Chapter 5 — An Invitation You Can't Refuse

Torch — Silverdisk Hall

Following suit with Vri, the other player doubled down while also asking for a split, placing down another three silverdisks for his ante.

Once the decision has been made, the dealer placed a Four of Stone, and an Ace of Stone, making one of her hands a blackjack. The other player received a Seven of Flesh and an Ace of Flesh, making one of his hands also a blackjack. Seeing this and her own lack of a face up card that would constitute a blackjack, the dealer pays out the two winning hands two silverdisk and four gold before handling the rest.

Turning to Vri first to her hand valuing fourteen, the halfling asks, "Hit or stand?"

Blackjack Rules

Each player puts down a bet (limit 50 silverdisks) to be dealt in. The dealer then shuffles the deck, and deals one clockwise round of cards face up to each player, then one face down card to himself. One more round of face up cards are then dealt around the table.

Aces are counted as either 1 or 11, face cards as 10. The player’s goal is to beat the dealer by getting a count closer to, but without going over 21.

If the dealer has an ace or a “10” card face up at this point, he looks at his face down card.

A hand with an ace and a “10” card is called Blackjack. If a player has a blackjack and the dealer does not, the player is immediately paid out 6 to 5.

If the dealer has blackjack, he collects the bets of all players without.

If both a player and the dealer have blackjack, the player’s bet is returned.

Clockwise beginning from the dealer’s left, each player resolves their hand by playing it out against the dealer. She may “stand” (ask not to be dealt any more cards) on her total, or “hit” (ask for another card) up until she goes “bust” (count totals over 21), in which case the player loses her wagered bets.

A player may split an initial pair into two separate hands by placing down an equal amount to the original bet for the second hand. These hands are then resolved separately. Additional pairs dealt when making up the split may be resplit again.

A player may also “double down” on their original bet, doubling their wagered amount. A player may double after a split.

No other side bets are permitted. A player may “fold” and surrender their wager at any time.

After every player on the table has been served, the dealer turns up their face down card. He then deals additional cards to himself until his total is 17 or more. The dealer may not fold, split or double, and must stand on a soft 17 (a hand that counts to either 7 or 17 due to having an ace).

spacer.pngWith no bets raised and both the players playing it safe, the dealer reveals the Foreign Trader (Int, N) for the other player, forming him a pair, and the Trumpet (Con, LG) for Barhuce to confirm his atonement.

"Pair for you, and wow, an atonement! Good job!" The dealer expressed her surprise as she hands out the winnings and collects the cards.

spacer.png"What's the news around town?" Barhuce asks as the redhead reshuffles again, "Is anyone making heads or tails about the illnesses and the garbage?"

"Well I heard that the town council's got the guard working all hours to haul garbage off somewhere east of town, no?" The previously unsociable dealer started talking as she shuffles the cards in her deck. "And while we're talking about the council, word is, that mechanical creature councillor Baine found under the hill? I hear that's not the only one."

"Some people are saying that there's others just like it, and they've been crawling out of the ground and attacking people around town!"

Fortuna Rules

Each player antes 1 silverdisk as a minimum bet on the table to be dealt in. The dealer then shuffles the deck and deals each player two cards face up, at which point the player has the opportunity to stay, raise their bet (up to a maximum of 50 silverdisk), or fold.

After all bets have been laid, the dealer then deals each player their final face up card.

Pairs with matching alignment are paid out even money (1 to 1), Spreads (three cards forming a straight line along one alignment axis, such as LG, NG, CG) pay out 2 to 1, Choosing (all cards belonging to the same ability suit) at 3 to 1, Atonement (three cards forming a diagonal line across the alignment grid) pays out 4 to 1, Crusade (3 of a kind in the same alignment) 6 to 1, and Chosen Spread (spreads with the same ability suit) pays 8 to 1.

