Part I: Punching the Clock

Fourthday, 11th of Neth, 320 AG
Castrovel, Over the Western Sea

Rain pours down on the small freighter, BD514, as it scutters over a dark ocean towards the city of Qabarat, which grows rapidly on the horizon. Though known as the Shining Jewel of the Western Sea amongst the native Lashunta, little of the city sparkles in this weather. Qabarat lines the mouth of the Yaro River, which stretches past the city, into the foothills of the Stormshield Mountains beyond...

The Yaro - or more pointedly the natural bounty it bears - is what brings the crew to Castrovel on such a dreary day. They've been tasked by the Company with picking up a shipment of Yaro berries, a tangy fruit that grows only on the banks of the Yaro River. This seasonal, sizable purple berry is rather commonplace in the markets of Qabarat, but on other worlds it's considered quite the delicacy.

"Job's about as straightforward as they come" Tarika, the crew's company dispatcher, had said in her message a few days ago, the sound of gears being realigned and metal being sodered as she tinkered with something off-screen. "I need y'all to pick up 50 tonnes of these Yaro Berries from a place called Prat's Produce in Qabarat. Once that's sorted out you'll transport 'em to the Hivemarket on Akiton; sweetness like that can go for 10 creds a bowl on the Red Planet folks, so you see why the Company wants in on this."

Sodering gives way to other sounds as Tarika works away in the background of her video message. "Now here's the kicker. You gotta deliver the fruit before it spoils, so that's a window of 6 days to make this run. Shave a day or two off though and EJ'll be more than happy to pay out a bonus, so Jin and Akari'll wanna push that ol'girl of yours a little harder than she's used to if you want some change on this trip."

A soft exhale of satisfaction can be heard as the sound of mechanical work dies down. "All told you couldn't ask for a more routine job. Just try and stay out of trouble while you're working, okay? That goes double for you Dunk. I still haven't forgotten that party after your game in Ning." Tarika smiles warmly and waves. "I'll be in touch when you get to Akiton. Tarika out."

Navigation beacons and the city's traffic control AI direct BD514 to a landing pad at Ship's End, the city's bustling starport.

OOC

Alrighty, happy to be starting this adventure with everyone! This is a solid opportunity for some character introductions and a little RP, so we can take a slow pace if that works with folks.

Given the poor visibility and rough weather, I'm gonna need a DC 15 Piloting Check from Akari (or whoever's shift on the Bridge it is).

Akari Saves

Akari was taking a late shift on the bridge and Peeka was with him as she became very irritable when left in his quarters. By this point the rest of the crew had gotten used to her and her antics. Though a few probably swore when she forgot the more nuanced particulars around property ownership when she uncovered their shinies. He had to apologize on more than one occasion when someone's stuff was found nested with her bedding.

As he was flying through the atmosphere of Castrovel, needing to take the controls on a number of occasions as the weather made using the auto pilot less than ideal. He reflected on his current situation. He had been with the company for a number of years now, though this particular ship and crew was fairly new. Tarika was the one who put in the good word for him to finally get this gig as the actual pilot of the ship, previously he was put into more secondary roles and was never given the responsibility of pilot. It felt good to sit in this seat, right somehow. He came from a long line of pilots in his family and that tradition was important to him. He hoped to one day go back to his home ship and be the pilot there, though for now his tempering was still in effect and only time would tell if he would reach his goals.

He glanced around the bridge and smiles behind his scarf covering his mouth as Peeka scampers around, even taking to the air herself on occasion making little sounds that was somewhere between a hoot and a purr as she enjoyed herself. A sudden crack of lightning against the starboard bow caused a loud noise and a small shudder in the ship which upset Peeka who hopped in Akari's lap causing him to over compensate, momentarily having to fight the controls to stabilize the flight. "Damn it Peeka, are you trying to kill us all. The Captain will roast your ass for dinner if you cause me to get a scratch on her ship." A crackle over the comms had the traffic control AI inquiring if everything was ok, and informing them of their port that they needed to land. "Castrovel Control this is Bravo Delta 514, I read you loud and clear. just dealing with a bit of weather, nothing I can not handle. I copy on the landing at Ship's End. "

As they make their final decent, he allows the starport AI to take control and take the ship in to their docking coordinates. He then takes this time to send out a ship wide call. "I would like to welcome everyone to Castrovel, we are making our final decent to Ships End. Landing protocols are ready to begin."

Raenala was there on the deck. Not exactly paying attention to Akari's work, but she wasn't oblivious. She held, languidly, within her hand her own personal datapad. The doomscrolling had started earlier today. She agonized in silence over the latest analytics of her most recent uploads. Why was it down 2%? What did she do wrong? What was she missing? If she wanted to have any hope of making it out of EJ Corp before the end of her second century, she needed growth— Constant, unending, growth.

