Chapter 3: Return to Stormshelm

The skeletons shamble up the stairs two by two; magically animated and incapable of tactical thinking, they plod toward the closest perceived target without regard for other potential threats--such as a well-aimed cooking pot thrown by Ohthere from atop the stairs. The nearest skeleton in the front line lurches just a bit, its skull getting knocked sideways, but it keeps coming even with the appearance of a broken neck, its glowing eyes now oriented vertically.

Astrid's sling bullet zips in from the center of the room, but it narrowly zings past the lead skeleton's shoulder and bangs off the far wall with a sharp report. The loud noise perhaps distracts Vayna, whose sword stroke misses just enough that it clips the skeleton's own sword, emitting a dull, brittle CLANG!

Stoyan has Vanya's right flank at the top of the stairs, and as soon as the walking bones are within reach his axe whistles through the air, cleaving bone from bone like dry kindling and sending the bent-necked skeleton crashing to the stairs. Thorkell, on her left flank, likewise snaps through his foe's rib cage with a swift sword stroke, yet somehow the evil-enpowered creature soldiers on.

Atop the pantry, Yorp finds a nest of rats! Beady eyes blink nervously at the kobold, and the whole group skedaddles for the small gap between the pantry and the stone wall.

Thorkell's skeleton swings its rusty sword straight for his head. Lacking a shield, he tries to bring a mailed arm up to deflect the blow. It crunches into his shoulder and sends a jolt of pain through his upper body. [4 DAMAGE]

The second skeleton on the near side steps uncaringly over the bones of its fellow, moving to the front rank to swing at Vanya. However, she maneuvers deftly out of the way, easily avoiding the clumsy stroke.

spacer.pngThorkell grit his teeth and grunted in a muffled manner as the blow made an impact. The pain stung, but there was no better anesthetic than the rush of glorious combat, and the chainmail would anyway protect him from the worst of it. For a moment he thought that the skeleton hit hard for someone with no muscles-and then smiled at that idea. It would make a good jest later on, when it would be time to drink and boast and swap tales by the hearth.

For now, though, he swang again: not thinking much about technique, but simply putting his full weight behind the blow.

Astrid, seeing Thorkell take a meaty blow - and knowing she herself is well-armored, does the sort of thing that she wouldn't typically want to do for her own safety.

Drawing her warhammer, and looking every bit the plated warrior (despite her rather weak frame), she grabs Thorkell by the nape of his chainmail and pulls him out of the line so that she can take his place, raising her shield to await her opportunity to swing.

Ohthere, now fresh out of cooking pots, decides it is time to open a second front. He kneels down on the ledge of the stairs and slides down the wall to a position on the stairs well behind the rear skeleton. Dangling for a moment by one arm before the thought crosses his mind that landing on stairs may not in reality be as easy as the image in his head made it out to be.

Trying to slip down the wall, not jumping, hoping that he can actually support himself until he feels a stair. I am not sure what you want me to do to see if I can pull it off, also not sure if this would still be within the confines of a combat move, which would allow an attack after. I will wait for more instructions before finalizing this post.

     Aurora
spacer.png

Aurora watches her companions engage the skeletons. She'd never seen undead before and the sight of the creeping, mindless skeletons sent a shiver down her back and raised the hairs on her neck. Moving forward, she decides that the best thing to do is to see if there was anything she could do for Thorkell. Knowing she had no medical kits or even extra cloth - "Stupid girl" she mumbles to herself - she hikes up her chain mail top and rips a piece of her tunic and presses it to Thorkell's wound. "We need to keep pressure on it." She says as she brushes some hair out of her face with her free hand before adding that hand to the task. "Auril, watch over us as you watch over all Sky Goddess." She whispers.

OOC: Let me know if I need to roll.

Golan wasn't a coward, far from it, but he was a man of smarts and restraint, one who wasn't real keen to deal directly with death until it came for him personally,To that fact he wasn't going to just let him allies die to the skeletons, but he just had to have confidence they would overcome the foe.

He kept watch up front, and kept glancing back towards the rear, ready for if the battle came to him.

As with any battle plan, this one failed to survive contact with the enemy. The front line becomes a mess of stroke-counterstroke as the fighters duke it out, shielding the rest of the room and preventing the undead from advancing. However, all of their attacks are mistimed, as this is the first pitched combat where the group has had to fight as a unit; accordingly, no hits are scored. Stoyan draws the most contact as his axe skitters off the stone floor, throwing a shower of sparks.

However, all is not wasted, for Ohthere skulks along the back of the stairs and deftly drops himself into a flanking positionApologies for not answering the question earlier, but I decided it made sense to allow the drop to be safely performed without making an attack; the surprise tactic also imposed a one-round attack penalty on the skeleton., dividing the attention of the third skeleton. Further, Astrid is able to drag the wounded Thorkell out of the line and interpose herself, while Aurora takes urgent action to staunch the wounded hero's bleeding.

The skeletons implacably wave their swords in an uncanny mockery of true fighting style. However, their patterns are easily evaded, and now the undead find themselves surrounded by the party. If they were living creatures, they might consider surrendering at this point, but as mindless magical construction they are bound to fight to the end.

Ohthere manages to keep his balance with the drop and then dodges the skeleton's attack. Though completely wasted on the undead the scout's face splits in a gruesome smile. He lunges in with his sword attempting to send the abomination back to its grave.

spacer.pngThorkell's incentive to curse was dual: first, the missed blow, and then, the feeling of being yanked away from the frontline and towards the rear. Before he could fully comprehend what had happened, he was behind Astrid, the attack that had been intended for him now aimed at her instead-though, thankfully, it missed.

"Let me at them!" he cried as he tried to push his way back to where the action was.

(OOC: Given how I wrote his personality, I think he'd still try to engage a skeleton and fight, so he'll try to go around Astrid and attack the skeleton again. If it's impossible to do this, for example due to terrain or movement constraints, just ignore the attack roll and assume that he simply spends a round trying to find a way to the melee but fails.)
