Lulani's smile slowly grew as Mags slid up to her and asked to see the scroll, devilish glee flickered in her eyes as she saw an opportunity to mess with him. "Mmmm~? You wanna peek hmmm?~ How bad do you wanna look? What are you gonna give me in return?" , she purrs in his ear.

Lulani leaned in and purred into his ear.

When he'd sidled up to her, he'd kept slightly behind her, so that her hair covered his view of her face. And with good reason. He had met her eyes only once--upon their first meeting--and that had been more than enough to leave him tongue-tied. So, for the third of an hour he'd known her, he'd resisted letting his gaze linger upon the woman.

In his short lifetime of travel across the empires and kingdoms of the Serene Holds, Mags had encountered many exceptionally... attractive women. Lulani had joined their ranks.

And so, he'd prepared himself for her to turn and face him--locking his eyes on the prophetic scroll of moving pictures in anticipation. But he'd not been prepared for...

He felt stray strands of her platinum hair brush his ear, her breath on his neck, the heat of her nearness. He smelled her sent--clean like a sea breeze blowing over earthy femininity. Her words came in a lulling purr of intimacy. He knew she was saying something, but he couldn't quite make it out. He recognized the sounds, but they were just beyond his reach.

He turned to look at her lips, thinking that might help.

And suddenly, their lips were nearly touching.

His eyes went wide as he took in her big blue-green eyes and his predicament.  Like a cat, he sprang away from her with a swallowed yelp. It was an impressive backward leap and his landing was equally catlike.

He lowered his gaze from her eyes and found himself staring at... His face reddened and he lowered his gaze further, to her feet.

"Sorry," he said lamely. "Ah, didn't quite catch what you were saying?"

He took a deep centering breath, trying to remember why he'd approached her.

  • Silvery Barbs1st-level enchantment

You magically distract the triggering creature and turn its momentary uncertainty into encouragement for another creature. The triggering creature must reroll the d20 and use the lower roll.

You can then choose a different creature you can see within range (you can choose yourself). The chosen creature has advantage on the next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw it makes within 1 minute. A creature can be empowered by only one use of this spell at a time.

Spell Save DC: 12 | Spell Attack Mod: +4

Cantrips Booming BladeEvocation cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self (5-foot radius)
Components: S, M (a melee weapon worth at least 1 sp)
Duration: 1 round

You brandish the weapon used in the spell's casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack's normal effects and then becomes sheathed in booming energy until the start of your next turn. If the target willingly moves 5 feet or more before then, the target takes 1d8 thunder damage, and the spell ends.

Both damage rolls increase by 1d8 at 11th level (2d8 and 3d8) and again at 17th level (3d8 and 4d8).
 | Mage HandConjuration cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: 1 minute

A spectral, floating hand appears at a point you choose within range. The hand lasts for the duration or until you dismiss it as an action. The hand vanishes if it is ever more than 30 feet away from you or if you cast this spell again.

You can use your action to control the hand. You can use the hand to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial. You can move the hand up to 30 feet each time you use it.

The hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.
 | MessageTransmutation cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 120 feet
Components: V, S, M (a short piece of copper wire)
Duration: 1 round

You point your finger toward a creature within range and whisper a message. The target (and only the target) hears the message and can reply in a whisper that only you can hear.

You can cast this spell through solid objects if you are familiar with the target and know it is beyond the barrier. Magical silence, 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood blocks the spell. The spell doesn't have to follow a straight line and can travel freely around corners or through openings.
 | Minor IllusionIllusion cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: S, M (a bit of fleece)
Duration: 1 minute

You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again.

If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.

If you create an image of an object—such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest—it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature.
| PrestidigitationTransmutation cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 10 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Up to 1 hour

This spell is a minor magical trick that novice spellcasters use for practice. You create one of the following magical effects within range:

>You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor.
>You instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.
>You instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.
>You chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.
>You make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.
>You create a nonmagical trinket or an illusory image that can fit in your hand and that lasts until the end of your next turn.

If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have up to three of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.