She huffed with annoyance. The datapad clattered onto the armrest. She had been sat sidelong in the chair. Body scrunched up, with her legs dangled over the edge of the other armrest at the knees. Her clear, opal-toned, eyes drifted towards the ceiling. The rain against the hull was soothing. Weather wasn't something she experienced much. She had never lived in a place that was 'hospitable'. The climate controlled domes of Apostae, and the unending caverns didn't exactly leave much room for inclimate weather. Absalom Station was no different. Entha was the closest perhaps, but she rarely had the pleasure of stepping onto its surface.

She turned from ceiling towards the open window of the bridge. She was too lost in her own thoughts to attempt to micromanage Akari and his work.

At least it isn't Sovyrian

She mused herself on the thought. On the almost innate distrust she held for her elven kindred of Castrovel. Their masks, their fear— Their accusations. The thought did not have time to linger. Akari was having some disagreement with his pet. She felt the ship lurch, her gaze narrowed towards the two culprits. A sigh left her lips, but no words would join it. She was content to simply allow her gaze of mild disapproval to rest lightly on the back of his head.

As always, Jin is quiet and focused on his work. Work gives him purpose and keeps him from thinking too much. He figures he and Tarika have that in common.

Between engineering tasks, he idly tinkers with Whiskey. He's doing nothing particularly constructive, really - just calibrating, optimizing, and distracting himself.

8syf8g2b.png.edf2e02a628e1f9907968396b5cf1f5a.pngDavir Karst  Cargomaster

A thundering crash of pots, pans, and other unsecured storage comes from the rec room. "-hields! Raise shields!" A particularly fragrant curse follows, then the arrhythmic slap-thud of a mono-booted spacer rushes into the bridge.

Davir's widely unbucked overalls top sits around his waist, revealing a well-worn to some, dilapidated to others off-white sweat-shirt. The black veins around the man's neck seem to almost bulge out, almost as his eyes - bloodshot, popping out, and with an orange light slowly dying into brownness. A terrible sight, were it not for the sleep-sloped hair, the one unclasped boot on the ground, the other foot clad in a patched sock in vibrant pink-and-green lines.

The cargomaster's mouth slowly closes, and his right arm comes down as the scene of the rain and wind outside - as well as the looks of the rest of the crew, now moving away from the culprits towards him - reveals nothing but the rain and the wind.

"Dirtside wind get ye, eh? Wily thing, that, trust it as much as you'd trust a dr-", he suddenly glances at Raenala, before seamlessly correcting himself, "-arf . Places with free air, bound to grav you in with something unseen, is what I'm saying." Staring down at a grayish toe about to poke out from the sock, he leans on a console. "Wheeler's mirror-spit, Haulbay is as empty as a- well, it's empty."

Raenala's gaze, heavy at it had laid, dragged itself sidelong with great effort. Drawn out by the prolonged blink of her eyes. As if the lids themselves carried a weight of worlds. The pearl-luminance of her eyes had come to rest. Her expression deadpan, and attention upon the Diasporan— Davir.

"A Drarf?" She spoke without inflection. Which wasn't abnormal for Raenala. Her humor and genuine thoughts mixed together so freely beneath that expressionless tone. She relished in its ambiguity.

Akari gets a sheepish look on his face when he hears the sigh behind him. He spins his chair and gives her a smile, or at least she assumes as much since she can not see his mouth. "Oh hey Princess, did not realize you were back there." he chuckles after Davir stumbles in especially with his gaff with the captain. "You meant dwarf right?" he gives him a wink.

"Wake me up with lunch and not a near-crash next time, fly-boy. Or a kiss, ya know. Can't get that 'andsome without my beauty sleep." The reply from Davir is sent towards the pilot with a wry grin on his parched lips, only the fainted trails of dark upon them. As he turns to the captain, the only sign of nervousness from the ashen-skinned man is betrayed by the wiggling of a toe poking from his sock as he continues, much in the same tone as her. Keep digging, eh?

"Aye, Drarves, ye know 'em. The little beardy types, always with their clans, you know where their loyalties dock. Trust 'em far as I can throw 'em, and like they got neutron stars in their bellies, dense, man."

Duncan

DuncanHeadshot.png.be46700f7539b79f5a8862e355a5beb8.png

Duncan had spent a lot of time sleeping or exercising. He had let himself go a bit during his time off the Pyramid courts and down in the dumps. He was still a big guy, he just had a little extra to work off. The former athlete was doing such calisthenics down in the hold when the bit of lightning hit but paid it very little mind, figuring it was just them getting ready to land somewhere.

He was eternally grateful for Tarika taking pity on him but he still did not even know why she did. So far he had just done the orientation and knew he was here to lift heavy things and look intimidating. He figured if something was seriously wrong either the ship will shake again or someone will come and let him know.