After winning bets are paid and losing wagers are collected, a new round begins.

spacer.png"Wow, that's a powerful one, she's a natural. Sometimes I wish I could sing like that. But I think the birds would die if I try." The bartender acknowledged the raw seductiveness in the music as she topped up Keshka's glass, then turned toward T'Sarra, "How about you dear, need a top up?"

[[ Third Burlesque Number ]]

The haunting tune continued to an aloof and almost ghostly dance given by the performers, each one still teasing up a hem here, or working a strap there all in fluid motions as the elf continues to sing

"The tree-lined avenue /
Begins to fade from view /
Drowning past regrets /
In tea and cigarettes

But I can't seem to forget /
When you came along

Ingenue…"

At long length, the song faded down to the refrain above the background vocals, "Ingenue / I just don't know what to do…"

spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png

A stunning applause is heard as the dancers finally come to a stop, the lights dying down around them for a protracted moment as they catch their breath.

"Thank you. We have one more song for you, you've been so good to us." One of the dancers announces as the spotlights return, the other girls busying themselves at getting ready for their final piece.

"Your skill seems far more practical, and much more likely to win you friends." Keshka groaned and rested her head on her palms, elbows planted on the bar. "Singing never stops does it? How do you put up with it?"

T'Sarra looked at Keshka and shrugged, not feeling the same call, not even sensing it.

"Yeah, she's alright I guess. Definitely puts some thoughts in a girls head," she glanced back to the entrance to see if the bouncer was still standing there, wondering exactly what she'd look like swaying to this music. Misplacing the pull Keshka felt with something more carnal.

"We can go if it's getting to you Keshka. I'd better stop anyways, Abigail. Work tomorrow bright and early. Thanks though. I got two more silverdisks burning a hole in my pocket, suppose it'd be rude to leave without taking a final bet. But the wheel was not my friend. Bad wheel! What's your favorite game, Abigail? For a girl to put her last two silverdisks and still come out a winner?"

Boldness apparently paid off, Vri thought as she took the gold silverdisks and put them in a pocket, before looking at the other hand.

"Hit, please," she said. Now she started to see why people found this so intoxicating. That's why she put the four gold disks away, so she wouldn't gamble those. If she lost everything else, she at least would still have those.

Vri is next dealt a King of Iron for her hit, resulting in a total of twenty-four for her remaining hand, "Twenty-four, bust."

Seeing this, the other player stands on his seventeen, trying to play conservatively. The dealer flips up her face down card revealing a Six of Flesh for a value of eleven, then draws one more card which turns up to be the Seven of Stone, bringing the dealer's total to eighteen, which beats the other player's hand by one point.

"The luck!" He exclaims in some surprise, scratching his head.

spacer.png"Yeah we're pretty lucky to have these girls every week, they're so amazing." The bartender paid some honest lip service to the performers on stage as she made some small talk, but then cupped her chin in serious contemplation for a moment before answering T'Sarra's question, "Well you know, my favourite games gotta be Banca Galta, Blackjack and Risk. That's just me though, don't know if that counts for anything."

A brief moment passes before the low, electrifying bass twang of a string instrument leads the rhythmic tzchsss of a pair of cymbals being snared together, loudly building up the troupe's final song.

"There's a place by the woods,
Up on the hill /
Looking over at the liffey /
It's hidden away,
A secret den /
Just up from Blackpipe villy

A house of sin and debauchery
For many a year gone by /
Women, drinkin', gamblin',
Or anything you might try

Oh, welcome to the Hellfire Club…
The Hell~fire~ Club!"

The last performer breaks into a fast and arousing lyric, belting the words from her lips at full volume when she reaches the chorus, to the background of her whole troupe throwing off items of clothing and tossing them at the audience.