Spells Disguise Self1st-level illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: 1 hour

You make yourself—including your clothing, armor, weapons, and other belongings on your person—look different until the spell ends or until you use your action to dismiss it. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller and can appear thin, fat, or in between. You can't change your body type, so you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs. Otherwise, the extent of the illusion is up to you.

The changes wrought by this spell fail to hold up to physical inspection. For example, if you use this spell to add a hat to your outfit, objects pass through the hat, and anyone who touches it would feel nothing or would feel your head and hair. If you use this spell to appear thinner than you are, the hand of someone who reaches out to touch you would bump into you while it was seemingly still in midair.

To discern that you are disguised, a creature can use its action to inspect your appearance and must succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC.
| Find FamiliarCasting Time: 1 hour
Range: 10 feet
Components: V, S, M (10 gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs that must be consumed by fire in a brass brazier)
Duration: Instantaneous

You gain the service of a familiar, a spirit that takes an animal form you choose: bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the familiar has the statistics of the chosen form, though it is a celestial, fey, or fiend (your choice) instead of a beast.

Additional animal form choices may be available at the DM's discretion.

Your familiar acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it rolls its own initiative and acts on its own turn. A familiar can't attack, but it can take other actions as normal.

When the familiar drops to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical form. It reappears after you cast this spell again. As an action, you can temporarily dismiss the familiar to a pocket dimension. Alternatively, you can dismiss it forever. As an action while it is temporarily dismissed, you can cause it to reappear in any unoccupied space within 30 feet of you. Whenever the familiar drops to 0 hit points or disappears into the pocket dimension, it leaves behind in its space anything it was wearing or carrying.

While your familiar is within 100 feet of you, you can communicate with it telepathically. Additionally, as an action, you can see through your familiar's eyes and hear what it hears until the start of your next turn, gaining the benefits of any special senses that the familiar has. During this time, you are deaf and blind with regard to your own senses.

You can't have more than one familiar at a time. If you cast this spell while you already have a familiar, you instead cause it to adopt a new form. Choose one of the forms from the above list. Your familiar transforms into the chosen creature.

Finally, when you cast a spell with a range of touch, your familiar can deliver the spell as if it had cast the spell. Your familiar must be within 100 feet of you, and it must use its reaction to deliver the spell when you cast it. If the spell requires an attack roll, you use your attack modifier for the roll.
| Mage Armor1st-level abjuration
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a piece of cured leather)
Duration: 8 hours

You touch a willing creature who isn't wearing armor, and a protective magical force surrounds it until the spell ends. The target's base AC becomes 13 + its Dexterity modifier. The spell ends if the target dons armor or if you dismiss the spell as an action.
 |
Silvery Barbs1st-level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when a creature you can see within 60 feet of yourself succeeds on an attack roll, an ability check, or a saving throw
Range: 60 feet
Components: V
Duration: Instantaneous

You magically distract the triggering creature and turn its momentary uncertainty into encouragement for another creature. The triggering creature must reroll the d20 and use the lower roll.

You can then choose a different creature you can see within range (you can choose yourself). The chosen creature has advantage on the next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw it makes within 1 minute. A creature can be empowered by only one use of this spell at a time.

Rituals Augury2nd-level divination (ritual)
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Self
Components: V, S, M (specially marked sticks, bones, or similar tokens worth at least 25 gp)
Duration: Instantaneous

By casting gem-inlaid sticks, rolling dragon bones, laying out ornate cards, or employing some other divining tool, you receive an omen from an otherworldly entity about the results of a specific course of action that you plan to take within the next 30 minutes. The DM chooses from the following possible omens:

>Weal, for good results
>Woe, for bad results
>Weal and woe, for both good and bad results
>Nothing, for results that aren't especially good or bad

The spell doesn't take into account any possible circumstances that might change the outcome, such as the casting of additional spells or the loss or gain of a companion.

If you cast the spell two or more times before completing your next long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get a random reading. The DM makes this roll in secret.

