Fire in the Woods

The Party

Ez swiftly shoots an arrow in front of the running creature, and it pulls up in surprise, looking back to see who's shooting at it. It makes a mean, hissing noise.

You get a good look at it here. It's clearly a fire elemental of some sort, with a squat, lumpy sort of build (if that even makes sense for a creature made of ephemeral flames). The edges of its form seem rather indistinct, and the air around it seems distorted and waving with heat, making it hard to tell exactly where it's standing.

Gregory anticipates some aggression from the creature and prepares for it to come closer.

HooGrawr hurries out to the middle of the meadow, ready for a fight of her own.

Kildrak

Kildrak rushes northwards to engage the thing in combat.

Talissa

The fire nymph gets a look at the creature. "That's a grue!" she says, "Dshalvur uses those as scouts sometimes. They'll probably report back that they've seen us! We should stop them!"

She mounts up on her flame horse and starts riding after Grue A (the horse will just act on Talissa's Initiative count).

Ride

You can tell that Talissa isn't a very experienced rider: she knows how to do it, but she's not getting the best performance and Chee doesn't seem very keen to rush into combat.

(Okay, you're chasing it right off the map, then! Grue A is running, so it moved 120 feet, putting it 165 feet from your current position. You can:

  1. move 50 feet (ending 115 feet from it) and shoot it with your bow or cast a spell at it (it loses Dex to AC because it's running).
  2. double move 100 feet, ending 65 feet away from it.
  3. use the run action (losing your own Dex to AC), and catch all the way up to it.

Gothika

Gothika flies rapidly after the fleeing grue, and nearly catches up with it.

Grues

Fire Grue A sees Gothika approach and hisses angrily at her. She's still too high in the air for it to do anything to her, so it continues fleeing (Run 160 ft).

Grue B hears Kildrak yelling and sneers at him, pivoting to run towards him. When it closes to within 20 feet, it stretches out its arm, and a spray of flames fans out from its hand, covering Kildrak and a section of the woods.

Fire Spray (this is a spell-like ability; Ref DC 12 for half)

A few bits of brush and foliage catch fire, but conditions aren't too dry, so these fires might not spread very far.

He’s not real tall, is he? That’s actually good right now.

 

Years of experience on the patrol had given Ez a sense for where an ally was likely to move. He fired a pair of arrows over Kildrak at the flame creature, hoping to quickly put it down.

The flames licked at him, but the shield held firm with hardly a scorch remaining. Gritting his teeth, Kildrak bellowed, "Let our hammers ring!" before barreling forth and slamming his weapon down upon the grue.

Unfortunately, having been out of practice for a while, the dwarf's hammer completely misses, making a fine dent in the dirt instead.

I forgot to account for the +2 racial bonus against spell-like abilities, so Kildrak narrowly makes the saving throw! That, combined with his Resist Energy, he takes no damage from the attack. He then follows up with an attack of his own, at a -2 because of the tower shield.

The Party

Gregory hurls some magic missiles at Grue B. The missiles both strike home, momentarily disrupting the grue's flaming body.

Ez takes a couple shots with his bow. One shot goes wide, but the second shot seems to be on target. It's a little hard to see, because the creature's body flickers and waves, and the air around it is distorted with heat waves.

Miss on 1

His second arrow stabs into the grue, causing it to shriek and shudder in pain.

Kildrak is able to avoid the grue's fire spray, and he closes in to attack. However, the grue is nimble and evades his attack.

Talissa

Talissa tries to control her flame horse again.

Ride

Chee (the horse) really doesn't like what's happening here, and Talissa is really not a very good rider. But, the horse is hurrying off in the direction of the fire grue.

((Oops! HooGrawr still hasn't gone. My bad! Well, I guess Talissa is going out of turn here.))
