The Big House

With the Big House aired out, light streaming in from all directions.. the decision is taken to finish off the ghouls and their ghast leader. The house is then searched from top to bottom. Neither ghoul nor ghast is to be found. However, a vertical shaft, dug in the north eastern corner of the building, is discovered. At the bottom of this shaft is a pool of dark motionless water.

Heva follows the others into the manor expecting a major. Worse they found nothing, but a huge shaft to some hidden caverns beneath the village. She walks over to the shaft and glances down to gauge the depth of the well. After looking at it, she comments.

"We should fortify one or two of the other buildings for shelter. Building a secure cover for this shaft, and replacing all of the shutters will take some time. Until then, we cannot consider this building safe.

Father de' Fatale stands ready with his loaded light crossbow when the shuttered windows of the house are opened and the smoke dissipates, however no counteraction occurs.  

Then, according to the plan and before the group enters the structure, the holy man weaves a series of cantrips ensuring that every individual has the 'Guidance' of the gods, as well as divine 'Resistance.'

Nonetheless, all seemed for naught as the house was searched from top to bottom with no Ghouls to be found, until a vertical shaft with water at the bottom is located in the north-eastern corner of the manor house.

After comparing the approximate depth of the shaft to the water line to the height of the ceiling and trying to determine if the dig is fresh or happened days ago, Raziel quietly backs off and whispers to his colleagues, "Well, unfortunately they are diggers and apparently dug below the local waterline!"

"Fighting in or underwater is extremely dangerous since it's difficult to move and fight," the minster adds.  "However, I can summon a Seaweed Leshy which grant four people the ability to breathe water as air for ten minutes, if we determine such is needed."

"Furthermore, the Leshy can swim forward and possibly attack once before it returns to the Plane of Water," the padre discloses.  "Does anyone have a way to remotely explore under the water before we do anything else?"

"We don't know how long ago this shaft was dug.  It might have been dug when the village fell to create an underground lair for these foul creatures," the cleric suggests.  "Given their recent strategies, I would also expect a series of traps down under as well."

"Plus, since we don't know how extensive the lair might be, it might be a good idea to put the other survivors who are armed on alert since the Ghouls could theoretically emerge through hidden holes virtually any place in the area where they could have dug to over time," Raziel says with a frown.

Ed tends to agree with everyone's assessments upon discovering the shaft. Better to block it off for now, and any other such passages and begin exploring it the following day if everyone is healthy.

"Somehow the dead being underground feels quite a bit better than living next door," he comments.

Ed sets to gathering whatever salvageable wood and nails and iron bars that remain of the broken shutters and doorway and starts a stockpile in one of the rooms in the big house.

"Shouldn't be too hard to repair these windows sufficiently before nightfall if I can get a couple hands. We might add some arrow loops in them too or else carve a few out of the walls."

Ed begins exploring around the village for more nails, tools and any extra lumber he can find as well as anything that seems of use and begins hauling that over to the main house as well.

The shaft isnt very deep at the point where it enters the water.. only twenty feet. How much further it goes down is anyone's guess.

Much of what might be considered lumber was used to construct the barricade in the big house. There's not much in the way of metal.. The smithy seems to be the sole repository of metal, which when one thinks about its guardian is hardly surprising.

As the others started searching the house, Theo called out an airy susurrus, check to see if his elemental was still around to report. He'd lost track of time during the period of the windows being broken open, which meant it wasn't likely, but it wasn't quite outside the realm of possibility.

When the hole was discovered, he paused, and went to look. It was, by all accounts, not ideal. Still, if the water down there was clean water - which wasn't necessarily likely, with ghouls swimming through it, it could serve as an emergency well in pinch. Turning on his heel, he headed back outside, looking for Vosh's wife.
"Girt, if we can get you materials, would you be able to make Alchemical Cement or Mimic Fibers?"
Some things he could make himself, but time was ticking, and there was never enough to begin with.

Cannibalizing boards from the huts outside the useless rudimentary walls of the place secures enough planks to seal off the vertical shaft in the Big House as well allowing for windows to be boarded up again.

Girt is confident she can make alchemical cement, but rather less confident with mimic fibres.

With regards the Big House the lower floor with the exception of shaft room is unsuitable for habitation at present. It's foul, verminous and odiferous.

Snow found herself washed ashore. The journey would have been the stuff of nightmares for ordinary folk, but aside from the taste of salt in her mouth and being soaking wet she found herself to be little the worse for wear.