Mags Kategaris - Itinerant Hedge Wizard Mags_token_200.png.d3596c7994956f551d31c29deaf69122.png

AC: 14 (17with Mage Armor)  | HP: 30/30 | Initiative: +4Oracular Insight (I'll often use this for important initiative checks)
"The gods give you flashes of insight that help you bring your efforts to fruition. When you make an ability check, you can roll a d10 and add the number rolled to the check. Passive Perception: 17 | Spell Slots 0/2 (1st)

His memory jogged by her offer, Mags accepted the scroll without meeting Lulani's eyes. He shifted away, slowly this time. He felt stupid, but tried not to show it. He did not relish the what lay ahead of him--traveling and working with these women. His thoughts turned to Serysh and he found himself lamenting the loss even though they'd never met.

Opening the scroll, he read it and felt renewed despair. The Oracle of Thespoe, THE Oracle of Thospoe had only twenty-one words for the heroes who would save the Serene Holds and the world? A brief, vague message that told only when and where the superior forces arrayed against them would begin their work of world destruction.

From distant memory, the Master's words came to him. Truth? Sense? Oracles don't speak truth, boy. They don't make sense. They speak the words of Gods, bound by rules, playing an unfathomable game. Sometimes they speak clearly, other times in riddles. Sometimes they speak truth, sometimes they lie, and sometimes they simply tell you what you need to hear.

Stupid gods.

There was much to support the Master's cynical view of the Gods. And yet, Mags knew from experience that at least some of the Gods cared about mortals, and acted out of compassion to aid them. Still, one aspect of the Master's views, on the whole, seemed accurate: the Gods eschewed war in their realm while playing at war with their mortal pawns. And this bothered Mags profoundly.

Putting greater distance between himself and the triton, Mags drew his dagger, concealed beneath his cloak, and softly spoke the arcane words of a spell. "Min yma."

And then he mouthed voiceless words that only Dae could hear--gently whispered in her ear. "The note says: The Serene turns to Smolder and the World to ruin. It starts at the Akropoli when the moons overtake the sun."

And then he repeated the process, recasting the simple message spell, his words magically carried to Damaia's ear. "The note says: The Serene turns to Smolder and the World to ruin. It starts at the Akropoli when the moons overtake the sun."

Dae was still curious if this Oracle had been the one to summon them with nightmares, but she let the question linger in the air. Deypho might have chosen to not answer it. So much was happening.

As Mags message comes to her ear, it commands her attention. Her chin moved with a start and her eyes slid around the room until she realized who it was. She didn't know the spell, but was familiar with it. Her grandfather had used it to speak to her in the few moments he could during their darker days together. Such painfully few words, stitched together, to tell her a story, to give her some light in the darkness. He had been going to teach her the spell... someday.

Composing her thoughts, Dae whispered back to Mags. "That's it? Could there be... something hidden?"

Dae closed her eyes, not wanting to look, but having to. She pulled back her cloak and pushed the sleeves of her green tunic up to reveal her forearms. There on her inner wrist, a fox, glowing, yellow. She whinced as if it was painful. Meddling gods...

After a significant pause, in which Mags communicated the note's contents to Damaia, Dae heard his whispered reply. "That's just what I thought. I'll examine it. Join me if you like, or I can pass it to you when I'm done with it."

He didn't want to sound pushy, but he also didn't want Dae to leave the group. Such a choice would likely lead to her death. And what would it do for the group's chances of success if she left. He knew he would get flustered around his little violin maker, but he had to keep inviting her--he could think of nothing better to do.

The Master had once tested Mags with a question from nowhere--not something covered in the Master's lessons, just something he'd wanted Mags to think about. What do you suppose is the strongest means of motivating cooperation among social creatures? he'd asked. The Master did this kind of thing quite a bit. Mags would get one answer per day, and only seven days to come up with the correct answer. A twelve-year-old Mags had spent the next several days of travel thinking and providing daily answers such as fear, love, mutual survival, and resources. On the seventh day, the Master had given him the answer. Belonging. People joined by a sense of belonging are capable of the most incredible cooperation, commitment and achievement.

Billie, Lu, and Dam seemed to easily accept that they were heroes in the making, destined for greatness in an apocalyptic battle to save the world. They readily accepted that they belonged in this group. Mags had to smile at the thought of such hubris. Then again, they were the prophesied ones, so perhaps it wasn't hubris.

