Chapter 5 — An Invitation You Can't Refuse

Torch — Silverdisk Hall

Despite the state of the remainder of the town, the immediate area around this building seems to be rather well kept, the street corner here being clear of garbage, and lights of different colours streaming out softly from inside the windows brightening the mood and amplifying the excitement of anyone here about to get in to the gambling hall.

spacer.png

The bouncer at the door, a beautiful yet muscular blonde smiled at the tiefling, took a quick glance at the note and shrugged as she stepped aside, "You might wanna keep that close to your body till you get to the cashier. Have a good time."

As she opens the door, an intensely moving rhythm of music spills out from within the space inside, potent enough to give you hair-raising goosebumps. This just undertones an entreaty to excite the senses, as splashes of colours and lights, the flight of cards and the rhythmic riffle of them being shuffled, the sound of dice hitting a felted table. The clack-clack-clack of a spoked wheel being spun, all reach out to you from within.

"It's very simple, as long as we don't use more money than what they give us, we can't really lose anything," she said as the arrived at the building, "So if you lose that, just stop and you should be fine. As long as you don't go too deep in debt, they won't do anything to you or they wouldn't keep any customers."

At the entrance, Vri let T'Sarra do the talking for now, keeping a bit back and looking around for any trouble.

T'Sarra did a double take at the sight of the bouncer, then another. It wasn't often that the tiefling was tongue tied, but all she could stammer back at the bouncer was a weak, "Uh huh, close to your body." She was happy her skin was already quite red so nobody could see how much she was blushing.

On the way in she regained some composure. She nudged Keshka and laughed, "Now I know what I want to be when I grow up!"

She looked over the various games and tables, not sure what any of them were.

"So uh, anybody know how to actually gamble? Not something I've spent a lot of time on. Throwing the square rocks looks like it could be fun!" She stepped towards a dice table and smiled awkwardly, having no idea what to do next.

spacer.pngThe very slightest dip of her head forward, combined by an overt flash of one eyebrow rising and falling, was all that preceeded the lady bouncer's gaze overtly scanning the tiefling's body.

As the group of you walk past the bouncer to get inside, she places a hand on Barhuce's shoulder and leans close, whispering, "Ya might wanna keep a nice close eye on your lady friend. Plenty of grubby hands around, if you know what I mean."

With that she returns her glance to T'Sarra's backside, lingering there appreciatively without even trying to hide it.

Once inside, T'Sarra takes the lead in perusing the games at the various tables. It seems like a pretty even split between games played with dice, and with cards, there's even one where people bet on a large spinning wheel.

Among the dice games, there looks to be a couple of games where the dealer does the dice throwing and the players bet on various sections at the table, and a couple others the players are involved in throwing as well.

Besides the players hovering around the tables and the dealers and croupiers busily promoting and running their games, a handful of scantily clad servers in provocative costumes are bustling around bringing food and drink.

Keshka

Keshka had to make an effort make sure her jaw didn't hang as she stared at everything going on. She honestly hadn't been back since the night she had wasted all her money. Enough gold to have bought a fancy new bow, that waste still hurt. But with free money? What did she have to lose.

"I want to try Cosmic Caravan.... or Fortuna. I don't trust dice."

She guided T'Sarra over to the cashier's cage, keeping a half step behind her to make sure she was unbothered. "Just don't trust anyone, they crack down on thieves but it doesn't stop people from trying."

T'Sarra felt a little shiver go through her when she realized the bouncer was still looking at her ass. She tried her best not to focus on it! She barely noticed the 'bunny girls' flitting around but seemed to glance back to the door every few minutes, just for an instant. But come on, focus on the games!

She followed Keshka to get disks and nodded.

"Sure. Gotta start somewhere. Let's try the Cosmic Caravan. Hope you don't mind if I tag along. Barhuce and Vri too maybe? Might be good to stick together in here."

"It's been a while since I was here," Vri said to Barhuce as they moved to the cashier. When she got her 'chips' she looked around for something to do. She ignored the machines and drifted over to the card tables where she had a look to see what exactly was played and how it was played.

Torch — Silverdisk Hall

[[ Music currently playing ]]

Making your way to the cashier's cage, you line up behind a couple of other patrons as they are being helped. It doesn't take very long for it to be your turn, and after some initial surprise the cashier promptly counts you each a sum of five plain silverdisks and one that's been painted in a red enamel.

spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png spacer.png

spacer.pngAs the cashier, an elven woman with very prominently pointed ears, handed out the counted chips, a male voice with an alto quality speaks up behind you, "Well if it isn't our town's new saviours!"

"Welcome, welcome!" As you turn to the source, you see that the voice belongs to a man with a full beard and sparkling eyes, no doubt the proprietor of the place. "My friends, you honour me with your visit to my humble establishment. Please, have a round of refreshments on me."

"I would show you around the place myself, but I've got some urgent business to take care of." He explains before you can get a word in edgewise, though as he does, the female members of your group feel that he's practically undressing you with his gaze. "Best of luck with your games and your future endeavours."

Excusing himself with a gesture, he raises his voice over the clammour of the place, declaring with a sweep of his arm toward your group, "The heroes of Torch, everyone!"

With a good proportion of the gambling hall's attention now on you, you manage to navigate yourselves to the game tables amid cheers and requests to shake hands, and a couple of servers now flocking to get your order for drinks.