She appeared to be on a sunny beach. There was various detritus, as from a shipwreck around her. Looking further afield, she could see a column of smoke rising from somewhere to the south east. It was difficult to tell just how far away it was, but at least it seemed like civilisation.

Torren goes to the villagers. He says, "Alright, it looks like the rest of the village is safe. Get some rest, but nobody go alone, even to use the can. Stay out of the big house for now. When we're able, we'll clean it and make it safe for use. I really appreciate everyone who is here. I know we've been through the wringer the past couple of days, but we've got to work together if we're going to make a go of this. I'm Torren, by the way. Torren Grimstad. If you need anything let me know. I'll do what I can." He goes and picks a hut and strips off his armor and gear and gets to work.

"Alright, I'll see if we can rustle up some materials. Be good to have a sturdy option for building or foundations."
Nodding gratitude at Girt, and again at Vosh, Theo turned back toward the manor, pausing a moment to call out to the more heavily armored folks present.
"Perhaps someone would like to double check the second floor? Make sure they didn't try leaving a large blatant hole while they hid upstairs again. And since Edwin's decided he's got better things to do, let's get that focus destroyed."
Pausing a moment longer to see if anything else would occur to him, or if anyone had a response, the elf eventually made his way back to the manor, setting about on the long, long task of prestidigitating the place clean. Though seeming somewhat unsociable, he was happy to chat with anyone who came by as he worked, answering questions or helping out as best he was able.

Actions

Cast Prestidigitation repeatedly to start cleaning the manor - if anyone wants it cast on them to clean off the salt, he'll do that too.

Pleased with the cleaning and repair work being done to the Big House, Ed takes some time to wander about the compound, checking for useful goods, tools, and of course any remaining dangers.

He carries a torch in one hand and his sword in the other, checking each structure thoroughly.

Bugler comes along and Ed has him sniff at each door first prior to opening them up.

(If no problems arise Ed will widen his search to include buildings outside of the wall as well as eventually making his way over toward the mysterious mound by the peach blossoms... Approaching slowly and cautiously)

The half-elf soldier watched and listened, seemingly passively, to all the planning and commands being given or offered.

He removed his helm, revealing sweat and ocean water drenched hair. He tucked it under his arm and took in his surroundings. What an absolute insane day this had been. Here, abandoned with strangers. He looked to hold his girl again, and see his folks.

He approached Torren, the first person to actually introduce himself since he'd arrived.

"Torren," he greeted as he approached. "I'm Cyl. Well met." He turned his head back to the big house. "And well fought. You've been well trained, clearly."

Father de' Fatale nods affirmatively when Torren suggests checking the water down in the shaft before the Ghouls' escape route is temporarily sealed and says, "Good idea.  Cover me while I do it, you know, just in case."

While other leave to gather materials for the construction job, Raziel pulls a ball of string, piece of wire and an empty flask from his pack and hidden pockets in his clothing and cloak.

After twisting the wire around the neck of the flask with it ending in a loop above the opening, next the holy man ties the string through the wire loop and then lowers the open flask down into the water below to collect a sample as Torren suggested.

Reeling up the partially full container, Raziel untwists the wire from the flask and hands the sample to Torren to hold as he whispers, "Let's see if we can check the depth of the shaft as well."

Adding another piece of wire for extra weight, once again the holy man lowers the string down into the water until it hits bottom, at which point Raziel ties a tiny strip of colored cloth on the string at ground height and quickly reels up the line once the crude measurement is taken and ties a second strip of cloth at the place where the string goes from wet to dry to mark the top of the water level as well.

After analyzing the water sample and getting a rough measurement of the water's depth, the minister corks the flask and seals it with wax in case it has any value in the future.  Next, he retwists the wire, rolls up the ball of string and returns all of his supplies back to whence they came while his colleagues build a cover for the shaft and then reveals the results of his findings.

Finally, Raziel says, "I can cast unlimited small amounts of rain-like precipitation from the Plane of Water.  Perhaps we could use it to wash down items brought out of the house to sit in the sun, and also inside to try and wash away some of the Ghoul filth."

"If anyone has any cleaning magic, such as Prestidigitation or Unseen Servants or Elemental Assistants, that will help too," the padre adds with a sincere smile hoping others had some helpful cantrips as well.

Nonetheless, if folks are agreeable to the concept, the Father de' Fatale will spend the time that others are using to build the shaft cover to cast Create Water cantrips in key locations or as directed to try and wash away some of the Ghoul filth in the manor house and on its contents.