T'Sarra looked at Abigail to Keshka then back again and announced, "Alright screw it, let's get out of this hellfire club in a blaze of glory. Banca Galta, blackjack and risk sound promising but the wheel is what I know and it's what hurt me, so I'm going back for one more try." She stood up with her two last discs and moved back to the wheel, putting them both on the Wagon with a satisfied smirk, pretending she knew what she was doing. The longest odds, the biggest payout. Let's see what's meant to be here.

"Alright wheel, one last chance. Come to T'Sarra!"

"Bets down everyone." The croupier calls and after a moment's wait, she grabs onto the edge of the wheel and pulls down with her entire body to spin it.

A clack-clack-clack sounds as dowels on the wheel strike against a flapper mounted at the top of the stand, eventually slowing the wheel down till it stops at the Thrush.

"The thrush!" The croupier calls, paying the player out six silverdisks to his one.

Cosmic Caravan Rules

Each player bets any amount on one or more of the segments of the wheel (minimum 1 silverdisk per space). The croupier then spins the wheel, which is slowed via the rubbing of the pins against the “arrow”, a mounted pointer made of flexible leather until the wheel comes to a stop.

Any player who has stakes on the segment stopping at the arrow wins double the payout indicated below, granted the segment is white, green, red or blue.

If a player has otherwise placed bets on the same colour as the winning segment, she is paid out as indicated. (White: 1 to 1, Green: 2 to 1, Red and Blue: 3 to 1, Brown: 7 to 1.)

If a player has placed bets on a red or blue segment, and the opposite colour is stopped at the arrow, that player is paid a consolation prize of half the amount of her bet.

If the wheel stops at the Follower (Black), all wagers are lost to the house.

After the winnings are paid out appropriately, all losing bets are collected before a new round begins.

spacer.pngFor the next hand, Vri is dealt a Nine of Stone and a Ten of Flesh. The other player, having decided to mimic the half-elf and stay with his two silverdisk ante, is given first a Jack of Stone then a Five of Flesh, against the dealer's Four of Flesh.

Though no pairs to split this time, the hand looks positive for Vri so far.

spacer.png"I don't know actually, that's just hearsay." The redhead admitted before going back to dealing the next hand, placing the Joke (CG, Int) and the Queen Mother (LN, Wis) to the other player, and the Locksmith (LN, Dex) and the Crows (NE, Dex) to Barhuce.

[[ Final Burlesque Number ]]

With a force of strength behind her voice, the lead singer carries the music forward as she and her girls continue to dance, clapping in tune to the next part of the lyrics for effect.

"The story goes, that on one night /
A game of cards was played
(clap clap!)
A knock on the door, and entered in /
A man of wealth in spades
(clap clap!)
He stayed and played one hell of a game /
But when one card fell loose /
Upon bending down, a player saw /
The stranger's feet were hooves

Oh, welcome to the Hellfire Club / the Hellfire Club!"

Between verses, the electric sound of the music does a bit of a boogie woogie, as the troupe continues displaying a varacrobatic tricks and provocative poses, almost contorting their bodies on occasion as they go through the song.

"The devil's at the head of the table /
Don't run 'cause you won't be able /
If you enter, you'll never leave /
Your soul, you'll never retrieve!"

Keshka

"And all was right with the world." Keshka gave a little bow of her head in farewell to the croupier and hooked her arm in T'Sarra's ready to leave. "T'Sarra, have you figured out what line you want to use or is the plan to stammer and blush again?"

T'Sarra swore at losing her last two silverdiscs, but if it was meant to be... something like that. She frowned at Keshka not understanding until it dawned on her.

"What? Stammer and blush.. .oh HER! Ah well honestly it's a case more of admiration than attraction. I mean look at her, don't you want to be her when you grow up? But yeah ok I'd be lying if I wasn't curious what ... the whole package looks like. But come on, I've experienced enough defeat and humiliation tonight. Don't think I could handle losing at love too! Although, I mean it doesn't look like they're done quite yet, and I don't want to leave them here just the two of them. And she probably gets bored standing there just watching all aloof and ... chisled. " She moved arm in arm with Keshka towards the door and the bouncer.