Making her rounds between tables, Vri notices that there are two distinctly different games being played with cards. One is played with a regular card deck, whereas the other is a game that uses the harrow deck.

spacer.png"All the way from Varisia, it's the Coooooooooooosmic CARAVAN! The more the wheel spins, spins, spins, the more you win, win, win!” At the Cosmic Caravan table, a busty croupier with luscious blonde hair actively advertises her game.

spacer.png

Mounted on top of the table next to the crouper is a large wagon wheel that is easily twenty-five to thirty inches in diameter, with thirteen coloured sections, each with a graphical depiction of the stellar constellations of the zodiac.

spacer.png

The two other players at the table are then seen betting on a various sections of the table, its felt surface similiarly designed to the wheel. One is seen putting a small stack of chips on the Stargazer, whereas the other is splitting his bet between the Patriarch and the Newlyweds.

"Bets down everyone." The croupier calls and after a moment's confirmation that nobody else was laying down any more last minute wagers, she grabs onto the edge of the wheel and pulls down with her entire body to spin it.

A clack-clack-clack sounds as dowels on the wheel strike against a flapper mounted at the top of the stand, eventually slowing the wheel down till it stops at the Stranger.

"Aww, better luck next round gentlemen." The croupier consols the players as she collects the losing bets.

Cosmic Caravan Rules

Each player bets any amount on one or more of the segments of the wheel (minimum 1 silverdisk per space). The croupier then spins the wheel, which is slowed via the rubbing of the pins against the “arrow”, a mounted pointer made of flexible leather until the wheel comes to a stop.

Any player who has stakes on the segment stopping at the arrow wins double the payout indicated below, granted the segment is white, green, red or blue.

If a player has otherwise placed bets on the same colour as the winning segment, she is paid out as indicated. (White: 1 to 1, Green: 2 to 1, Red and Blue: 3 to 1, Brown: 7 to 1.)

If a player has placed bets on a red or blue segment, and the opposite colour is stopped at the arrow, that player is paid a consolation prize of half the amount of her bet.

If the wheel stops at the Follower (Black), all wagers are lost to the house.

After the winnings are paid out appropriately, all losing bets are collected before a new round begins.

T'Sarra smiled at the man who had to be Gareth when he came up behind them.

"We haven't saved squat yet. You would think a gambler would know not to jinx it like that! Best of luck with your, erm, urgent business."

She added to Keshka when he was out of earshot, "Whatever her name is. OK so the Cosmic Caravan. Time to get lucky, right? Erm, so to speak."

She looked at the table then put two discs on Stargazer.

"Paid off once, maybe it'll pay off again, right?"

Keshka

KeshkaPortrait.png.c5a8b8226b763306509344da12ab2897.png

Right, that was the other reason she had stopped going. Keshka tried to shrink down, using the height of T'Sarra to hide behind. Attention usually lead to questions and questions made things awkward. Or she did... It didn't really matter either way.

She examined the wheel and put a silver disk down on the Daughter and the Wagon. "You know that isn't how luck works right? But it also isn't how it doesn't." Not that she was expecting any of this money to leave with them. Especially not with the new attention.

Between rounds, one of the patrons leans over towards Keshka in an attempt to make some conversation, "So, these androids living here in your town, they're harmless, right? Mostly?"

spacer.pngComing to a game table with a familiar game being played, Vri takes a seat in front of an attractive halfling card dealer, where there is currently one other player seated in the middle of a playing round.

The player has three silverdisks down as his initial ante, and the dealer is in the middle of dealing a round of cards.

The player is first dealt a King of Flesh, then the dealer deals herself a face down card. Next, the player is dealt an Ace of Flesh, before the dealer's gets a Six of Stone.

Player Hand

spacer.pngspacer.png
spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

Dealer Hand

spacer.pngspacer.png

"Blackjack!" the player exclaims.

"Player has blackjack. Player wins." Seeing that she has no matching card hand, the patron is paid out three silverdisks plus six gold, in addition to his original ante being returned.

Blackjack Rules

Each player puts down a bet (limit 50 silverdisks) to be dealt in. The dealer then shuffles the deck, and deals one clockwise round of cards face up to each player, then one face down card to himself. One more round of face up cards are then dealt around the table.

Aces are counted as either 1 or 11, face cards as 10. The player’s goal is to beat the dealer by getting a count closer to, but without going over 21.

If the dealer has an ace or a “10” card face up at this point, he looks at his face down card.

A hand with an ace and a “10” card is called Blackjack. If a player has a blackjack and the dealer does not, the player is immediately paid out 6 to 5.

If the dealer has blackjack, he collects the bets of all players without.

If both a player and the dealer have blackjack, the player’s bet is returned.

Clockwise beginning from the dealer’s left, each player resolves their hand by playing it out against the dealer. She may “stand” (ask not to be dealt any more cards) on her total, or “hit” (ask for another card) up until she goes “bust” (count totals over 21), in which case the player loses her wagered bets.

A player may split an initial pair into two separate hands by placing down an equal amount to the original bet for the second hand. These hands are then resolved separately. Additional pairs dealt when making up the split may be resplit again.

A player may also “double down” on their original bet, doubling their wagered amount. A player may double after a split.

No other side bets are permitted. A player may “fold” and surrender their wager at any time.

After every player on the table has been served, the dealer turns up their face down card. He then deals additional cards to himself until his total is 17 or more. The dealer may not fold, split or double, and must stand on a soft 17 (a hand that counts to either 7 or 17 due to having an ace).

Keshka jumped a bit at the sudden hug but then relaxed realizing it was T'Sarra. She gave the younger woman a grin. "Even more fun when it isn't my money I am planning to lose!" She slid one of the silverdisks into a side pocket, putting the other two back on the table in their former positions on the Daughter and the Wagon. She quickly scanned the room to see if anyone was paying more than the average amount of attention to them.

Unlike T'Sarra she acknowledged the question, responding with a shrug. "I've never gotten into a fight with one. Knew one who could cut your ego to shreds though. Where you from that you ask?"
