"These doors are fascinating. The thickness of the walls, but they must be hollow. So how does it keep from buckling or warping?" She ran her fingers along the seams of where she hypothesized the door must enter the wall. Understanding the principle, it was really a sandwiched version of a sliding barn door. But it seemed to sit on a track instead of hang from one. "Could we pry them open? We would need to provide lateral force which would be rather more difficult...." Keshka realized she was rambling and stepped back a little reluctantly, making room for the others.

Black Hill Caves — Ruined Pen / Strange Machines

spacer.png"Well the stuff is made of Glaucite, so you gotta think it's probably pretty sturdy to begin with." Val commented as she knelt close to the little slot, fishing out a small wrap of thieves' tools to start trying to unlock the door. After a couple of moments, she exclaims in surprise, "Hey wait, this thing isn't locked!"

 

Further eastward, inside the chamber beyond the wide open doorway, two strange machines sit to the north and south against the walls, their faces appear similar to coils of metal tubes with several nozzle-like protrusions pointing into the room itself. Beyond that, another set of doors open to a stone tunnel that curves north, partially obstructed by a white, coral-like piece of rock.

"Can you get it open, Val," Vri asked, "otherwise I think we're best with moving on. That spell will only last so long."

If Val can open the door, she will be ready. If not, then she would follow Barhuce.

spacer.png"Ungh..." Standing up, Val tried to push the door open, making her best effort to try to slide the door panel horizontally into the wall, but it seems like no matter how hard she tries the door just wouldn't budge.

 

"Ugh! I give up!" Frustrated at having absolutely no luck with the door, Val stomps off toward the stone cavern ahead of Barhuce, and hoofs the coral-like piece of rock some hard with her boot.

 

All of a sudden, a dozen or so purple tentacles erupt from the rock formation, some of which rapidly wrap around Val's ankles. Realizing too late, Val lets out a shrill, high-pitched scream.

"What in the... what is that? Val! " Whatever it was, it seemed intent on eating Val, and probably the rest of them too.

"There's no room, urgh!" She moved to the side to get out of the way a little then pulled out her long spear and stabbed at the thing through the doorway.

"Now that is not expected." Keshka's tone barely hid her relief at something unexpected but with a known solution coming up. She pulled out her bow and knocked an arrow aiming it at the place where the tentacle emerged from the rock. It was thickest there and she was unlikely to hit Val.

"AaaaAAhh! Get off me!" Val quickly scooched her feet away, wresting with the mess of writhing tentacles coming toward her and trying to secure their grip, managing to fling just enough away to get free. Finding herself backed up against the cavern wall however, the young woman takes a breath and pulls her pistol to defend herself. Though as soon as her boots touch the sand again, they're drenched in a gritty pool of sticky substance, immediately rendering it difficult for her to escape, her shoe's being gummed up in this mess of slimy… whatever it is… "What the heck‽"


Keshka's arrow strikes true at the base of one of the strange creature's tentacles, the slithering thing snapping back into its calciferous carapace.

 

Barhuce's bomb smashes the rear of the creature's rock-like shell, splashing some acrid substance at the writhing tendrils. A couple more of the appendages snap back silently into the protective shell, a sour whiff of smoke escaping from the orifice in their place.

 

Vri and T'Sarra put up a valiant effort, but both end up missing in their preliminary attacks.

 

Rushing forward just behind the half-elf, Violet pointed the muzzle of her blunderbuss at the creature where the other two had successfully hit, and pulled the trigger. A loud report sounds and the bullet tears through some of the thing's flesh, making yet another tentacle retreat into the safety of its coral-like shelter.

 

Spontaneously, the mass of tentacles whips around, missing several of the others clean, but one slams against Barhuce's core, smacking him right in the false ribs.