"So? Any words of advise for a giant loser? I don't know if you guys keep records for who can lose their stake the fastest, but I think I'd be in the running."

"I'll hold this time," Vri said. A 19 wasn't bad and while it could be defeated, that would need some luck. While the other player and the dealer were doing their thing, she looked around a bit to see where the others were and what was going on in the establishment.

Torch — Silverdisk Hall

spacer.png"The lady stands at nineteen." The dealer looks over to the next player, who seeing a mediocre hand decides he would hit.

Luck would have it that he is then dealt a King of Flesh, which brings his hand's total to twenty-five. "Player busts."

The dealer then flips over her face down card, revealing a Queen of Clay. As this did not bring her hand's value to seventeen, she draws herself another card, revealing a Four of Clay. "Dealer has eighteen. The lady wins."

Once again, Vri is paid out a total of two silverdisks and four gold pieces for her win.

Dealer Hand

 spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

The dealer may not fold, split or double, and must stand on a soft 17 (a hand that counts to either 7 or 17 due to having an ace).

spacer.png"Huh. You sound like someone who might have some experience in the thing." The redhead said as she acknowledged the raised wager before she went back to dealing.

The next cards came up as the Twins (N, Cha) for the other player, then, perhaps distracted by the music, she paused for a moment as she looked sideways, before flipping up the Forge (NG, Str) for Barhuce.

"Well, at least you got a pair." She comments to him after, sliding over three silverdisks with a wink.

[[ Final Burlesque Number ]]

spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png

The last verse stirred up some mixed responses, with some of the patrons loudly cheering and laughing at the possibility that there might be devils amongst them gambling at the tables, and others gasping in shock while the odd one or two amongst them actually tried to covertly look underneath their respective tables for evidence.

"Another one goes that a farmer boy /
Went to sneak a peak
(clap clap!)
Curiosity got a hold of him /
And his self-control was weak
(clap clap!)
He was found and suddenly dragged inside /
And when he reappeared
His hair was white /
With the fright, he was deaf and dumb with fear!

Oh, welcome to the Hellfire Club / the Hellfire Club!
I said, yeah, welcome to the Hellfire Club, the Hellfire Club!"

As the verse told the tale of some unknown horrors that struck a deathly fear upon the unnamed farmer boy, the girls displayed their most deprived dance moves, each inevitably crawling forward across the stage lustfully, the others wantonly grinding against one another with their clothes scattered across the stage, leaving the powerful lead performer still firmly on her feet.

And yet as they proceed into the song's finale, the lyrics being belted out at the top of her lungs, even she rips off whatever scanty coverings she still has on, throwing them one piece at a time at her audience.

"Fais ce que tu voudras /
They said, do what you want!
Fais ce que tu voudras /
At the HELL!
(Whoooof!) FIRE! (Whiizzz!) CLUB! (Bang!)"

spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png

The last three syllables were marked with the small bang of a pyrotechnic burst, the patterns of light and sound exploding full force at your senses. When a moment later the puffs of smoke dissipates into little thin wisps, there is only the one sole performer alone on the stage, the rest of her troupe is nowhere to be seen.

Bending over to gather a single piece of lingerie from the stage in front of her, she takes a bow while cleverly covering her chest with one arm, and winks to the audience. "Thank you very much! Please come see us at the Marrymaid, we're be there all week!"

spacer.png

spacer.pngAt the door, the bouncer and another guard were watching the show just like everybody else. The Silverdisk Hall's attendance seems to have steadied for the time being and she looks to have been able to afford a short break.

Shifting her attention back to the tiefling now in front of her, she responds, saying to T'Sarra, "Well I'm not seeing someone else wearing the shirt off your back. Obviously you're not trying hard enough. Doesn't count."

Though she shook her head with the rebuke, a grin underscored the fact that she was obviously joking.