Dae, however, seemingly lacked such a conviction and didn't feel she belonged. Mags suspected she didn't belong anywhere. Like him, she was a rolling stone. She would need at least one friend, one connection in this group. That would be her first step to a sense of belonging.

As for himself, Mags was an oracle. He'd been seeing visions since childhood. It was easy for him to accept the idea that he was part of a prophecy, because he'd already been involved in many prophecies--albeit prophecies on a much smaller scale. And of course, he'd seen visions of the destruction to come and his efforts to aid and chronicle the efforts of the four who would save the world.

A thought struck him and he made a mental to note to review his vision journal for signs of Serysh.

Mags turned his attention back to the note and examined it for any further information.

🎵 Theme 🎵

PART 1:
A GATHERING OF WANDERERS

"Eclipse? I'm not sure but it should be soon." Wilhelmina's rambling caused a retort from Deypho. "This "sliver" is a piece of a very powerful artifact," She said sucking her teeth. "I would request not disrespecting the gods on their holy grounds. Cause for bad luck." She said dismissing Billie's wildness. Deypho was about to move before Dae called out to her, asking another question.

"Nightmares? I ensure you that neither I nor the Oracle has such powers. Someone, or something, has been giving you these visions." Deypho said as she eyed the auburn-haired girl. She couldn't help but notice how unsure she looked, Deypho wished she had more answers. These sorts of things were never transparent, this much she knew firsthand.

"The marks, yes. uh," Deypho gathered herself "They're indicators, symbols given to us by the divine's to give us our roles." She said in passing, her head perked up when Lulani asked about the Oracle. "You very well could, she is in Thespoe. A few days travel southeast." Deypho paused looking at Billie, she could feel the need to roll her eyes but held back. She adjusted her clothes and then sat up "As I said, it made itself. It all just appeared one day five years ago. Yes, Serysh is no longer shown and his name is crossed out." She said pointing to the crossed-out name. "I've only seen it change twice. Once when Serysh died, and the other when the Shadowy One's army appeared. I believe it changes whenever either side gets closer to reaching their goal." Deypho said before looking to Damaia, she noticed some eyes had drifted to the sliver.

"It is a piece of an artifact known to be able to control the will of others," She said fearing their attention was slipping and so stood to lead them out. No sooner had Deypho stood so did the shard, standing on a jagged point it slowly turned and pointed toward Lulani. The sliver shook with intensity as if connected with some unseen tether. "I've never seen it do that, Lu what do you have?" Deypho asked a sense of fear layered into her voice.

She shook her head, "Luck is for gamblers and fishermen.  I do and say what I want." As if that was a cue, she began rolling up the picture scroll, to stuff it in her bag. "We can discuss whether we head to Despoe after some food, but I'm done here... I'll be down the javelin throwing spot, grab me on your way down, ya?"

You can wait until after you roll the d20 before deciding to add the d10, but you must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest."
Passive Perception: 17 | Spell Slots 0/2 (1st)

"Dae and Mags, I owe you a meal for you letting Valyv take yours.  Least I can do and I'm not taking no for an answer, I pay my debts, and my dog's."

It took an act of will, and his hedge wizard face, but Mags caught Billie's eye and accepted her offer with a polite nod of gratitude. He found it easier to meet her gaze if he thought of her as that girl who fought in the streets.

Mags listened to Deypho's answers deep in thought. One answer in particular prompted him to speak up.

"When the Shadowy One's army appeared?" he quoted. "Do you mean appeared on the map or do you refer to some real-world event?"

Mags approached the triton priestess and the sliver of metal. "So, how is this item supposed to help us?"

In view of Deypho and the others, he produced the small jewelry box, placing it on the table to inspect it more closely. He also produced his needle-nosed pliers, which he placed on the table next to the box and sliver. His efforts seemed to suggest that any of the others were free to join in his investigation.

Later, during an appropriate pause in the conversation, Mags showed Deypho the signet ring he'd found among the orc's remains. "The leaders of the chained ones wore these. Do you recognize the sign?"

