

 

The place like so many he had been to before was a dichotomy to him. On one side it was the type of place he knew dangerous thing could happen in the blink of an eye yet on the other it was also a place he felt comfortable in even if he did look uncomfortable. The smells, smoke, and dankness he could stand even though it was an affront to his senses. Some places are well lit up others are dark enough that all manner of crimes can go on without barely being noticed. This place was somewhere in the middle.

He took time from in between glancing at the door and watching the area to people watch the inhabitants of this place. You never really knew but sometimes an individual would stand out as a possible informant. Maybe someone who is paying more attention to you than anyone else. Another possible subject might be someone like a user who might turn over information for a quick fix. Then again there just might be a quality person in the female form whom he could charm things from or himself into.

 


OOC Zen is going to be checking for anyone who might seem dangerous. Also someone who might be helpful given the right form of persuasion