DARWYN PRIESTLY ("Morgan Hunt") - Outlaw Human Operative 1 DarwynPriestlyv1.jpg.c9b7d66d7d308f78ee62fdb3405cb65b.jpg

HP: 10/10 | SP: 8/8| RP: 5/5 | EAC: 15 | KAC: 16 | FORT: +2 | REF: +6 | WILL: +4 |

INITIATIVE: +5 | LINK: M-W Character Sheet

PRIMARY WEAPON: Azimuth Laser Pistol - 1d4F - 20/24

Lashuntas… Why did it have to be Lashuntas?

Outwardly "Morgan Hunt" quietly goes about doing his job on the small freighter. His inner turmoil, however, reflects the turbulent weather outside without even bothering to look up at the view screens of the Evgeniya-Jaimisson Company Transport BD514. In his guise as a Company electrician, Darwyn just stares at the computer monitors littered here and about on the poorly lit, little bridge, dutifully running various diagnostic programs… while covertly reviewing any pertinent data on their current assignment -- Yaro berries, Qabarat, Prat's Produce, Hive Market, and Akiton.

And – oh, yes -- any relevant news on this frellin’ hellhole of a planet.

Castrovel…

Memories come unbidden to the tall, bearded human. Memories of his poor mother, Krystal Priestly; his mentor and partner, “Snark”; and that Lashunta hazmot, Varikuara the Vindictive, and her shliznat son, Soryn -- but he hides them behind a mask of professional indifference.

Nah-nah… Gotta stop thinking about the past, and concentrate on the present -- like my continued survival.

So, the smuggler-on-the-run looks around him at his crewmates. An interesting lot to be sure. Akari-Monduro-whatevertherestofhisnamewas is an impressive pilot despite the bumpy ride planet-side. Certainly, better than Darwyn, and the operative wasn’t too shabby in his own humble estimation. Yeah, he’s heard a few stories about the Kasuthan’s legendary prowess working for the Company. He’s a nice enough guy, but a bit of a motor-mouth.

Then there’s the captain of this rattrap, Raenala Zeizerer. The drow seems a real people-person. Sometimes a bit uppity, but her social skills were laser sharp. And yet… you know, looking at her at times, somehow she looks familiar, but he can’t quite place her for some reason. Whatever. If she doesn’t bother him too much, he won’t give her reason to be bothered.

Then there’ Davir Karst. Yotz. THE Davir Karst? And this is what he’s become? Biznak…. He used to be somebody in the Void.

Anyway, then there are his bunk-mates, Jin and Duncan. Jin the Brenneri, he’s good. And not just as a ship’s engineer. He’s a good guy. A bit quiet and sad, but he knows his stuff. And that drone of his? Wow. Drad….

And Duncan? Well, that piece of drelk cost Darwyn 1000 credits on that one Pyramid game! Still, the dockworker is a good guy and a good bunk-mate; pretty good in a fight.

Neither Jin nor Duncan is nosy. Both of them keep to themselves, and that’s just the way Darwyn likes it.

Keeping his musings to himself, he continues monitoring the ship's computers.

After they settle into their landing pad he begins his post-flight checklist. "Ships End this is Bravo Delta 514, are we cleared to disembark?" he stands from his seat and stretches all four arms above his head. Letting out a satisfied sigh as his back pops. Making a slight hooting noise he calls Peeka to him and she soars to him landing on a shoulder. "So everyone ready to get into a little mischief? Was beginning to get stir crazy stuck on the ship so long."

Peeka seems unperturbed by Akari's scolding, confident in either her dexterity or cuteness being more than enough to help her evade consequences for her mischief. Taking her perch on the Kasatha's shoulder, the Ilskitt coos in seeming self-satisfaction.

The bumpy descent as a strong headwind picked up at the last minute jostles the crew about and knocks personal items to and fro, but data coming into Jin and 'Morgan's' consoles indicates no damage to BD514 itself. Not an unhappy landing all told.

spacer.png

From their landing pad's elevated position the crew can see the ancient walls of Qabarat - crushed, glittering seashells that rise up to cradle a modern metropolis nestled amongst venerable structures dating back to the beginnings of Lashunta civilization.

Comms soon beep with a message from Ship's End's traffic control AI. "Permission to disembark granted Bravo Delta 514. Welcome to Qabarat - please enjoy your stay."

Based on the directions found within the order invoice, Prat's Produce can be found on Sprik Street, a few miles into the city's commercial center known as the Brightstreets.

Raenala could've grilled Davir more. The Lords know, she wanted to, but the rough landing and chance to finally do something on this job robbed her of any decent comedic timing. She hadn't moved from that languid uncomfortable sideways lay in her chair. With datapad held above her face, she quickly tapped through all the mission details again.

"EJ only cares about the fruit making it to market before it spoils." She shifted in her chair, then finally stood up. The pad was tossed carelessly back onto the seat. A holster and laser pistol had been dangling from the back of the chair. She buckled it around her.

"But I doubt any of us have enough credits to wait around for a few days. Prat's should be a few miles away, so let's get this done quick? Before I have to deal with getting my mind read, preferably."

Raenala took her exit from the bridge, content to wait for the others in the back bays by the cargo rig.