RP Continuity Notes

1. Thought I'd responded to Billie earlier offer, but my post must have been eaten by MW. Given the value Mags places on being polite, and possibly his fear of offending Billie, I thought it was worth it to throw in his reaction--which I kept to a minimum so that it would not require a response from Billie.

2. Not sure if Dae will accept Mags' invitation to help him examine the note, so I left it "open." Ariel, if Dae does not accept Mags invitation, feel free to assume that Mags passes the note to her via the invisible hand--to avoid more giggles from Lu and Billie.

Dae Dae

AC: 13 | HP: 27/27 | Spells: 4/4, 1/2 | Sorrowful fate: 1/1 | Protection from good/evil 0/1 | Inspiration: 1/4 | Passive Perception: 14 | Condition: Normal

If the Oracle hadn't sent the nightmares, then who did? Siarus himself? It would make some sense with Death greeting them.

Dae pulled down the sleeves of her tunic and folder her arms into her cloak. The fox was there, but she didn't have to look at it. The parchment from Mags arcane hand floated in front of her and she took it, deftly. She glanced down at the words. It's in Halaen... hardly meant for me... but I guess that's the mother tongue of the Oracle who wrote it, right?

Still, she knew what it said because Mags had told her. The Serene turns to Smolder and the World to ruin. It starts at the Akropoli when the moons overtake the sun. She played the words over in her mind wondering why the Oracle hadn't squeezed a few more words into their missive. Could it be some kind of eclipse as Lulani suggested?

Dae took two steps forward, both to better hear Deypho's answer to Mags questions and to see the sliver that had captured the triton's attention in turning a jagged end toward Lulani. She could feel the metal's pull.

Green eyes moving from the fair elf to the tiefling, Dae addressed Damaia, offering the parchment as she asked, "The Spear of Varaxis... I'm not sure I've heard that tale? Can you tell us more?"

She took one more step and addressed Deypho as well, following Mags questions about the "Shadowy One's Army". "The Chained Ones are part of this army then? I remember a story about a mercenary group, experts in fighting the undead... wiped out by their leader who betrayed them. I thought the souls we met today were them... but it sounds like there are many more. Does the name "Thiovanya" mean anything to you?"

She things for a moment, curling her fingers around one of her horns and letting her hand hang "I do not know much about the spear itself. But the Battle of Eternal Fires was the climactic conflict of the Corrupter versus. Archon Thalysios fought the Corrupter, he eventually reigned victorious."

"In the end of the battle, spears of light descended from Siopos and destroyed much of the enemy armour and its foul creatures. That is when Thalysios fought and killed the Corrupter."

Dae nodded to Damaia. She looked down, unkempt hair falling further onto her face which held a thoughtful expression. "Right, of course, I've only heard the tale in orcish...  in Anthropoi, when Archon Thalysios defeated the Corruptor with a golden spear... through his heart..." She hesitated, then whispered Damaia's words, "... the Spear of Varaxis shattered a black wrought artifact."

She froze, like a deer having spotted the hunter first. She looked from the tiefling and to Deypho and back. "It couldn't be... you're not suggesting... that this shard is from the Corruptor's heart? What then of the metal slivers taken from The Chained Ones?"

"Eclipse? I'm not sure but it should be soon." The words felt like they landed on Lulani like a great weight. Even with all her confidence, she had hoped for more time.

She looked at the shard on the table again and licked her lips, the promises it made making it even more tempting to touch. Lulani jerked as she heard her name, helping to pull her out of the trance. She looks to her backpack, sighs, and fishes in it for the piece of cloth that contained the ring and sliver (in which I haven't really understood what it was until now. thought it was a chain or something.) She put the piece of cloth down on the table, close to the other shard, and opened it up. "This came off of the grey-skinned guy... I had a hunch they were connected and was going to take it out anyway." The warlock licked her lips again. So close to the shard, she could just brush up against it. She was sure the only thing keeping her from doing so was thinking of the chains. If they were connected this shard likely meant she would become one of them and possibly under someone... or somethings control. Or give me the power to control. Her eyes lingered on the shards. She wanted to see what the other was going to do before doing anything else.

"What are you?" , her question more of a whisper and directed towards the artifact.
